La Liga Team of the Week(goal.com)
Guti (Real Madrid): The blow-hot-blow-cold midfielder can produce the sublime and the ridiculous in short succession, something that has seen him never quite cement a place in the Madrid starting eleven. However, it was top quality stuff against Villarreal.
Robinho (Real Madrid): What can you say about him but that he has been La Liga's best player this season. Gone are the days when he would give the ball away ten times in every game, or just dribble himself out of possession. Schuster has imposed effectiveness on his talent, and the results are there to see.
Lopez Iraola Pulido Lopo Navarro Pereyra Melo Guti Guardado Edu Robinho
Honourable Mentions:
Sergio Ramos and Gago put in quality displays for Real Madrid, while Bojan Krkic and Andres Iniesta also did well for Barcelona, only to be denied the rewards. |

Goalkeeper
Diego Lopez (Villarreal): It has usually been the Madrid number one making the headlines this season, but for once, he was overshadowed by his former number two. Some quality reflex saves to keep his team in the match until the end.
Defenders
Andoni Iraola (Athletic Bilbao): The versatile young Basque had Thierry Henry in his pocket for much of the game, and also made some telling forays forward to cause Sylvinho plenty of problems.
Ruben Pulido (Almeria): The Madrid born formerGetafe defender was rock solid against David Villa, and ensured Los Che found no joy in front of goal.
Alberto Lopo (Deportivo): Has not done as well aslast season, but then again, defending is a team art. When those around him play their part, he can lead the resistence effectively. Impressed against Valladolid's in form Llorente.
Fernando Navarro (Mallorca): The Barcelona discard was on the money, first against Reyes, and later Luis Garcia. Made some attacking forays too as ten men Atletico were forced into playing narrow to make up the numbers in the middle.
Midfielders
Guillermo Pereyra (Mallorca): The 27-year old Argentine was the star of Mallorca's show as the islanders sent Atletico Madrid home with their tails between their legs. Bossed the midfield from start to finish.
Guti (Real Madrid): The blow-hot-blow-cold midfielder can produce the sublime and the ridiculous in short succession, something that has seen him never quite cement a place inthe Madrid starting eleven. However, it was top quality stuff against Villarreal.
Felipe Melo (Almeria): The 23-year-old Brazilian midfielder has been consistent all season for the La Liga newcomers, and produced some of his best football to make Carlos Marchena look like a novice. A match-winner to show for his efforts.
Forwards
Jose Andres Guardado (Deportivo) The supremely talented Argentine attacking midfielder let glimpse his full potential as he teased and tormented the usually solid Valladolid defence into submission. A welcome win for the embattled Galicians.
Edu (Real Betis): Has had an up and down season just like his team, but worked well to hand top four hopefuls Espanyol a shock defeat. A goal, an assist, and a mobile all-round display makes him the striker of the week.
Robinho (Real Madrid): What can you say about him but that he has been La Liga's best player this season. Gone are the days when he would give the ball away ten times in every game, or just dribble himself out of possession. Schuster has imposed effectiveness on his talent, and the results are there to see. |

Spanish Debate: Robinho Overlooked For Individual Awards?
Few argued with Kaka's selection for the 2007 Ballon d'Or, but there were eyebrows raised as to the final standings. Robinho, for example, was a distant ninth.
His Brazilian compatriot made pretty much a clean sweep of all the major awards, but for the Real Madrid man, there was little individual recognition to be found. A handful of Copa America prizes was about the extent of his success.
Is it fair to say that he perhaps deserved a bit more from last year?
Coming Of Age
While only in the latter half of the year did he truly rise to prominence, Robinho in fact had a fine 2007. We began to see the true extent of his abilities during Real Madrid's ascent to the summit in the latter half of the 06-07 campaign. He started slowly in January, but established himself as an integral part of the side that after drawing 3-3 with Barcelona went on to win nine of their last eleven games. Indeed, Robinho started the final nine of the season, mostly to great effect.
Perhaps above all, Robinho excelled at the Copa America. Brazil were tipped by some to be overrun by a rejuvenated Argentina, but the winger ended upas top scorer, player of the tournament, and perhaps the single greatest factor in the Sele玢o's stunning overall victory. Kaka, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo? They were all sunning themselves on a beach or recuperating from injury, yet Robinho's Brazil prevailed.
Still, the Ballon d'Or passed him by, proving that national team form isn't enough. It may be a prize for the world's greatest footballer, but the European Footballer of the Year award it was born, and in many ways remains. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) It was borne of club football in the Old Continent, and there it stays, with Kaka's triumph coming off the back of a splended Champions League campaign.
Plus,by the time Robinho had truly started to sing, the hype machine was already in overload. Autumn and winter successes - and helping Real Madrid to the summit of La Liga heading into the New Year - seem to count for less than those in spring.
The Opposition
Kaka, then, had it all going for him. The poster-boy at AC Milan, the playmaker's genius undoubtedly contributed to his side's excellent Champions League run and eventual victory.
Lionel Messi often looked like the sole wonder-maker in a Barcelona side said to be full of stars, while Cristiano Ronaldo's effortless genius was what truly made Manchester United tick. The latter player in particular has keptthat run of form going into the New Year, and looks a good bet for repeating his top-three feat yet again.
Yet Robinho, in his own way, has been just as important a player for Madrid for almost a year now, only to receive little recognition on the continent at large.
Perhaps he wasn't the only Madridista to have had a raw deal. Ruud van Nistelrooy rolled back the clock to hit an incredible 33 goals in 46games in all competitions. Such a tally would draw headlines Europe-wide normally, but with so much else going on in Madrid, it almost seemed to take a back seat.
Maybe Fabio Capello's disciplined, sometimes rigid approach to the game, with the emphasis on relentless teamwork and a relative lack of flair, has an effect of rendering individual contributions a mere part of the whole. Thus even the more gifted or on-form players, no matter their performance levels, will always come second best to the team. In that sense, two of the better performers were overlooked.
Third Time Lucky?
Not that many would complain about that. As the star players never tire oftelling us in interviews, individual plaudits are all well and good, but it's titles and trophies that really matter.
But Robinho is somewhat different. This is his third season with Real Madrid and thus arguably his third as a superstar player. And in stark contrast the somewhat more modest (or, to the cynic, dishonest) "cracks" such as Messi, Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, the little Brazilian has repeatedly said that he wants to be the best of the best. Cups and titles are vital, of course, but Robinho wants Robinho to be number one. (And why not?)
Perhaps, then, 2008 could be Robinho's year to be recognised as such by either his peers or the footballing world at large - maybe even both.
But he faces stiff opposition to do so.Maybe not from Kaka, maybe not from Messi, but certainly from Cristiano Ronaldo. A huge tally of goals for Manchester United - and not even from a bona-fide striking position - tells its own story. Plus, it's a European Championship year -a good showing for a Portugal side eager to make amends for 2004, and the judges can hardly say no.
If Cristiano scoops awards, he'll have deserved them. But Robinho may wonder whether or not if circumstances were just that slightest bit different, he'd be the one gripping the trophies that he so desperately wants.
It could be that nothing short of the Champions League could do it for him...

Atletico president Cerezo: We wanted Real Madrid's Guti
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo admits they tried to prise Guti away from Real Madrid before the start of the season.
"Guti is a phenomenal player, but unfortunately was unable to come," said Cerezo. "Atletico were all ready to welcome him ... but it wasn't to be."
