Primera Liga Team Of The Week (Rd. 2) (GOAL.com)
The second week of Primera Liga action saw Samuel Eto'o and Ruud van Nistelrooy put their names down as firm contenders for this season's 'Pichichi' award. Elsewhere Zaragoza, Real Betis and Sevilla also put in commanding displays.
1. Kameni (Espanyol): Used his size and speed to pull a few saves out of thin air. But for the talented Cameroon international, it could well have been a tennis score-line for Zaragoza, such was the poor state of the Espanyol defense.
2. Thuram (Barcelona): A cool, calm, almost perfect display in the heart of the Barcelona defense meant that perhaps for the first time in years, the Catalans actually looked secure even without skipper Puyol. One wonders how long before the duo start together!
3. Sergio Fernandez (Zaragoza): Put in a big display to pull his side out of trouble, after they were reduced to ten men with an hour left to play. Gave absolutely nothing away, be it Tamudo, Luis Garcia or Pandiani who came looking.
4. Ayala (Valencia): The Argentine was in his elements after having solved his contract dispute; tight marking, crucial challenges, goal-line clearances, he produced it all to keep a clean sheet for Los Ches.
5. Cuartero (Zaragoza): Another huge display from another Zaragoza defender, particularly after he doubled up to handle both the attacking and defensive duties along his flank, Also provided a superb assist for Pablo Aimar to open the scoring.
6. Oubiña (Celta Vigo): The Spanish international has picked up where he left off last season, and demonstrated once again that he is well on the way towards becoming one of the best defensive midfielders in Spain, if not Europe.
7. Deco (Barcelona): Ran the show, literally, until Rijkaard decided to rest him on the hour mark for the midweek Champions League clash.
8. Aguero (Atletico Madrid): The only bright spot in an otherwise pathetic display from Javier Aguirre抯 men. The Argentine international was dynamite ever since he came on for the lost Mista at the start of the second half. Too bad the rest of the team decided to doze off!
9. Edu (Real Betis): Put in a superb all-round display as Betis thrashed a sorry Athletic Bilbao 3-0, the highlights being his assist for Capi, and of course, the goal of the season so far, following the most sublime of runs with the ball.
10. Van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid): He might have missed a penalty, but when you speak about efficiency in front of goal, there are few names that come before his, and his hat-trick argues exactly why. He will have a lot to say before this season抯 慞ichichi |
