Joaquin sparkles in Valencia win
Eurosport - Sat, 28 Aug 17:57:00 2010
Joaquin scored twice and set up a third as Valencia got their campaign off to a winning start in La Liga, overcoming their hosts Malaga 3-1.
Valencia began the match and season with class and composure, as if they did not miss their departing stars David Villa and David Silva.
For ten minutes the hosts were confined to their own half, as Ever Banega, Joaquin and Vicente dominated possession for Valencia.
And when new signing Aritz Aduriz headed in Joaquin's cross Valencia richly deserved their lead.
Valencia might well have made it two had Juan Mata been able to lift Joaquin's tempting through ball over the outstretched arms of Francesc Arnau, but the Malaga goalkeeper made a critical save.
As the half drew to a close the home side grew ever stronger, with Salomon Rondon proving a real nuisance to the Valencia defence.
With a minute to go Malaga won a dangerous-looking free kick on the edge of the area after a handball from Vicente.
Eliseu drilled the set piece low, and Sebastian Fernandez got a faint touch to deflect the ball past Cesar for a goal on his debut.
Malaga maintained their momentum in the early stages of the second half, looking lively and Rondon's header forced a terrific point blank save from Cesar after a sweetly-judged cross from Quincy Owusu-Abeyie.
From the resulting corner Cesar was fortunate as he pushed Eliseu to the ground. His yellow card might easily have come with a penalty had the ball been in play from the corner.
A switch to the left wing for Joaquin paid off when the winger cut inside and fired low at the far post. It caught a deflection from Ivan Gonzalez which wrong-footed Arnau and put the visitors back in front.
And five minutes later Joaquin struck again after substitute Jordi Alba's cross and Aduriz's inviting lay-off.
Those two goals proved decisive, and with the wind taken from Malaga's sails, the visitors ran down the clock comfortably to record their first away win of the season.

Valencia building new era - on the pitch
Tue Sep 21 03:16PM
Valencia play Atletico Madrid on Wednesday in one of the most intriguing ties in La Liga so far.
Los Che are the only club in Spain with a 100 per cent record after three games and they also destroyed Buraspor away in their opening Champions League match last week. Fans won't be getting too carried away as none of the vanquished sides (Malaga, Racing and Hercules) are expected to challenge for silverware this year, but a resurgent Atletico represent a true challenge.
Valencia fans could not have hoped for more after the turmoil which has enveloped the club last year and led to the city council providing an emergency loan to keep them in existence. That they held on to two of their many Davids (Silva and Villa) was a surprise, but they did well enough to finish third and reach the Champions League before their star pair were sold. The money will be used in part to chip away at their huge debts.
Giant cranes dominate Valencia, Spain's third biggest city of 800,000, like unwelcome guests. They mark the skyline above the construction site of the club's new 75,000-seater stadium, but the cranes haven't moved for 18 months.
Instead, they have stand idle, a metaphor for the fortunes of the football club which hopes to move into what will become one of the finest arenas in world football. Construction started in 2006 but stopped at the beginning of last year, when the builders downed tools after payments were not met.
There was a logic to Valencia's move. Spain's third most successful club after Barcelona and Real Madrid wanted to close the gap. They planned to sell their towering Mestalla home, itself one of the most historic and most atmospheric stadiums in sport with its sheer-sided stands.
No longer locked in a prime residential area close to the booming city centre, Valencia would make enough money to clear their debts and move into their smart new arena. The 20,000 extra seats and executive facilities to match the big two would realise extra revenues.
With a waiting list of 20,000 for season tickets their vision made sense at the time. A decade ago, Valencia embarked on a run which would see them reach consecutive Champions League finals and break the Barca-Madrid duopoly by winning La Liga twice in 2002 and 2004. They won the UEFA Cup in 2004 and were Champions League regulars, the 55,000-seat Mestalla usually full to capacity.
Coaches like Hector Cuper and Rafa Benitez were so highly regarded that they were poached by richer clubs, as were exciting players like Gaizka Mendieta and Kily Gonzalez.
Valencia didn't want to lose their best players and their desire to compete financially saw them embark on plans to build a bigger new home. Knowing that the football team was the biggest and potentially the best advert for the city, the local authorities were equally ambitious and gifted the club a plot of land close to the Mediterranean shoreline. Big on prestige, the city had already attracted an annual F1 race and hosted the Americas Cup.
A city which boasts the renowned architect Santiago Calatrava as one of its own was never going to settle for second best in design and fans were excited as their new home began to rise, a series of four concentric rings to be clad in a thrilling exterior. Architects said it would be as revolutionary at the Birds' Nest stadium which hosted the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Nor did Valencia want an out-of-town stadium. The ‘New Mestalla' was to occupy the site of a former factory less than two miles from the city centre.
Construction started in August 2007 and the stadium was due to open in 2009 but there was only one problem - and a rather major one. Spain's property market was the hardest hit sector in the economic crisis and Valencia were unable to sell the Mestalla. Without those funds, they were couldn't pay for their new home.
Construction stopped and boardroom struggles and whiffs of corruption further undermined the club which lurched from crisis to crisis.
Facing meltdown, they were saved by a 90 million euro loan from the city council in the summer of 2009. They fortuitously managed to keep hold of their star players and performed admirably under coach Unai Emery, achieving a distant but credible third place.
Wholesale changes on the playing side in the summer left fans wondering how this season would start. So far it has gone well. Win against Atleti on Wednesday and Manchester United in the Champions League next week and you could make that very well. |

Valencia prepare for United with win
Sat, 25 Sep 18:25:00 2010
Two goals in the opening 10 minutes gave Valencia a 2-0 win over Sporting Gijon in their La Liga clash at Estadio El Molinon.
Unai Emery's side took the lead in just the seventh minute as Mehmet Topal opened the scoring with a header.
Three minutes later, Los Che had doubled their lead as Roberto Soldado picked out the bottom corner of the net to beat Juan Pablo.
Valencia, who have 13 points from five games, were not unduly troubled ahead of Wednesday's mouthwatering Champions League clash with Manchester United at the Mestalla.
The visitors began the day in second place behind Real Madrid on goal difference, and consolidated their position as they remained unbeaten.
Mata and Manuel Fernandes dominated the midfield for Emery's high flyers, and it was not until the second half that Sporting had a meaningful chance on goal when David Barral struck the post.
With three wins and a draw from their opening four games, Los Che will host United in midweek, brimming with confidence.

Valencia beat Bilbao to stay top
Valencia will go into the international break top of La Liga after they beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at the Mestalla.
The league leaders maintained their unbeaten record this season courtesy for Athletic striker Aritz Aduriz's fourth goal of the season. Substitute Vicente sealed the result with a late second, although Igor Gabilondo ensured a frantic final few moments with a free-kick deep in injury time.
Roberto Soldado played a one-two with Pablo Hernandez on the right, and after receiving the winger's smart backheel he fought his way into the area. The striker could have gone down in search of a penalty, but instead he got the byline and chipped a cross in for Aduriz to head home from close range.
The goal was Los Che's fifth header of the season in La Liga, more than any other side.
Athletic struggled to handle Valencia's attacks, with Pablo a thorn in the side of teenage full-back Jon Aurtentxe throughout.
Juan Mata found Aduriz with a cute reverse pass, and the summer signing from Mallorca forced a good save from the foot of goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz.
Mata then found the forward again with a weighted ball over the top of the defence, and Aduriz stabbed a shot wide with the outisde of his boot.
Athletic's tall striker Fernando Llorente endured a frustrating evening, seeing one cross from Igor Martinez go just over his head and sending another wide with a glanced effort.
The introduction of Markel Susaeta at half-time and Gaizka Toquero soon after saw a much-improved performance after the break, and when Iker Muniain replaced the injured Javi Martinez Athletic had three strikers on the pitch.
However, for all their sustained pressure on the Valencia goal as the clock ticked down, they were unable to force Cesar Sanchez into making any significant saves.
Andoni Iraola's good run saw him cut the ball back to Susaeta who hit a solid first-time strike but it cannoned off Llorente, and Toquero fired his follow-up effort high into the stand.
Valencia doubled their lead on the break as Athletic committed more and more men forward. Chori Dominguez found fellow substitute Vicente in acres of space and the veteran midfielder turned past a tackle and fired past Iraizoz to put the result beyond Athletic.
Unperturbed, the Basque side rallied and at least got on the scoresheet with three minutes of injury time played. Manuel Fernandes conceded a free-kick on the edge of the area, which Gabilondo curled into the top corner past the faltering Cesar Sanchez.
Athletic pushed desperately for a late leveller, but Valencia held on to seal the win which sees them travel to champions Barcelona after the international break as the unbeaten league leaders.
