Our maid, our guard and our car washer
By Zakiah Koya, The Heat Online
A CCTV recording showing a Malaysian luxury SUV owner slapping a Bangladeshi migrant worker for having sat in his car wiping the windscreen from inside at a car wash very much sums up our attitude to migrant workers in Malaysia.
The video was uploaded on Facebook by the car wash owner Atie Abdul Hamid, who stated that the worker had to be treated for bleeding and had a broken nose due to the assault.
The attitude of the vile man who slapped the worker for having “stained” his car by the worker is what many of us have – one that believes the migrant workers should be doing all the dirty work, but don’t let them dirty us or our things.
How many times have we heard of maids getting beaten up, labourers being denied healthcare and migrant workers being treated like slaves by Malaysians?
While there are a number of us who have helped many migrant workers by giving them jobs, but we see them more as workers than as human beings who deserve a little respect.
They come here to earn the pittance we are paying to do dirty, dangerous and demeaning jobs – work which we Malaysians will never do at that amount, never mind if we died starving. They come here, having spent everything they've got to get a permit, believing that this is the land of gold where Malaysians will treat them better than if they went for bigger pay to do the same job in the Middle East.
Yet, they come here and find that there is no gold, neither sympathy nor apathy. Only scarce humanity, when we desperately need them to look after our children when we go to work, or wash our cars or clean our drains and stand on dangerously high scaffolding to build buildings so that we can call ourselves developed.
We will offer them money to get things done for us, but rare it is that we see them as humans, that even on their days off, there are Malaysians who will complain that the migrant workers are crowding the city and that the authorities should not allow it.
We see them every day as they balance themselves on lorries loaded with things, with no safety harness whatsoever and bundled into vans like sheep. Either that, or they are cooped up in our homes.
It is amazing when we see the irony of having migrant guards standing all night and day watching our condominiums and guarding our gated communities from people we suspect are like them. If migrant workers were to stand up for their rights and come at us Malaysians, it would be migrant workers who will be standing them off. But do we realise this? Will we realise this?
Then again, most migrant workers from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and India perform all these tasks dutifully, hiding the dark open secret that out there: in Malaysia, behind the facade of harmony and smiles of unity, we think of migrant workers as nothing more than a machine that can be discarded or abused to get things done.
It is only on that scarce humanity among us that they depend on, in case they get injured or beaten or abused. How many of us will stand up for migrant workers’ rights in Malaysia like car wash owner Atie? |
