Barca to go looney over Rooney

Manchester United are bracing themselves for a massive bid from Barcelona for star striker Wayne Rooney.

British tabloid News of the World reported that Barca want to make Rooney the most expensive player in the world with a proposed ?95 million offer for the Red Devils.

The English champions only avoided making a loss last season thanks to the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Barca's bitter rivals Real Madrid last summer. The Catalan giants are hoping their mega offer could tempt United who are in financial trouble and would consider selling their star players.

Reports have suggested that Barcelona are on a look-out for a versatile striker and having seen Rooney up-close in the Champions League final last season, the Englishman fits the bill perfectly.

But it remains to be seen if United will sell the player who is a firm fan-favourite.

United had earlier announced that they will be opening talks with Rooney in February to extend his contract. The former Everton striker has a contract at Old Trafford until the end of season 2011/2012 and there were suggestions that the Premier League champions would be unable to match the terms Rooney will demand.

United manager Ferguson has since dismissed the reports as "total rubbish" and he said:

"I don't know his contract situation at all, I've no idea, no one ever said to me that Wayne's contract is up at such a time, it was never mentioned so I assume everything's OK."

- AFP

Tevez haunts United in Carling Cup derby

Carlos Tevez hit a brace against his former club as Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-1 in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final.

Tevez, who moved to the blue half of Manchester after Sir Alex Ferguson decided against making his loan move to United permanent in the summer, scored in both halves as City came from 1-0 down at Eastlands to gain a narrow advantage ahead of next week's second leg at Old Trafford.

After a bright start, it was United who took the lead on 17 minutes when Antonio Valencia showed good skill to get to the byline and his cross picked out Wayne Rooney.

His effort was well saved by Shay Given but the ball broke kindly to Ryan Giggs, who tapped home from virtually underneath the crossbar.

But City were soon back on the attack with Tevez unable to keep an effort on target, while Nigel de Jong forced a save from Edwin van der Sar.

The equaliser arrived three minutes before half-time when Rafael Da Silva was adjudged to have pulled back Craig Bellamy in the area, although the initial offence clearly took place outside the box.

Tevez stepped up, and despite the best delaying tactics of van der Sar and a cheeky word in his ear from Rooney, the Argentinian smashed his penalty high into the roof of the net.

City came out for the second half with all guns blazing but it was United who almost scored again when Given was alert to keep out a Rooney effort.

But City took the lead in the 65th minute when Vincent Kompany hooked a cross into the six-yard box and Tevez popped up to head home from close range.

The goal was clearly a sweet moment for Tevez who cupped his ears in a gesture clearly directed at all associated with his former club.

Van der Sar then had to be alert to push away a Shaun Wright-Phillips drive, but it was all United after that with Nedum Onuoha clearing off the line from substitute Michael Owen and Given tipping over a clever effort from Rooney.

Valencia then missed a golden opportunity to equalise when he misjudged Patrice Evra's cross, while Given saved well to deny Rooney again.

But the equaliser did not emerge and it is City who go to Old Trafford next week hoping to protect their narrow lead and reach their first major cup final since 1981.
