ALEX FERGUSON has leapt to the defence of Dimitar Berbatov and defended his FA Cup semi-final team selection.

Many fans were angry with the hitman after Manchester United lost 4-2 to Everton on penalties on Sunday.

The Bulgar looked lacklustre and missed in the shootout with a poor spot-kick.

But Ferguson said: “He came on and actually did quite well. He did really well. He is disappointed to miss a penalty of course and he will get criticised.

“When you pay £30million for a player then everyone thinks he should be able to score a penalty.

“But it’s not just about that. Anyone can lose a penalty shootout.

“I have lost plenty and now I have lost another one. Anybody can lose or win them.

“My first major one to win was in the Champions League final in Moscow. It’s not a definition of a team’s record, a player’s record or my record.”

But United chief Ferguson said Berba still felt the hurt of the missed penalty and the semi-final loss.

He said: “Dimitar was upset. All the players were. You lose a semi-final and its hard. It’s not easy to take. But I don’t see any evidence of his season tailing off.”

Berbatov has scored 12 goals in his 33 appearances for the Red Devils but it is his languid style of play compared to the all-action of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez that seems to wind fans up.

The player himself said he felt he had let his team down on Sunday.

He said: “I was looking for the goalkeeper and in the last moment he took the angle I was going for, so he saved it.

“It’s always difficult when you lose, especially when you miss a penalty and you let your team down.

“Of course, this loss is going to hurt us but it’s all behind us and we are going to concentrate on the Champions League and the Premier League. We go on.”

Ferguson said he picked the under-strength team for the semi-final because the Premier League and Champions League are his main priorities.

He added: “I’m absolutely convinced that I picked the right team. And I have no regrets about it at all. I took the realistic view that the priority had to be the league and the Champions League. That’s a plain fact of life.

“What I made sure of was that our supporters were going to see a representation of the future and of the strong squad we have now.

“That’s the issue. We have a strong enough squad to do these things. That’s a credit to the way that we have planned it in recent years.”

Ferguson was still full of praise yesterday for Everton boss David Moyes and Toffees captain Phil Neville, who served him so well at Old Trafford.

Fergie said: “Phil has proved what a fantastic person he is. His penalty-kick was excellent.

“It showed the integrity of the man and what a great person he is.

“He is one of the special people in the game so I hope he is picking up that cup because nobody in the game deserves it more.”

'Kalah buat United lebih gagah'

REAKSI Welbeck (jersi merah) selepas dibentes keras pemain Everton dalam saingan separuh akhir Piala FA di Stadium Wembley, kelmarin yang berkesudahan seri 0-0. Tapi Everton mara selepas menang penentuan penalti 4-2.

Tetapi dia bertegas akan memiliki kembali semua pemain utamanya menentang Portsmouth, esok (awal pagi Khamis) termasuk mangsa kecederaan pergelangan kaki, Wayne Rooney.

– AFP

Fergie: Phil your boots

Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson feels there could be no more fitting a skipper to win the FA Cup than Phil Neville.

The Everton captain openly admitted he could not celebrate in front of the Manchester United fans after he stroked home his effort in the penalty shoot-out that eventually helped seal a May 30 showdown with Chelsea.

Instead, Neville made his way to the Toffees faithful before acknowledging his satisfaction.

And Ferguson, who had the 32-year-old under his control for a decade before letting him leave for Goodison Park in 2005, is desperately hoping Neville now leads the Merseyside club to glory.

"hil is one of the special people in the game so I hope he is picking up that cup," said Ferguson.

"Everyone knows his connection to Manchester United. He was here so long as a kid.

"I know he was captaining Everton in a semi-final but don't tell me there was not one small part in him that was saying, 'Christ I am going to knock Manchester United out of the cup here'.

"It goes to show you the integrity of the man. He is a fantastic person and no-one in the game deserves it more than he does."

Neville knows he owes his opportunity to Ferguson's decision to field a team packed with youngsters on Sunday.

It is a call the Scot insists was right, particularly with a Barclays Premier League encounter with Portsmouth looming on Wednesday.

"I am absolutely convinced I picked the right team," he said. "I have no regrets about it at all.

"I knew there would be some criticism because it did not work for us.

"What I did was make sure our supporters were going to see a representation, not just of the future, but a squad that is strong enough to be able to cope.

"That is the issue. We have a strong enough squad to do these things. That is credit to the way we have planned it over the last two years."

Given United had the better of a contest against one of the best sides outside the top four and would probably have won if referee Mike Riley had spotted Phil Jagielka's foul on Danny Welbeck, Ferguson's bullishness over his stance is understandable.

It is also true to say making mass changes is not a new phenomenon given a number of key men, including Paul Scholes and eventual match-winner Ryan Giggs, were left on the bench for the famous FA Cup semi-final replay win over Arsenal in 1999.

"I dropped five players for that replay," recalled Ferguson.

"There are no replays now like in 1999 and we also have a stronger squad.

"But playing extra-time at Wembley is hard. We experienced it in the Carling Cup final and having had two very close games against Everton already this year, we expected it to be tough again, no matter what team I picked.

"With the programme we have got coming up, I had to take the realistic view. The priority has to be the league and the Champions League. That is a fact of life."
