Takenouchi, Kanno to co-star in TBS's "Tomorrow"
Sun, May 18, 2008 (5:13pm EDT)
TBS has announced a medical drama for this summer titled "Tomorrow," starring Yutaka Takenouchi and Miho Kanno. The show has apparently been in planning for the past four years. During that span of time, producers visited hospitals across the country gathering doctors' opinions about the problems faced by the hospital system and its patients.
Takenouchi plays a surgeon who retired 8 years ago to work for the municipal government. However, he ends up returning to the profession to help a local hospital on the verge of bankruptcy. Kanno plays a co-worker, taking on the role of a nurse for the first time in her acting career. Tamaki Ogawa, Tomoka Kurokawa, Takanori Jinnai, and Ittoku Kishibe have also been confirmed for the cast.
Filming starts later this month. "Tomorrow" will air on Sundays at 9:00pm, starting on July 6.

"Koizora" moves to the small screen
Wed, May 21, 2008 (12:24am EDT)
TBS has announced that it is producing a television drama based on"Koizora," the mobile phone novel that became a hit movie last year. The film starred Yui Aragaki and Haruma Miura, and both saw their popularity rise after the movie took in 3.9 billion yen from more than3.1 million admissions.
The drama will feature an entirely new cast, with auditions being held for both Aragaki's and Miura's roles. Producers are said to be seeking unknown actors, particularly a girl who can be cultivated into becoming "the next Gakky (a nickname for Aragaki)." The cast is expected to be finalized by mid-June so that filming can begin for a summer broadcast. TBS will be airing the drama in its recently revamped Saturday 8:00pm time slot, which currently is the home of the baseball drama "ROOKIES."
Although the cast will be new, the production team is being carried over from the film, giving them another shot at the story. The team includes Natsuki Imai as director, Mutsuki Watanabe as screenwriter, and Shin Kono doing music.

Miss Universe Japan runner-up plays Akiko Wada in drama special
Tue, May 13, 2008 (1:02am EDT)
Akiko Wada's singing career turns 40 this year, and to commemorate the occasion, Fuji TV has announced a drama special titled "Wada Akiko Monogatari" that will illustrate her life. The role of Wada is being played by 26-year-old Akiko Chubachi, who was the second runner-up in the 2007 Miss Universe Japan competition.
The drama is adapted from Wada's 1993 autobiography "5-nenme no High Heels." The script is being handled by Masaki Fukasawa, who has had writing credits on popular dramas such as "Aibou" and "Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo." It will cover Wada's life from her youth up until her winning of the Japan Record Award with the 1972 single "Ano Kane wo Narasu no wa Anata."
Chubachi was chosen for the role partly because of her height, as she is just as tall as Wada at 173cm. Sankei Sports has a picture of her here, along with an imitation of the original "Ano Kane wo Narasu no wa Anata" cover.
Filming is scheduled to begin soon and is projected to finish in time for broadcast sometime next month. Other cast members include Pinko Izumi and Masachika Ichimura.
Earlier this month, it was announced that Wada will perform her first overseas concert at the Apollo Theater in New York this September.

"Code Blue" confirmed: Yamapi, Gakky, Toda
Fri, May 23, 2008 (12:00am EDT)
Rumors of a Fuji TV drama series titled "Code Blue" were confirmed on Thursday. The show has assembled a cast packed with young stars and established veterans, led by NEWS member Tomohisa Yama$hita.
The drama's full title is "Code Blue: Doctor Heli Kinkyu Kyumei." The concept is based on Japan's proposal for an emergency medical service using helicopters to quickly reach those in need. A special bill was passed in June 2007 that should foster widespread adoption of the system.
Yama$hita stars as a young doctor-in-training, working under the guidance of an experienced "flight doctor" (Toshiro Yanagiba). Some scenes will be filmed with a real helicopter, adding to the show's tension.
The supporting cast includes Yui Aragaki, Erika Toda, Manami Higa, Yosuke Asari, Kiyoshi Kodama, Ryo, Tetta Sugimoto, Susumu Terajima, and Masanobu Katsumura.
Fuji TV will broadcast "Code Blue" on Thursday nights at 10:00pm, starting sometime in July.
