VDS akan catat rekod penampilan semi final CL (13 kali noks)

Edwin van der Sar is set to become a Champions League record-breaker on Tuesday, hoping he gets the chance to crown his magnificent career in perfect fashion at Wembley next month.

The 40-year-old will join former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele by making his 13th semi-final appearance when Manchester United tackle Schalke.

It is a quirk of Van der Sar's career that the first six of them came during his youthful days at Ajax.

He had to wait until his latter years to enjoy such achievements again.

However, having confirmed his retirement plans for the summer, Van der Sar knows May 28 at Wembley could represent the most fitting send-off imaginable.

"It is always nice when you are involved in a winning team," he said.

"We have been good recently, so hopefully we can carry that on.

"I have had a reasonable career so far. Let's hope I can finish it off nicely."

Van der Sar has so far resisted the temptation to reverse his decision despite repeated attempts from inside United's dressing room.

When he is still capable of pulling off the type of fingertip stop that denied Everton's Jack Rodwell at the weekend, it is easy to see why so many observers feel he could carry on.

Yet Van der Sar is wary about losing his powers overnight and has no wish to put his theory to the test.

In any case, for now he has more than enough to concentrate on.

And this evening he was happy to express his admiration for another veteran, and the most obvious threat to United reaching their fifth European Cup final, Raul, a comparative stripling at 33.

"Raul is quite an amazing player," said Van der Sar.

"He had so many years at Real Madrid at a high level and scored so many goals for them in the league. In addition, he is top scorer in the Champions League.

"He is not someone you can lose your eyesight of.

"He is so dangerous and only needs a little chance to score a goal."

Good enough therefore for Van der Sar to issue a warning to Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and company about concentration that is probably not required.

"Our defenders should be on their toes when they play against him," he added.

Report: Schalke 0 United 2

Make no mistake, this was as accomplished a Champions League semi-final performance you could wish to see as United had Schalke chasing shadows in a comprehensive 2-0 victory.

There'sstill a second leg to come before the manager and anybody else will bethinking of planning for Wembley but, in truth, only Manuel Neuer'sbrilliance saved his side from an embarrassing scoreline.
Neuerdefied United virtually single-handedly before two quickfire goals - byRyan Giggs and Wayne Rooney - ensured justice was done. Rooney was theprovider for Giggs' opener and then found the net himself after cunningplay by strike partner Javier Hernandez.
Sir Alex Ferguson optedfor a 4-4-2 formation with in-form Hernandez proving impossible toleave out. Fabio started at right-back with Antonio Valencia, MichaelCarrick, Giggs and Ji-sung Park forming the midfield quartet.

Ina breathless opening period, both sides carved out chances with Edwinvan der Sar worked by Alexander Baumjohann and Edu while Neuer showedhis class at the other end. Rooney drifted inside to force a divingstop out of the Schalke skipper, who then beat out a Park drive. Somefine work by Fabio and Valencia led to Hernandez stretching to testNeuer again. Hernandez was then in a one-on-one with the keeper in the14th minute when Park's astute through ball found him just onside butthe Mexican couldn't squeeze his finish under Germany's number one.

Hernandez remained the man likeliest to open the scoring as herippled the side-netting with a left-footed effort and then made thewrong decision in trying to return a pass to Rooney rather than goingfor goal himself. Chicharito seemed to be finding space easily and, when he was beautifully picked out by Valencia, it was a surprise hissnap-shot flashed across goal rather than on target from an angle.

Giggsalmost broke the deadlock when getting his head to Nemanja Vidic'scross, only for the outstanding Neuer to scoop the ball away with hisright hand.

Christoph Metzelder took a booking for the teamwith a cynical foul on Rooney to stop the England internationalreleasing Hernandez again as the one-way traffic on the Schalke goalcontinued. There was another major scare for the hosts when Hernandeznipped in to again force a fine stop out of Neuer and Park's effort onthe rebound was blocked by Atsuto Uchida.
Moments later, Fabiofired over the top with his left foot from Park's downward header asUnited tried to take a richly-deserved lead. Instead, Neuer blockedcrucially again to thwart Giggs in yet another one-on-one situation bystanding tall to frustrate the Welshman with his seventh save of thehalf as the teams went in all-square at the break.

It took oneminute and 13 seconds of the second half to test Neuer again as Carrickheaded a Giggs free-kick goalwards before Giggs' dreadful right-footed finish ruined the calm dummy that sat two defenders on the deck.

Neuerwas finally beaten with 51 minutes on the clock but, frustratingly,Hernandez was marginally offside when lashing home a superb finish. TheMiners mustered an attempt of their own when Juan Manuel Jurado sliceda volley off target following Jefferson Farfan's lightning run down theright and Edu's powerful shot forced a save out of van der Sar.
Butthe Reds were merely biding their time before conjuring up a way ofbeating Neuer. Patrice Evra fed Rooney and the striker's brilliantdisguised pass allowed Giggs to race through unchallenged to slip homean assured left-footed finish.
Scenting blood, United pouredforward and, after Giggs volleyed a well-placed Valencia cross wide, itwas 2-0 within a couple of minutes. Valencia touched the ball towardsHernandez and the Mexican helped it on intelligently to Rooney, whogleefully swept past the exposed Neuer.

Sir Alex took theopportunity to give Hernandez and Park a breather ahead of the weekendclash with Arsenal as Paul Scholes and Anderson came on with 17 minutesleft.

Schalke tried in vain to reduce the deficit with Farfansending a free-kick wide and substitute Sergio Escudero's excellentattempt forcing van der Sar into evasive action. The hosts, who almostfell further behind late on when Evra shot just wide after linking up withsubstitute Nani, were simply no match for the Reds on the night.Schalke require a Miner miracle in the second leg at Old Trafford next Wednesday.

Sir Alex: We're reaching a peak

United'sultra-professional victory over Schalke has Sir Alex Ferguson brimmingwith confidence as he braces himself for a crucial week in the life ofManchester United.
The return leg of the ChampionsLeague semi-final, at Old Trafford next Wednesday night, is sandwichedbetween two games that will all but decide the destiny of the domesticleague title. The Reds are ready for all of them, insists Sir Alex, ashe reflects on a job well done in Germany.
"The players are relishing these games," said Sir Alex. "I think we're coming to a peak.
"Therewas a fantastic atmosphere (inside Schalke's Veltins-Arena) tonight butit never bowed our players once. They kept on playing their football, showing confidence and trust in one another.
"Our concentration, the intensity of our play and the speed of our passing were all excellent tonight.
"It was a top performance. I'm really pleased with the players, every one of them has done fantastically well tonight."
Ameasure of United's domination is that the best individual display onthe night was arguably that of the Schalke goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer - ayoung man often linked in the press with a move to Old Trafford. He'sreportedly bound for Bayern Munich now - "I think we know that" saidSir Alex - but he'll head there with confirmed admirers in Manchester.
"He was fantastic. It was one of the best performances I've seen against Manchester United," added the boss.
"(Athalf-time) I was cursing myself for mentioning the Dortmund semi-finaland all the one-on-ones we had (in my pre-match interview). But we'vegot more experience now than we had then (in 1997)."
Neuer waseffectively a one-man wall in the first half, thwarting JavierHernandez, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs on numerous occasions tomaintain parity at the end of the one-sided period.
"The funnything was that when Chicharito 'scored' (early in the second half) buthe was offside, it told the players they could beat this goalkeeper! Ofcourse, Ryan scored and then Wazza did. It's a marvellous result."

Giggs: Should have been more

"Ithought if we kept creating chances, one would go in and hopefully Iwould get one on my left foot rather than my right foot!"
      - Ryan Giggs

Goalscorers Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney illustrated the mentality running through the United camp by declaring themselves disappointed with the 2-0 lead from the Champions League semi-final first leg.

An outstanding team performance made a mockery of Schalke's 100 percent home record in the competition as the Reds set things up nicely for the return fixture at Old Trafford next Wednesday.

But, while refusing to rule the German side out, both players insisted there should have been a wider margin of success.

"We created enough chances to be four or five up at half time," said Giggs. "Before the game, we'd have taken 2-0 but we're slightly disappointed it was only two. I thought if we kept creating chances, one would go in and hopefully I would get one on my left foot rather than my right foot!"

Rooney, again outstanding working in tandem with Javier Hernandez, echoed those sentiments. "You never know," he said of the two-legged tie. "We're a bit disappointed we didn't take a few more of our chances.

"We played very well tonight and I thought we created some great chances. Overall, I'm delighted with the performance and we've done really well to get two away goals so it's a good win for us.

"We have to be professional and finish the job off at home. Schalke are a good team and we won't take them lightly. They went to Inter Milan and won 5-2 there so we need to make sure we're professional and fully concentrated and manage to do the job and try to get to that final."

Giggs, again highlighting the sort of the attitude that filters down from themanager, is already thinking about Sunday's trip to Arsenal in thePremier League.

"It's a tough game on Sunday and the manager willobviously rotate and then get us ready for next week against these atOld Trafford," he added.

"So obviously we're pleased but thesubstitutes help as well, the lads who came on did well as well, soit's not about 11 players but about the squad."

Rio: Can't take win for granted

"Insome ways, I was a little bit surprised [by how dominant we were] butthen I look at the players in our changing room and it doesn't surpriseme because we've got quality in there. If we click and play well likewe did in the first half, we can open up any team. "
      - Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand insists United are taking nothing for granted despite a 2-0 triumph against Schalke in the Champions League semi-finals.

The Reds bring the Bundesliga side back to fortress Old Trafford with a commanding lead after a splendid performance that extended the run of away clean sheets throughout this season's competition.

Ferdinand, immaculate as ever at the heart of the defence, is still fearful of the quality possessed by Ralf Rangnick's team.

"We'll wait and see," he told MUTV. "We won't count our eggs too soon. We know that teams can peg you back. There's quality in all sides at this stage of the competition. Players like Raul are quality so you can't take anything for granted."

The shut-out record is not in the centre-back's thoughts as he focuses on completing the job in the second leg.

"It all counts for nothing if you don't get there, or if you get there and you don't win," he explained. "We need to make sure we continue the way we're playing and when we take Schalke back to Old Trafford, we play the same way we did here and then hopefully get through to the final."

After an opening half where only goals were missing from an outstanding team display, Ferdinand admits he feared one lapse in concentration or moment of quality from the hosts could undo all the fine work.

"I thought, first half, we were very good," he said. "We should havecome in at half-time maybe three or four goals up. Their keeper playedwell and made some good saves. We were just a bit disappointed athalf-time.

"Going out for the second half, we said as long askeep a clean sheet we'll get more chances and this time we need to putthem away. We did that. In some ways, I was a little bit surprised [byhow dominant we were] but then I look at the players in our changingroom and it doesn't surprise me because we've got quality in there. Ifwe click and play well like we did in the first half, we can open upany team.

"It was on a bit of a knife-edge for us defensivelybecause we were thinking after creating so many chances that if theygot one and put it away, it would be a big upset."

Player ratings v Schalke
We assess the individual performances in United's win over Schalke...

Edwin van der Sar
Makinga 13th record-equalling Champions League semi-final appearance, theDutchman was a spectator for the most part as United’s attackers ranriot and Edwin’s defenders held firm throughout. Made his best stoplate on from substitute Sergio Escudero.

Fabio
Hugenight for the youngster who got the nod ahead of his brother atright-back and he didn’t disappoint. His enthusiasm got the better ofhim early on with the concession of some cheap free-kicks, but helooked solid defensively thereafter and twice went close to scoring atthe other end. Picked up a yellow card for fouling Jurado.

Rio Ferdinand
Atypically solid, calm display from the England international who wasrarely troubled by Raul and co. Won a couple of towering headers insidehis own box as he was always alert to the danger.

Nemanja Vidic
Anotherexcellent performance from the captain who made some vitalinterceptions early on and never looked troubled when Schalke launcheda rare attack. Outstanding as ever.

Patrice Evra
LikeFabio on the other flank, Patrice got forward well to support in attackand kept Farfan pretty quiet for the most part. Almost scored a raregoal in the closing stages when shooting just wide after linking wellwith Nani.

Antonio Valencia
Always a threat on the rightwing as he ran Sarpei ragged. As well as supplying some typicallyinviting crosses, he played some lovely little passes into the frontmen as United lay siege to the Schalke goal. Involved in the build-upto the second goal and constantly had the home defence worried.

Michael Carrick
Calmand controlled performance from Carrick who was always available tohelp out in defence and get forward to add weight to the attack. Hispassing – long and short – was as assured as ever. Saw a header tippedover by the outstanding Neuer early in the second period. Rarely wasteda ball all night.

Ryan Giggs
Revelled in hisposition alongside Carrick and made the most of the licence he wasgiven to get forward but should have done better when clean throughlate in the first period and then curled an effort wide early in thesecond. Finally, got a chance on his favoured left foot that hedespatched past Neuer as he rolled back the years, showing all hisexperience.
Ji-sung Park

Like all of United’sattackers Ji’s movement, slick passing and work rate caused Schalke’sdefence endless problems. Never stopped running before getting abreather when withdrawn after the second goal. Very important plater, tactically, in big games.

Wayne Rooney
Pickedup where he left off in the last round against Chelsea with anothertop-notch display. Looked lively from the start and popped up all over the pitch, spraying passing around. Linked up brilliantlywith Hernandez throughout and, of course, made one goal with a superbpass and scored the other with a calm finish.

Javier Hernandez
United’sin-form goalscorer could have had a hat-trick in the opening half hourbut for Neuer. And when he did find the net early in the second period, the offside flag was up. Showed there's far more than goals to his gameby teeing up Rooney but will wonder how on earth he didn't get on thescoresheet himself.

Substitutes:

Anderson (for Hernandez, 73)
Brought yet more energy to United's midfield. Showed some nice touches and helped keep things solid.

Scholes (for Park, 73)
Currentlyserving a domestic suspension, he was clearly delighted to be back outon the pitch as he displayed his usual repertoire of long-rangepassing. Dictated the proceedings in acres of space late on as hehelped United keep possession.

Nani (for Rooney, 83)
Lookedfull of confidence as he took on a more attacking role than usual andwas always an outlet for his midfielders. Very hard to knock off theball.
