KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic is at a snarl in the city after part of a road at the intersection of Jalan Pudu and Jalan Hang Tuah where an underground tunnel was being constructed collapsed, Wednesday morning.
Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail said the tunnel, which is part of Pudu underpass project by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), sunk twice at approximately 10.38am and 12.20pm, Wednesday.
“We predict that the road will collapse further along the tunnel line.
The collapse has damaged Syabas water pipes.
It is learnt that two idle excavators were in the tunnel when the incident occurred but no casualties have been reported,” he said.
Thirty personnel from the fire department as well as two teams comprising of 20 DBKL rescue personnel, police, and Prasarana officers are on site to assist with the situation.
Monorail service between Imbi and Hang Tuah stations has been temporary halted.
Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd Monorail chief operating officer Abdul Hadi Amran said that monorail has extended a shuttle services between KL Sentral and Hang Tuah, Imbi to Titiwangsa as well as KL Sentral to Titiwangsa.
According to DBKL’s Integrated Transport Information System (ITIS) twitter account traffic from Jalan Hang Tuah to Jalan Imbi has been diverted to Jalan Pudu while traffic from Puduraya has been diverted to Jalan Imbi.

A Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department spokesman at the scene of the incident said a 19-metre stretch of the route along Jalan Imbi sank in the incident at 10.30am.
Fortunately, he said, no loss of life was reported.
"A preliminary report found it could have been caused by a burst Syabas main pipe but investigation is still going on," he said.
In a follow up to the incident, the KL Monorail Service from Hang Tuah Station was stopped due to the underground soil collapse near the monorail pillar at the intersection.
