While the BMW X6 was being officially unveiled in production spec at the Detroit motorshow yesterday (Sunday 13 Jan), our spies found one prowling the streets a lot closer to home.
The "world's first sports activity vehicle" was parked casually in London's Old Bond Street. Being a Sunday morning the road was deserted, and the occasional passer-by never thought to look twice.
Still sporting the sticky marks of a recent disguise, and with all external badges either covered over or removed, it was clear that BMW still wanted to hide the identity of the car. Maybe they should have covered over the BMW logos inside too.
But why leave it out in the public? Did a development driver fancy nipping out to the shops in it? Unlikely given they were all shut. Had they parked it up and retired to a safe distance to gauge how many heads it turned in some kind of marketing exercise? But why not choose a busier street?
Judge for yourself but we reckon the car looks terrific. The proportions are spot on, although bigger wheels would help fill the arches. It looks like a strict two seater in the back, but despite the sloping roof line rear headroom didn't seem too compromised.
The X5 has always been the most car-like SUV to drive, but the X6 is supposed to be sports-car like. We've spoken to someone who's already driven the car on a track - they reckoned the X6 hid its weight well and could be steered accurately apex to apex defying its high stance. Prices will start at

The BMW X6 xDrive35i is pricedat RM698,000 on the road without insurance, with BMW Service Inclusive+ Repair. The xDrive35i model is powered by the N54 3.0 liter twinturbocharged inline-6 engine that produces 306 horsepower thanks to its twin parallel turbochargers and direct injection.The other two X6 models available worldwide is the xDrive50i poweredby the 4.8 liter twin turbo V8, and the xDrive35d powered by thesequential twin turbocharged 3.0 liter diesel enginefrom the 335d.
