West Ham 2 United 4
Wayne Rooney struck a stunning second-half hat-trick as United roared back from 2-0 down to claim a pulsating Barclays Premier League win at Upton Park.
Mark Noble converted a pair of first-half penalties for West Ham to seemingly deal the Reds’ title hopes an untimely setback. United had bossed the match despite Noble’s double, however, and deservedly overturned the scoreline in the second period.
Rooney curled home a magnificent long-range free-kick, thundered in a superb leveller and converted a penalty in a breathless 15-minute spell, before substitute Javier Hernandez turned home a late clincher to cap another rousing fightback from the Reds.
Watching from the stands in the second instalment of his touchline ban, Sir Alex Ferguson will again wonder how his side insist on putting all their followers through the wringer, before switching his attention to Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Stamford Bridge.
With the visit to Chelsea looming, Nani, Dimitar Berbatov and Chicharito all started on the bench, while Edwin van der Sar was a precautionary absentee with a minor groin injury. Sir Alex's defensive selection was preordained, with Wes Brown, John O’Shea and Rafael all injured and Jonny Evans starting his three match ban. Fabio and Patrice Evra started at full-back, flanking a central-defensive partnership of Chris Smalling and Nemanja Vidic.
As United bossed the early exchanges, Smalling's first tellingcontribution of the game was a thumping header which Rob Greencomfortably tipped over the bar. After another corner, however, theReds fell behind. Thomas Hitzelsperger's gargantuan pass releasedCarlton Cole and, as the striker flicked the ball over Evra, thedefender's raised hand blocked the ball’s path. Few protests metreferee Lee Mason’s award of a penalty, which Noble duly dispatchedpast Kuszczak.
Despite the shock of falling behind against therun of play, United’s response was bright, with Antonio Valenciaparticularly prominent in some menacing forward probes. TheEcuadorian’s crosses prompted a succession of scrambled clearances fromthe hosts, as did a Wayne Rooney centre which narrowly eluded Ji-sungPark’s attempted diving header.
The Reds’ steady attempts to finda route back into the game were handed another blow after 23 minutes asCole won his second penalty, advancing into the area and tumbling overthe outstretched leg of Vidic. Unquestionably a foul, but outside thearea according to the Serbian, inside it in the view of the strikerand, most importantly, referee Mason. Noble steered home anotherunerring finish.
The flow of the game continued in the same vein, with United comfortably bossing possession. The Reds’ first realopening fell to Ji-sung Park, whose stinging half-volley was somehowturned over the bar by Green. From the subsequent corner Smalling rosehighest again, but steered his header wide.
On the break, Hitzelsperger thrashed a half-volley wide with thehosts’ first notable attempt in open play. The German then came withina yard of West Ham’s third goal with a superb curling free-kick,awarded after Vidic had missed a header and subsequently hauled downDemba Ba. Much to the hosts’ ire, the Serbian was merely booked, whilethe home support demanded a dismissal.
The interval came and wentwith the deficit poised at two goals, and Sir Alex endeavoured toprompt a revival by introducing Chicharito at the expense of Evra, andmoving Giggs to left-back. Little more than 30 seconds of the secondperiod had passed when the makeshift full-back crossed for thesubstitute, who stabbed an effort over the bar in a promising start.
ThoughWest Ham defended stoutly, with Manuel da Costa particularlyoutstanding in the centre, it seemed a matter of time before United’sgrowing pressure yielded a breakthrough. When it arrived, in keepingwith the game’s previous goals, it came from a set-piece. With 25minutes remaining, Noble brought down Carrick outside the West Hamarea. Rooney stepped up before steering a wonderful free-kick round thewall and inside Green’s left-hand post. United’s dander was up: game on.
Withinseconds of the restart, Gibson’s long-range effort was deflected wide, while Carrick’s hooked effort from the subsequent corner onlyfractionally cleared Green’s crossbar. The England goalkeeper then hadto be alert to turn away a near-post poke from substitute Dimitar Berbatov, who had replaced Park.
As West Ham’s defencecreaked, Rooney again struck. A patient passing move culminated inValencia flashing a left-footed pass inside for Rooney, and thestriker’s superb first touch took him away from a cluster of bodies andcreated the room for a devastating low finish past Green. United’stravelling contingent went wild, and time remained for another notch ofdelirium.
Berbatov drew a fine save from Green with a stingingeffort from just inside the area as the white-shirted visitors pouredforward. Fabio’s marauding run down the right flank culminated in across which struck Matthew Upson’s arm, prompting the award of thegame’s third penalty, which Rooney duly slotted home to complete hisown treble and United’s comeback. Still, the Reds pressed for more andlooked to exploit gaps in the increasingly ragged home defence. Withsix minutes remaining, Chicharito notched his now customary goal bysliding in from close range after Giggs’ cross had deflected throughthe legs of two defenders.
“We shall not be moved,” roared thejubilant away support, who had witnessed yet another instance of thesheer bloody-mindedness that has so often separated United from all therest. |

Boss: We played like champions
United's rousing come-from-behind win at Upton Park bore the hallmark of champions, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.
Wayne Rooney's 15-minute hat-trick and a late clincher from Chicharito overturned Mark Noble's first-half pair of penalties, and the United boss was delighted with the methodical way in which his side chipped away at the scoreline and took the points.
"I think we played like champions today," Sir Alex told Sky Sports. "We kept our heads up, we didn't lose faith in our ability and it was a great boost to us in that respect. It's not an easy place to come to, and they're fighting relegation, but we dominated that second half and it was a real championship performance as far as I'm concerned.
"Arsenal have got the games in hand, of course. It could go to goal difference, but somehow I don't think so. We have to win our games, but that was a great boost to us to get that result. We've four home games, three away and the important thing for the players is that they go and play."
The Reds' gradual suffocation of the hosts owed much to the half-time introduction of Chicharito and the form of Antonio Valencia, with the former playing a perfect foil to Wayne Rooney and the latter terrorising Hammers full-back Wayne Bridge.
"Valencia had them on toast really," said the Boss. "He's so confident on the ball and they couldn't get the ball off him, so we were always going to get in that position where Valencia had possession on the edge of the box. In the first half he delivered two or three fantastic balls in, but we just didn't get enough on the end of them to capitalise.
"In the second half, when Chicharito came on, he gives you that lightning pace and he's threatening all the time behind them, so it meant they were going right back towards their box and that left us a lot of space to operate.
"I have to say, being two goals behind at half-time was a travesty in terms of our possession of the ball and the chances we created. They probably only had two shots at goal. But when you're two goals down at half-time, you're under the kosh in that respect, and we had to go for it. Going for it is important for us." |

Vital hat-trick thrills Rooney
Roon 101
Wayne Rooney celebrates his101st league goal for United - a penalty that completed his fifth Redshat-trick and gave his team the lead at Upton Park.
"I was delighted to score the one that put us in front was great because I knew then we'd go on and win the game."
Wayne Rooney believes practice paid off as he completed the fifth hat-trick of his United career from the penalty spot.
Although his second goal was also his 100th in the Premier League for the Reds, the number ten took the greatest satisfaction from his spot-kick, awarded when, at 2-2, West Ham captain Matthew Upson was deemed by referee Lee Mason to have handled Fabio's cutback.
"I thought the first one was important but I was delighted to score the goal that put us in front was great because I knew then we'd go on and win the game," said Wayne.
"I'd been working all week with Greeny [West Ham and England goalkeeper Robert Green] on penalties so I was a bit unsure what to do. But I stuck to what I'd been doing all week and maybe Greeny thought I was going to change it because thankfully I sent him the wrong way and got the goal."
It was Rooney's three goals in 14 minutes that brought the Reds roaring back from 0-2 down to 3-2, but he was keen as always to share the credit with his team-mates and, indeed, his manager Sir Alex Ferguson following two key changes of personnel in the second half. Firstly, Javier Hernandez came on at the restart for PatriceEvra; later Dimitar Berbatov replaced Ji-sung Park who had made hisfirst start since 26 December.
"I think the substitutions weregood ones and they won the game for us. Chicharito is a massive threatand then Berbatov came on - although he didn't get a goal, he wasfantastic for us. He held the ball up brilliant and allowed the runnersto run off him."
Like his colleague Ryan Giggs, Rooney denied he was worried by the half-time scoreline of 2-0 to West Ham.
"UptonPark is a difficult place to come but we took encouragement from thefirst half when we got ourselves into good areas. We didn't take ourchances then. But we knew if we got the next goal we were capable ofgetting more and thankfully that was the case." |

League: Rivals held
Results, 2 April 2011
Arsenal 0-0 Blackburn
Birmingham 2-1 Bolton
Everton 2-2 Aston Villa
Newcastle 4-1 Wolves
Stoke 1-1 Chelsea
WBA 2-1 Liverpool
West Ham 2-4 Man United
Wigan 0-0 Tottenham
United's thrilling 4-2 victory at West Ham in Saturday's early kick-off was later embellished when both Arsenal and Chelsea dropped two precious points in the title race.
The second-placed Gunners still have a game in hand on the Reds but they are now seven points adrift after a dismal 0-0 home draw with ten-man Blackburn Rovers. The visitors from Lancashire held firm at the Emirates despite having French midfielder Steven Nzonzi sent off in the 75th minute.
Earlier, Chelsea's grip on the Barclays Premier League trophy slipped significantly when the reigning champions were held 1-1 at Stoke City. Carlo Ancelotti's side fell behind to an early opener from Jonathan Walters, but managed to level before the break through Didier Drogba's header. Both sides struck the woodwork twice in a barnstorming second half, but a draw ultimately leaves the Blues 11 points behind United, albeit with a game in hand.
Tottenham also lost ground in their battle for fourth spot with Manchester City, as they could only muster a goalless draw at Wigan and stay three points behind the Citizens, who host Sunderland on Sunday. The rest of Saturday afternoon's action affected an absorbing relegation battle. Everton and Aston Villa fought out a 2-2 draw, Newcastle thumped Wolves at St James' Park and Birmingham notched a priceless home win over Bolton.
West Brom also snatched a vital result, coming from behind to beat Liverpool at the Hawthorns through a pair of Chris Brunt penalties, giving Roy Hodgson a huge victory against his former side.

Giggs: We never give up
Ryan Giggs is urging his team-mates to keep going for seven more leaguegames as his 12th - and United's 19th - league title drawstantalisingly closer with each weekend that passes.
Theveteran winger aided the Reds' latest comeback victory, 4-2 at WestHam, from the unusual position of left-back. But it was otherwise afamiliar story at Upton Park where Sir Alex Ferguson's league leadersrallied from 0-2 down to take three points home from East London.
"We don't give up. No matter what the score in the game, we keep going," said a proud Giggs in his post-match interview.
Onlookersmay have feared the worst for United's players at the break with WestHam 2-0 up and Sir Alex coming down from his seat in the stands - thisbeing the second match in his five-game touchline ban. But half-timewasn't 'hairdryer' time, according to Giggs.
"No, he was calm," insisted Ryan. "We'd played some good stuff in the first half. We just gave silly goals away.
"Wewere getting into good areas but the final ball wasn't good enough. Wejust needed to concentrate more in the final third. We felt if we keptcreating chances and got a goal back we could go on and win it."
Andso it proved, with Wayne Rooney scoring a hat-trick - including his100th Premier League goal for United - and Giggs racing forward fromleft-back to supply the killer ball for Javier Hernandez to net the fourth and final strike of a stunning second-half recovery.
"Ithought today we were brilliant all over the park," said Giggs. "Buteven when we've not been playing well we've been grinding out results.Hopefully now with seven games to go we can keep doing that." |

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp: Wayne Rooney is a 'silly boy' for swearing into a camera
Spurs manager not sure why young players are so 'angry' following the Manchester United forward's x-rated tirade at a TV camera during comeback win at West Ham
By Alex Richards
Find the best odds and bet on the Premier League.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has slammed Wayne Rooney for his foul-mouthed rant that has landed the England striker with an FA charge.
The FA announced on Friday that Rooney had been charged with 'use of offensive, insulting and/or abusive language' after swearing into a television camera following his third goal against West Ham.
But Redknapp has condemned the actions of the 25-year-old, saying that he deserved to be charged.
"I haven't heard what he said as I was driving back from Wigan but I've read what's been reported in the papers," Redknapp said at his press conference ahead of Spurs' Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
"I don't know why he did that. I don't remember Bobby Charlton doing that when he used to smack goals into the top corner from 35 yards.
"Why do these young players have to be so angry with the world? I don't know why. They are getting hundreds of thousands of pounds a week.
"I respect him as a player but he is a silly boy for what he did and he shouldn't have done it." |
