Kotaro Koizumi gets first drama series lead

Actor Kotaro Koizumi (30) finally has his chance to truly prove himself as a lead actor, taking on his first starring role in a drama series. He plays a salaryman in TV Asahi's "Call Center no Koibito," written by Miho Nakazono ("Haken no Hinkaku").

The drama focuses on a young man named Wataru Tokura (Koizumi), proud of his job as a salaryman in a big city. However, he suddenly gets transferred to a rural call center, where he is forced to deal with customer complaints. Mimura plays a contract employee with impeccable customer service skills, while Yuko Natori plays a charismatic television shopping show host.

Koizumi has been the lead in drama specials before, but never in a series.

"Call Center no Koibito" will premiere this July, occupying TV Asahi's Friday 9:00pm time slot.

Charts: Arashi all the way

Arashi's newest single, "Ashita no Kioku / Crazy Moon," easily topped the charts this past week, selling more than 502,000 copies. This marks their 15th consecutive number-one single and 22nd overall. It is also their second single in a row to sell over 500,000 in the first week, a feat that has not been achieved since Keisuke Kuwata in 2001.

GReeeeN's "Haruka" picked up the #2 spot at 63,000 in sales, and Ringo Shiina's newest landed at #3. Ikimono Gakari (#7), SPEED (#8), and Yui Aragaki (#10) also had new releases in the top ten.

Meanwhile, news was also made with the latest posthumous release from ZARD, "Sunao ni Ienakute." Ranked 5th on the charts, it became ZARD's 43rd top-ten single, tying her for the current record with Southern All Stars, SMAP, and Ayumi Hamasaki. Originally released as a B-side on her second single back in 1991, "Sunao ni Ienakute" has been recorded as a new version with singer Mai Kuraki featured in the song's chorus.

On the album charts, the #1 spot was taken by "Trash We'd Love" from The HIATUS, a new band formed by ELLEGARDEN's Takeshi Hosomi. It sold 80,000 copies, beating out Ken Hirai's new album, "Ken's Bar II." Other artists in the top ten were May J. (#4), Yoko Kanno & The Seatbelts (#6), Yuna Ito (#7), and MEG (#10).

Yuma Nakayama, B.I.Shadow debut for "Koishite Akuma"

Early last month, it was announced that Kansai Johnny's Jr. member Yuma Nakayama (15) is starring in a new drama series on Fuji TV. Details about the story have now been revealed.

The drama is titled "Koishite Akuma ~ Vampire Boy." Nakayama stars as a young vampire named Ruka who has entered the human world. Although he hates humans, he begins attending high school and falls for his homeroom teacher, played by Rosa Kato (23). Masahiko Kondo (44) has been cast as another vampire, who serves as Ruka's "chaperone." Another Kansai Johnny's Jr. member, Shintaro Morimoto (11), will also appear in the series.

Nakayama will also be singing the theme song as part of a new Johnny's group, called "Yuma Nakayama with B.I.Shadow." The five members have an average age of 14.4 years old, surpassing Hey! Say! JUMP as the youngest Johnny's group at the time of their major label debut.

B.I.Shadow is a Johnny's Jr. unit that formed last year. Their members are Kento Nakajima (15), Fuma Kikuchi (14), Hokuto Matsumura (13), and Yugo Kochi (15). Together with Nakayama, they will release the single "Akuma na Koi" on July 15.

The "Koishite Akuma" drama series will air on Tuesdays at 10:00pm, beginning on July 7.

GLAY heats up Yokohama to the delight of 15,000 fans

YOKOHAMA — Legendary Japanese rock band GLAY, who just celebrated their 15th anniversary, rocked the city of Yokohama at their first concert in over five years, held at Nishi Ward’s Nippon Maru Memorial Park on Sunday.

The show was the first free concert to be held in the metropolitan area, and was announced at around 8 a.m. on the band’s website. Despite the 27 degree temperatures, 15,000 fans gathered to see the show. Lead vocalist Teru, 37, shouted out his appreciation, “It’s a little hot, but let’s have a rocking good time!!” The band belted out a total of five songs, including the new “I am xxx,” to be released Wednesday 10 on GLAY’s best-of album, “The Great Vacation Vol 1.”

The band is scheduled to play for around 15,000 fans on August 15 and 16 at Yokohama’s Nissin Stadium. Teru tempted the crowd, saying, “It’s thanks to all of you that we’ve been able to come this far in the past 15 years. Thank you! The show at Nissin is going to be even better than today!!”

Charts: GIRL NEXT DOOR, GReeeeN
Wed, June 17, 2009 (3:05am EDT)

The music charts this week were taken over by two groups rising in popularity. Avex's GIRL NEXT DOOR landed at #1 with their 5th single, "Infinity," while GReeeeN captured the album charts with their 3rd release, "Shio, Kosho."

"Infinity" sold close to 31,000 copies, enough to beat out Mai Kuraki's "Beautiful." For GIRL NEXT DOOR, "Infinity" was their fifth consecutive Top 3 single, a streak stretching back to their debut. That has not been achieved by a mixed male/female group since globe did it in 1996. Kuraki, on the other hand, now has 32 consecutive Top 10 singles since her debut, extending the record she already holds as a female solo artist.

The bottom half of the top ten singles were all new releases, coming from Gackt, "Hayate no Gotoku!," TUBE, Plastic Tree, and Kazuki Kato.

In album sales, "Shio, Kosho" sold over 452,000 copies, which marks the best opening week performance of 2009 so far. That amount was more than the rest of the top ten combined, which included new releases from GLAY, VAMPS, RIP SLYME, Quruli, BRAHMAN, and Masashi Sada. This is GReeeeN's second consecutive #1 album, and they currently also hold the #4 spot on the singles chart.

EXILE tops sales ranking for first half '09
Thu, June 18, 2009 (2:45am EDT)

Popular group EXILE has officially been declared the top seller for the first half of 2009. According to Oricon figures, the group sold an estimated 5.48 billion yen worth of CDs and DVDs in the period between December 15 and June 7.

This achievement is nothing new for EXILE - they also achieved the highest sales in the first half of 2008.

In individual album sales, Mr.Children's "SUPERMARKET FANTASY" ranked #1, as it was the only one to break a million. This is the group's third time leading first-half album sales, tying them with Yosui Inoue for the male artist record.

In individual singles, Arashi managed to capture both #1 and #2, which was last achieved by Hikaru Genji in 1988. "Believe / Kumori Nochi, Kaisei" led the way with 646,000 sold, followed by "Ashita no Kioku / Crazy Moon" with 556,000 sold.

Arashi also had the #1 DVD of 2009's first half, as "ARASHI AROUND ASIA 2008 in Tokyo" moved 355,000 copies. This is the first time that a music DVD has topped the rankings.

The latest release from J-pop group Greeeen has become their second consecutive million-selling album. Universal Music announced at the weekend that "Shio, Kosho" broke the one-million barrier just ten days after it went on sale earlier this month. That's a full week faster than it took DCT's "Do You Dreams Come True?" the year's only other album to reach that level in sales. Greeeen owe some of their success to the theme songs they provided for the popular TBS drama series "Rookies" ("Kiseki," included only on the first edition of the album) and its hit spinoff movie "Rookies - Sotsugyo" ("Haruka"). The group have applied to Guinness World Records to have "Kiseki" recognized as the world's best-selling digital download. To date, the single has been downloaded 5.9 million times.
