Singapore to announce M-346 trainer selection

Singapore is about to announce that it has shortlisted the Alenia Aermacchi M-346 for its advanced jet trainer requirement, after eliminating the Korea Aerospace Industries/Lockheed Martin T-50 from the competition.
"The South Koreans have been informed that the T-50 is no longer in contention, even though Singapore has not yet signed a contract with Aermacchi," says an industry source familiar with the discussions.
"We expect a formal announcement in a few weeks."
If confirmed, the decision would represent the second major setback for the T-50, which also previously lost out in a battle to meet a 48-aircraft requirement with the United Arab Emirates.
However, the UAE has yet to sign a deal with Alenia Aermacchi following its selection of the M-346 in late 2008, and the T-50 is understood to be back in contention.
Singapore, which is seeking a replacement for its Douglas TA-4 Skyhawk trainers, narrowed its AJT contest to the two types in 2008, when it rejected a BAE Systems proposal using the Hawk 128.
Alenia Aermacchi is already under contract to produce an initial batch of T-346As for the Italian air force, with the first two due for delivery in December. The company is also offering the twin-engined design to meet the future requirements of the US Air Force, as the T-100 Integrated Training System.

MRAP unwrapped
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) took the wraps off its MaxxPro MRAP vehicles today.
Three armoured Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, painted in desert camouflage, formed part of the National Day Parade Mobile Column that took part in the fifth Combined Rehearsal (CR5).
You can see them as part of "Wave Nine", which is at the tail end of the 2-km long column formed by 210 vehicles from the SAF and Home Team.
Known in Singapore Army service as MPTVs, these armoured 4x4s are understood to be destined for overseas service.
The MaxxPros were armed with a remote weapon station mounted with a 12.7mm CIS 50 heavy machine gun and possibly another sensor/weapon to the right of the HMG.
Senang Diri understands that the SAF's search for an MRAP-type vehicle pitted the MaxxPro against the Marauder MRAP, designed by a group of South African defence engineers. |

We have always been in Afghanistan. Our current overseas area of active operations are Iraq(concluded), Afghanistan and the Gulf of Aden(US-led naval Task-force 151 was under Singaporean naval command. Currently, we have an Endurance class LPD deployed there). We have sent engineering, medical, KC-135 tankers, radar systems(arthur radar systems) and peacekeeping troops to Afghanistan. We will be sending more troops plus UAVs next. |

Overhead weapon is remote operated. Sg is one of few countries in the world going maximum effort to protect soldiers. |

Nice. We have several RG31 MRAP's currently operational in Lebanon.. Our medical team will be deploying to Afghanistan and if I'm not mistaken, will be stationed with the New Zealand contingent. Good to know that another South East Asian country troops is already there. |

Well done Singapore. According to IMF, Singapore is already a developed 1st world country. Attracting such investments is amazing. This just go to show that your labour costs can be very very low but multi-national companies still favour expertise and highly educated and intelligent workforce.

Singapore aquires another submarine

Minsiter for Education and Second Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen, officiated the launch of the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) Archer-class submarine RSS Swordsman at the Kockums Shipyard in Karlskrona, Sweden today.
His wife, Mrs Ivy Ng launched the submarine, which is the second Archer-class submarine that the Republic has acquired from the Royal Swedish Navy (RSwN).
During the launch he pointed out that the acquisition of the submarine was essential to the RSN's continual development of its submarine capabilities.
He said: "The RSN's submarines are part of an integrated war-fighting system which includes our stealth frigates, naval helicopters, missile corvettes and mine-countermeasure vessels.
"Together with the Challenger-class submarines, RSS Archer and RSS Swordsman will enable the RSN to better fulfill its mission of protecting Singapore's sea lines of communication and territorial integrity."
The launch of the RSS Swordsman reflects the strong alliance between the two nations, which goes back to the 1970s.
Singapore's defence relationship with Sweden encompasses wide-ranging interactions and collaborative projects such as the assistance provided by the RSwN to build the RSN's mine-countermeasure force and submarine capability.
Dr Ng had also met with Mr Jan BjÖrklund, Swedish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education, and signed an agreement to encourage further education collaborations between Sweden and Singapore. |
