Vidic fit for Barca battle

Nemanja Vidic is expected to provide a welcome boost to Manchester United's defence as they prepare to face Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, first-leg.

The Serbia international sat out a training session at the Nou Camp last night - apparently as a precaution - and is expected to play in the highly-anticipated clash against the struggling Spanish giants.

Vidic only returned to the side from a knee injury in the 1-1 draw against Blackburn at the weekend.

He said after the match the knee felt sore but that he was "ready for the next game".

It is understood England full-back Wes Brown picked up a knock at Ewood Park and he trained away from the main group in Barcelona.

Man Utd on red alert as Lahm抯 Bayern Munich contract talks fail

Manchester United and Chelsea are on red alert after Bayern Munich withdrew their contract offer to fullback Philipp Lahm.

The 24-year-old had been unable to agree an extension to his current deal with the Bundesliga leaders which expires in June 2009.

A statement on Bayern抯 official website read: 揟he talks between Bayern and Philipp Lahm about an early extension to his contract have not led to an agreement.

揟he record champions therefore on Tuesday withdrew their original offer.

Controversiol referee Rob Styles has been dropped to League Two thisweekend after failing to award two penalties in favour of ManchesterUnited against Blackburn.

Styles will run the derby between Shrewsbury and Chester - the first time this season he has refereed outside the top flight.

The Hampshire official ignored United's pleas for spot-kicks in their1-1 draw at Blackburn when Wayne Rooney was brought down by StevenReid, and when Michael Carrick's shot was handled by Brett Emerton.

Last month Styles, 44, stunned Man City fans at Birmingham by awardinga penalty against Sun Jihai when TV replays showed Gary McSheffrey hadinstigated a shoulder to shoulder collision outside the area.

Styles was also forced into an apology to Liverpool in August after wrongly awarding Chelsea a penalty at Anfield.
