Sat, May 24, 2008 (2:42am EDT)
Some of the winners of the 45th Galaxy Awards were announced on Friday. Sponsored by the non-profit Japan Council for Better Radio and Television, the awards honor contributions in radio and television between April of last year and March of this year.
Actress Aoi Miyazaki was given the Individual Award for television, based on her starring role in the NHK taiga drama "Atsuhime." This is the first time a taiga drama lead has won that prize since it was established during the 21st Galaxy Awards.
A special 45th anniversary award was given to 75-year-old talento/writer/composer Rokusuke Ei. Last year's drama series "Utahime" won the My Best TV Award, which is determined by public vote.

SHORT DORAMA
Tackey & Tsubasa do short drama as bonus on next single
Sun, May 25, 2008 (9:49pm EDT)
Popular duo Tackey & Tsubasa are appearing together in a short drama tied in with their soon-to-be-released single "Koiuta" (on sale June 4). Many artists have previously made music videos that have elements of a television drama, but this will be the first time an actual drama is included with a song's release.
The 20-minute episode will use the love ballad "Koiuta" as its motif. Hideaki Takizawa takes on the role of an angel watching over a blind woman (played by Rinako Matsuoka), while Tsubasa Imai plays the woman's childhood friend. The drama will be included as a bonus with the first press edition of the single.
The last time the pair were in a drama together was in NHK's 2005 taiga drama "Yo#sune," which Takizawa starred in. Imai made a guest appearance on the show as a minor character.

UPCOMING SUMMER DORAMA
Nagasaku plays wicked woman for new drama series
Wed, May 28, 2008 (2:21am EDT)
Actress Hiromi Nagasaku is taking on the starring role of a TV Asahi drama series titled "Yottsu no Uso," not to be confused with a similarly titled series ("Yu Aoi x Yottsu no Uso: Camouflage") that aired on WOWOW earlier this year.
The drama follows four women in the "around 40" generation, which has been recently gaining attention and is currently the central topic of a TBS drama series. Nagasaku plays Shifumi, an attractive woman who stole her classmate's boyfriend in high school, and despite criticism from others, she got married and had a child. However, she soon divorced and currently keeps a younger boyfriend.
The other main characters are three of Shifumi's former classmates: an ordinary housewife (Shinobu Terajima), a work-focused doctor (Reiko Takashima), and the housewife Minami (Michiko Hada). Minami is having an affair with Shifumi's ex-husband (the boyfriend Shifumi originally stole from her), but after she and the man die in a ferry accident, the various secrets and lies kept by the four women all come to light.
Shizuka Oishi is doing the screenwriting. Shooting will start early next month, as the show premieres in July. TV Asahi will air the drama at 9:00pm on Thursdays.

Kyoko Fukada teaches social dance in NTV drama
Tue, June 3, 2008 (1:13am EDT)
Kyoko Fukada has been given another starring role in a drama series. Like last season's "Mirai Koushi Meguru," she will play an English teacher, but this time the setting will be an esteemed private all-girls high school. No title has been announced yet for the series.
The drama will use an original script written by Kazuhiko Yukawa, whose credits include other school dramas such as "GTO," "Majo no Jouken," and "Joou no Kyou$hitsu." Fukada plays Mai Aida, a woman in her third year as a teacher. Due to declining enrollment, the school decides to admit its first male students.
Those five freshmen initially feel they're in paradise, but the concerned Mai tries to help them adjust by creating a social dance club and inviting five girls. Those ten students become the focus of the drama, which is described as a story of love and adolescence.
Shosuke Tanihara co-stars as the school's principal. NTV will start broadcasting the series on July 15 in its Tuesday 10:00pm time slot.
