Benitez struggles to shake off blues

Manager Rafael Benitez was in gloomy mood on Monday as Liverpool aim to contend with disappointment on the field.

Saturday's defeat at Middlesbrough left the Reds seven points behind Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester United, who still have a game in hand. And as he prepares his side for Tuesday's home league meeting with Sunderland, Benitez is acutely aware recriminations are beginning to fly.

Benitez said: "We have talked about the mistakes we made (at Middlesbrough) and the future. And the immediate future is playing Sunderland, trying to get three points and then waiting to see what happens with Manchester United."

He will again be without striker Fernando Torres against the Black Cats, with full-back Alvaro Arbeloa still out with a hamstring injury.

But less than a week after the memorable Champions League victory in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid, you can sense Benitez is having to deal with broken spirits following the shattering defeat on Teesside.

That defeat, the culmination of just one win in seven league games, all but ended Liverpool's chase for the title, regardless of whether they can continue their fine form in Europe.

He added: "The title was difficult before, it is more difficult now. What we have to do is take our chances, and that is something that has been the same problem the whole season.

"Maybe if Torres had not been injured so much things would be different, but we cannot change the situation now. Everybody has players who get injured.

"Since the Champions League win in Madrid we have had some problems, several players have been injured, among other things.

"The worst thing has been the injuries to Torres. He has been our main striker and scored a lot of goals for us last season. And this season could have been totally different with him."

Cisse seeks Prem switch

Djibril Cisse has told Sky Sports News of his desire to remain in England on a permanent basis.
The French striker is currently on a season-long loan at North East outfit Sunderland.
That agreement is set to expire in the summer, with indication as yet whether Cisse will be remaining on Wearside.
The current economic climate has seen the Black Cats err on the side of caution until their Premier League status for next season is secured.
Cisse admits he would be open to penning a full-time deal at the Stadium of Light having enjoyed his time at the club this year, but accepts that he must be patient.
PreferenceThere is no guarantee such a move will materialise, but the colourful 27-year-old has made it clear that his future lies in the Premier League and not back in his homeland with parent club Marseille.
"To be honest I would prefer to stay in the Premier League. If it is going to be Sunderland, I don't know at the moment," Cisse told Sky Sports News.
"We don't know if we are going to stay up, but I think we will.
"But then it is down to the board to make a decision. I am waiting for a transfer or talks.
"No disrespect to Marseille or the public, because I have a good relationship with them and I still have a lot of friends there, but I think my heart is in England and in the Premier League."

LIVERPOOL: Pengurus Liverpool, Rafael Benitez menegaskan bahawa menamatkan musim di tempat kedua masih satu kejayaan di sebalik peluang pasukan untuk memenangi kejuaraan Liga Perdana Inggeris (EPL) yang semakin pudar.

Liverpool menanti kunjungan Sunderland di Anfield, hari ini (awal pagi esok) dengan harapan untuk memenangi kejuaraan liga buat pertama kali sejak 1990 yang kini tampak samar-samar selepas kekalahan 2-0 kepada Middlesbrough, Sabtu lalu.

Selepas menduduki tangga teratas carta menuju 2009, skuad Benitez kini ketinggalan kepada pendahulu dan kelab pilihan, Manchester United dengan tujuh mata selepas memenangi hanya dua daripada tujuh perlawanan terakhir mereka.

Namun, Benitez cuba menampilkan wajah positif berdepan dengan kemerosotan mendadak Liverpool dalam saingan domestik dengan tanggapan menamatkan musim di tempat kedua bukan satu bencana sebaliknya satu petanda mereka sedang menuju ke hadapan di bawah bimbingannya selepas menamatkan musim lalu di tempat keempat.

“Tempat kedua masih lagi satu kejayaan, tetapi kami perlu memikirkan untuk mendapatkan tiga mata menentang Sunderland. Di tempat mana kami akan berakhir bergantung kepada United, Chelsea, Arsenal dan Aston Villa,” kata pengurus Liverpool berbangsa Sepanyol itu.

“Kami perlu meneruskan tugasan kami. Kami baru cuba untuk memperbaiki persembahan. Kami boleh bercakap mengenai kedudukan (dalam liga) tetapi akhirnya, kami perlu memenangi perlawanan yang berikutnya.”

Di sebalik satu kaki sudah pun berada dalam suku akhir Liga Juara-juara Eropah selepas membawa bekalan kelebihan satu gol di Sepanyol menentang Real Madrid, prestasi tidak menentu Liverpool membangkitkan keraguan sama ada mereka mampu menamatkan musim dalam kelompok dua pasukan teratas.

Perlawanan hari ini adalah permainan liga terakhirnya sebelum menanti kunjungan Real dalam pertarungan kedua Liga Juara di Anfield, 10 Mac ini. Saingan liga mereka selepas Sunderland ialah menentang Manchester United di tempat lawan pada 14 Mac ini. - AFP
