Roberto Carlos, a decade in White
"Playing for Real Madrid is the most beautiful thing that's ever happened to me"
Ten years ago today, a very young Brazilian player arrived in Madrid after leaving Inter Milan. His name was Roberto Carlos. A decade has now gone by, and the Brazilian defender has become a symbol of Real Madrid and one of the players to play the most games with the team. He is also one of the foreign players to play the most games in the Spanish League.
Roberto Carlos signed for Real Madrid on August 31 1996, during Fabio Capello's last season as Madrid coach. The Italian manager placed a strong bet on the Brazilian winger, whom he had seen playing in the Italian League. Capello even said he was the "second best left winger in the world," surpassed only by Milan's Paolo Maldini, while in Spain no one knew who Roberto Carlos was. With his speed and his powerful shots, the Brazilian soon won the Bernab閡 crowd over. Roberto Carlos is also a very extrovert character, and soon became one of the Whites' most charismatic characters.
Roberto has lived moments of great success with the White shirt these past ten years, and has managed to fully experience each and every one of those moments because injuries have been kind with him and every coach has counted on him as the team's starter left winger. When having to choose one of those moments, Roberto Carlos never hesitates. "Winning Real Madrid's seventh European Cup was incredible, since we hadn't won it for many years and no one thought we could beat Juventus in the final. The fans were immensely thrilled."
Despite his great experience, the Brazilian defender is very excited with this season. 揅apello made me a winner and now he's back. I want to win new titles for Real Madrid; that's what I always hope for. I want to keep fighting to make this the best Club in the world.".
Roberto Carlos is a League institution, being the fourth foreign player to have played the most Spanish League matches, and the first of all those active today.. Within his Club, he's the ninth player to play the most games in Real Madrid history, playing more matches than legendary footballers Di St閒ano and Puskas.
Roberto has one of the best football track records in the world, having won many titles, including a World Cup won in Japan and Corea, three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and a Silver Football. |
