Wesley Sneijder looks likely to miss out on Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final return leg at Barcelona after scans showed the Inter ace suffered a hamstring strain at the weekend.

“Sneijder underwent a series of medical tests following the injury he sustained at the end of the first half of Inter-Atalanta,” reads a statement on the club’s website.

“Test results have revealed he strained the rectus femoris muscle in his left leg.”

The playmaker will presumably be given until the last minute to prove his fitness but there are now fears he will be forced to throw in the towel.

It is a big blow for Inter boss Jose Mourinho who will also be without the suspended Dejan Stankovic.

But striker Goran Pandev is expected to recover in time from a thigh injury to travel to Barcelona, where Inter will look to protect a 3-1 lead from the first leg to make the final of the competition for the first time in 38 years.

Gerard Pique's late strike proved insufficient for Barcelona as a Jose Mourinho-inspired Inter Milan held out for more than an hour with 10 men to seal their passage to a European Cup final for the first time since 1972.

Mourinho's side, protecting a 3-1 lead from the first leg, were reduced to 10 men following Thiago Motta's 28th-minute dismissal, but the Italians defended heroically - and at times cynically - to deny Pep Guardiola's men.

And for Mourinho, who celebrated triumphantly on the pitch at the final whistle, it was vindication following a turbulent spell in Italy and his controversial departure from Chelsea, where he was unable to deliver a repeat of his remarkable Champions League success with Porto.
