Life of boxer Daisuke Naito to be dramatized
Tue, July 8, 2008 (2:11am EDT)

Current WBC flyweight champion Daisuke Naito will have his autobiography turned into a television drama. TBS plans to air the show, titled "Naito Daisuke Monogatari: Ijimerareko no Champion Belt," on July 28. Actor Atsushi Ito will star as Naito.

The drama depicts Naito's life, from being a bullied child in school and being a shut-in after graduation, to deciding to become a pro boxer and working towards his current level of success.

For the role, Ito trained at Naito's gym starting last month. However, Naito made sure not to be at the gym during Ito's practices, and the two finally faced each other in the ring for a practice match. Naturally, Naito won the fight, but the boxer said he was surprised, even saying that Ito is in better shape than himself.

HYD cast to fly around country in private jet
Fri, July 4, 2008 (9:10am EDT)

Last weekend, the highly anticipated "Hana Yori Dango Final" opened on 400 screens. In its first five days, it was watched by approximately 1.35 million people, grossing more than 1.6 billion yen. This puts it roughly on par with last year's "HERO," which went on to take in a total of 8 billion yen.

As a way of showing appreciation for the fans, starring actress Mao Inoue and F4 (Jun Matsumoto, Shun Oguri, Shota Matsuda, Tsuyoshi Abe) will be flying to various cities in a private jet next weekend. The plane is a Boeing 737-500 (which can normally seat about 130 passengers). They will visit Sapporo, Nagoya, and Fukuoka on July 12, then Osaka and Tokyo on July 13. The total trip amounts to 4,660 kilometers.

Chartering a jet for a publicity campaign is said to have never been done before for a Japanese film.

Tegoshi revisits "Shabake" role
Wed, July 16, 2008 (1:11am EDT)

Fuji TV has announced that Yuya Tegoshi will be returning for a follow-up to last year's "Shabake" drama special, which marked his first lead role on television. Like the previous episode, "Uso Uso" is based on part of Megumi Hatakenaka's supernatural jidaigeki novel series "Shabake."

The "Shabake" drama was fairly successful with 14.4% ratings when it aired last November. A sequel was soon decided, and filming for "Uso Uso" began at the start of this month. Shosuke Tanihara and Hiroyuki Miyasako have also been confirmed as returning cast members.

Fuji TV plans to broadcast the special this winter.

Drama Grand Prix: "CHANGE" and "Last Friends" win for Fuji TV
Thu, July 17, 2008 (1:42am EDT)

Nikkan Sports has completed its Nikkan Sports Drama Grand Prix for the spring season, which counts as the first quarter of the 2008 awards. A total of 8,350 votes were gathered during the first ten days of July.

Fuji TV's Monday night series "CHANGE" took two awards. It edged out "Last Friends" by 129 votes to be named Best Drama, and Takuya Kimura overwhelmed "ROOKIES" star Ryuta Sato by a margin of almost 2,200 votes in the race for Best Actor.

Yuki Amami was voted Best Actress for her role in "Around 40." The next closest choices were Aoi Miyazaki and Yukie Nakama.

"Last Friends" picked up the remaining two categories, Best Supporting Actor and Actress. Ryo Nishikido only collected 1,100 votes, but it was enough to defeat Hiroshi Abe and the rest. Juri Ueno, considered only a supporting cast member to Masami Nagasawa, pulled in more than 2,500 votes, with Eri Fukatsu slightly less than 400 votes away.

news article: DORAMA REVIEW

Just when you think there's no hope, TV offers up intrigue and talent
Wm. Penn / Daily Yomiuri Columnist

Four cheers for the talented actresses of Yottsu no Uso (Thursdays, 9 p.m., TV Asahi). It's the suspenseful tale of four lies, four women around 40 who went to high school together but really don't know each other at all, and a Foreign Ministry official with secrets of his own.

Studious Neri (Reiko Takashima) is now a rather lonely surgeon. Bored Makiko (Shinobu Terajima), stuck in an unsatisfying arranged marriage, was the class representative and still feels in charge of the group. Makiko's daughter attends her old alma mater as does the daughter of Shifumi (Hiromi Nagasaku), who spent most of her youth reading novels before she married Kono (Toru Nakamura), the Foreign Ministry employee. Unsuited to the diplomatic life, she divorced him and is raising their daughter alone.

The fourth woman is Minami (Michiko Hada), who lives with her husband and daughter in Vancouver. She loved Kono in high school, but this did not stop Shifumi from stealing him away back then.

Reminiscent of the first episode of Desperate Housewives, we see Minami only for a few seconds before she dies and becomes the posthumous narrator of the story. In those few moments, she is on a romantic cruise ship near Vancouver with Kono discussing a bandage on his finger. And then suddenly, there is a collision at sea and we are shown the covered bodies of the victims. Kono's bandaged finger, but not his face, is visible.

Back in Japan, Makiko catches the first news report and is immediately intrigued. By Episode 2, she heads off to Vancouver to investigate. Shifumi hears the news while in bed with her current lover, a young boxer. Emotionless, her first reaction is to go immediately to her mother-in-law (Yoko Nogiwa) and demand enough child support to cover her daughter's education.

We learn a lot about the women in Episode 1, but obviously, there are still secrets to uncover. The series got off to a good start. Let's hope it can hold its own in the same time slot with Wataru Seken wa Oni Bakari (TBS), a series that has gone quite stale and really should have called it quits last year.

The Foreign Ministry also had a starring role in the four-star Kaseifu wa Mita finale, a TV Asahi drama with a 25 year history whose consistently clever Eizaburo Shiba scripts and characters will be sorely missed.

While dusting and scrubbing in the home of a three-generation family of career diplomats, Akiko (Etsuko Ichihara) befriends the daughter and discovers her paternal grandfather is haunted by his involvement in a secret overseas aid agreement that helped keep the dictator of a resource-rich African country in power for 25 years. Meanwhile, her maternal grandfather was the prosecutor who used false evidence to silence and discredit the reporter who broke that story. Then, he used that case's notoriety to establish his own successful political career.

Now 25 years later, Akiko watches as it is all resolved without anyone actually being held accountable. Those in power prevail and poor Akiko, with no husband, children or savings, heads off for another day of scrubbing and cleaning at someone else's home. Wow! Talk about reality TV!

If there is an heir to Shiba's intelligent, socially conscious style of scriptwriting, it just might be Yasushi Fukuda, who, in recent years, has given us Kyumei Byoto 24-ji, Galileo, and now the political drama Change. The showpiece of the July 14, five-star finale was an inspiring 20-minute speech by Prime Minister Asakura (Takuya Kimura) that emphasized accountability and responsibility for politicians and voters alike. It was so good, the public would probably elect Asakura tomorrow if given the chance.

It might have been fiction, but the final episode was very gratifying TV. I'm already hoping for Change II. Starting July 21, Yuji Oda's Taiyo to Umi no Kyo#su takes over Fuji's Monday 9 p.m. slot but Change will be a tough act to follow.

Andonatsu (Mondays, 8 p.m., TBS), the story of a young woman determined to become a wagashi (Japanese sweets) artisan, is a two-star, soothing #amachi tale and a painless way to pass an hour.

Lotto 6 de 320 Million Yen Ateta Otoko (Fridays, 9 p.m. TV Asahi) was not painless. I had high hopes for this one but lottery winner Tachibana (Takashi Sorimachi) and friends were hard to watch.

Sad to see Sorimachi without a good script to spotlight his talents yet again. One lucky ticket, no lucky stars.

And so ended the second week of July 2008, a week when the retirement of Cui-daore Taro, Osaka's mechanical mascot with the arching eyebrows and the striped clown suit, seemed to get almost as much coverage as the Group of Eight summit.

The summit came and went but by week's end, the networks were still avidly following Cui-daore Taro on a tour of Beppu's hot springs.

Looks like the guy's got a great post-retirement career ahead of him in TV or politics.

Singer debuts with "Koizora" theme
Sat, July 19, 2008 (12:59pm EDT)

23-year-old singer-songwriter Mai Fukui has been given a big opportunity. She will be making her major label debut with the theme song to TBS's highly anticipated "Koizora" drama series, which begins next month. The song is a ballad titled "Ai no Uta," set to go on sale on August 20.

Fukui sent out her first demo tape just last October, catching the attention of Avex and her current management agency. She moved to Tokyo in February, and three months later TBS offered her the chance to sing for "Koizora."

The drama version of "Koizora" has a different cast from last year's hit movie, with Erena Mizusawa and Koji Seto replacing Yui Aragaki and Haruma Miura. The show premieres on August 2.

Fuji TV's new Monday night drama series "Taiyou to Umi no Kyou$hitsu," starring Yuji Oda, premiered this week. "Cafe Kichijoji de" to be adapted as daytime drama
Sat, July 19, 2008 (12:37pm EDT)

The comedy story "Cafe Kichijoji de" is being adapted to television this fall. The show will be TV Tokyo's first daytime drama series, and it will put talento Emiri Nakayama in her first starring role.

"Cafe Kichijoji de," written by Yuki Miyamoto, originated in 1999 as a drama CD and a radio drama. After that, it was turned into a manga series, illustrated by Kyoko Negishi.

The story revolves around a colorful group of five good-looking men who work at a cafe. Their daily misadventures continually cause problems for their unfortunate manager. That character was a male in the original story, but has now been made into a female for the drama, played by Nakayama.

TV Tokyo will broadcast the series on weekdays at 11:50am, starting on September 29.
