Kusanagi's comeback confirmed
SMAP member Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (34) is set to make his return to show business near the end of this month. Kusanagi was arrested last month for public indecency, after being found naked and drunk in a Tokyo park late at night, but prosecutors chose not to take the matter to court.
Kusanagi's first order of business is a recording on May 28 for the June 1 episode of "SMAP x SMAP." It will be followed by a taping later that night for "Bokura no Ongaku," which will air the next day. On May 29, Kusanagi will make his first actual reappearance on TV, as a guest on the live broadcast of "Waratte Iitomo!"
Fuji TV also revealed that before the incident, Kusanagi had already been tapped to star in the summer drama series "Ninkyo Helper." The show is described as a "nursing comedy," in which Kusanagi plays a gangster who winds up helping tend to the elderly. "Ninkyo Helper" will start in July and air on Thursday nights at 10:00pm.

Kusanagi to make TV comeback May 28 after indecency arrest

Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, who was arrested last month for public indecency, will make his comeback in the entertainment business with the taping of a TV variety program on May 28, the talent agency he belongs to said Thursday. The program, “SMAP x SMAP,” a weekly show on Fuji Television Network, will be aired June 1.
Tokyo prosecutors have decided against indicting Kusanagi, 34, because he had expressed regret and had already suffered social embarrassment. The agency, Johnny & Associates, said his comeback had been decided on following repeated discussions with relevant parties in the advertising, television, cinema, radio, magazine and other businesses, lenient action by the authorities, and the opinions of many fans.
Kusanagi, a member of the pop group SMAP, was arrested naked and drunk in a central Tokyo park in the early hours of April 23.

He will join the other members of SMAP on May 28 to record their weekly variety show "SMAPxSMAP," which will be aired on June 1. On May 29 he will make his first live appearance, in his regular slot on the afternoon show "Waratte Iitomo," and record the narration for the music show "Bokura no Ongaku." Filming of the new "Jinkyo Helper" drama series in which he stars will begin as scheduled in June and the show will aired as planned from July. All the shows are on the same Fuji TV network. Johnny's said that they are cooperating with Fuji and that Kusanagi is likely to give a press conference before his return to work. Although he was let off with a suspended indictment after his April 23 arrest for public indecency, the speed of his return is about money more than an admission of the limited impact of a rare drunken outburst on public morals. If he had received the standard punishment of several months probation, the losses from his TV, radio, movie and commercial contracts would have been in the billions of yen. There was also the outpouring of support from fans, many of whom thought that police had been unnecessarily harsh on someone who, at least when sober, is rather shy and one of the country's most unassuming celebrities.

Highlights: Okada really is an odd boy. But he also seems to be a very deep thinking odd boy. He is really shy and doesn't like being in front of people and would even skip school if he thought the teacher might call on him to answer a question, yet he joined Johnny's. This was an interesting interview, but I feel like I now know less about Okada than before I saw it. He really is an enigma...! But Sakurai's comment was funny! I loved how Okada & Taichi were laughing the whole time about how much Sakurai sounded like a newscaster.

More guests announced for "Mr. Brain"
This Saturday, the drama series "MR.BRAIN," starring SMAP's Takuya Kimura, will premiere on TBS. The cast already includes several other popular stars, such as Haruka Ayase and Hiro Mizushima, but during a recent press event it was announced that each episode will also feature big-name guests.
Last week, it was revealed that KAT-TUN's Kazuya Kamenashi is scheduled to appear in the show's third episode. Now, it is known that the first episode will have appearances by Ebizo Ichikawa, Ryoko Hirosue, and others, while the second episode will bring on musician Gackt.
TBS is hoping to draw very high ratings for the series, which airs in the network's Saturday night time slot.

Tokyo抯 new tour spot -- sightseers flock to site of Kusanagi抯 arrest
Charges have been dropped against pop group SMAP member Tsuyoshi Kusanagi for public indecency and his comeback has been announced for May 28. But the park where Kusanagi was arrested, located behind Tokyo Midtown where he resides, has become a new Tokyo tour spot for curious visitors.
A housewife in her 40s who lives in a condominium facing Hinokimachi Park commented she抯 never seen so many people there before. In the middle of the day, she抯 seen young people take their shirts off and shout, obviously mocking Kusanagi.
Groups of youngsters are also taking videos of their friends reenacting the incident, posing as Kusanagi or policemen in the manner reported earlier by the media.
Shukan Post interviewed one such park visitor who said, 揑 just went to the izakaya (pub) where he was drinking that night and took some pictures. I抦 now on my way to the Akasaka police department [which arrested Kusanagi], then the Harajuku police department [where he was detained], and lastly I抣l take a picture in front of Johnny抯 Jimusho. |
