Soccer: Nagatomo tells Japan "You'll never walk alone"
MUNICH (Kyodo) -- His country rocked by a devastating earthquake and tsunamis, Japan defender Yuto Nagatomo sent his compatriots a message of support Tuesday night after Inter Milan's 3-2 Champions League win at Bayern Munich.
Nagatomo, who made his CL debut after coming on as a late substitute for the holders, held up a Japanese flag with the words "You'll Never Walk Alone" written on it as he did a lap around the Allianz Arena.
"However far away they (Japanese people) are, our hearts are as one," said Nagatomo. "There were more important things (for Japanese people) than the result of this game. I just wanted to keep going until the end for them."
You'll Never Walk Alone is a song usually associated with Liverpool but it is also played before home matches for his former J-League club FC Tokyo.
Nagatomo entered the fray just before Goran Pandev snatched victory for Inter in the 88th minute, sending them into the last eight on the away goals rule after a 3-3 aggregate draw.
"I think that goal was a message from God," said Nagatomo. "It was a present for the Japanese people." |
