Houllier blasts Boumsong

LONDON (AFP) - The war of words between Gerard Houllier and Jean-Alain Boumsong intensified when the Liverpool boss said it was the Auxerre player, not he, who had gone back on his word over the French international defender's proposed move to Anfield collapsed.
Houllier branded his compatriot "deceitful" after Boumsong, now headed for Scottish champions Rangers, said the Liverpool manager had "led me up the river".
But Houllier told the Liverpool website Wednesday: "What Boumsong has said is both deceitful and incorrect, and Auxerre and their directors know this full well.
"The player gave me his word that he would join Liverpool, and we even shook hands. Everything was clear, including his salary and the length of his contract," Houllier added.
"I then learned that he and his agent had decided to sell him to the highest bidder from among Inter Milan, Juventus and Rangers.
"Signing for Rangers is making a choice based on money, and as far as I was concerned the matter was finished.
"I wish him good luck, but if he really wants me to tell the whole truth about this business it is going to be very bad for him. I have got all the relevant faxes in my possession to show to anybody who wants to know what really went on."
Earlier this week Boumsong, 24, who will join Rangers in a five-year-deal at the end of this season, said: "At the end of last season, an agreement was struck between Liverpool and Auxerre.
"Gerard Houllier explained that this agreement would have to be put before the Liverpool board.
"I waited for confirmation but nothing came. After waiting until November, I realised that Houllier didn't want me any more. He led me up the river: me and Auxerre too."
He added: "I'm a bit disgusted about but I wonder if a man like him deserves to be managing such a big club. The way he treats players tarnishes the prestigious image of the club."
But Boumsong said he was now looking forward to his Ibrox move. "Scotland may not have the biggest championship but Rangers are a great club. People have got to stop thinking that it's some sort of rest home for former stars or players in decline."
