Ten years ago today, a very young Brazilian player arrived in Madrid after leaving Inter Milan. His name was Roberto Carlos. A decade has now gone by, and the Brazilian defender has become a symbol of Real Madrid and one of the players to play the most games with the team. Roberto Carlos signed for Real Madrid on August 31 1996, during Fabio Capello's last season as Madrid coach. The Italian manager placed a strong bet on the Brazilian winger, whom he had seen playing in the Italian League. Capello even said he was the "second best left winger in the world," surpassed only by Milan's Paolo Maldini, while in Spain no one knew who Roberto Carlos was. With his speed and his powerful shots, the Brazilian soon won the Bernab閡 crowd over.
