The last two memorable 'dectective' stories yang saya baca ia lah translations ....
1) Smilla's sense of snow oleh peter hoeg ( adanish write)
2) the name of the rose -umberto eco (italian)
here's a short synopsis dari amazon.com
Smilla's sense of snow
In this international bestseller, Peter H鴈g successfully combines the pleasures of literary fiction with those of the thriller. Smilla Jaspersen, half Danish, half Greenlander, attempts to understand the death of a small boy who falls from the roof of her apartment building. Her childhood in Greenland gives her an appreciation for the complex structures of snow, and when she notices that the boy's footprints show he ran to his death, she decides to find out who was chasing him. As she attempts to solve the mystery, she uncovers a series of conspiracies and cover-ups and quickly realizes that she can trust nobody. Her investigation takes her from the streets of Copenhagen to an icebound island off the coast of Greenland. What she finds there has implications far beyond the death of a single child. The unusual setting, gripping plot, and compelling central character add up to one of the most fascinating and literate thrillers of recent years.--
The name of the rose -ini review dari
http://www.mysteryguide.com/bkEcoRose.html
The Name of the Rose is a most unusual publishing success, a first novel by an Italian semiotician that became a worldwide bestseller. Ironically, the theme of the story seems to be that the hunger for knowledge and truth is dangerous, divisive, and ultimately illusory. The horrible events that take place in an isolated Benedictine monastery over the course of seven days serve as a microcosm of the conflicts rocking the late medieval world.
It is the year 1327 when William of Baskerville and his young scribe Adso of Melk (who narrates the story many years later) arrive at the unnamed northern Italian monastery, which contains the greatest library in Christendom. The abbot and his henchmen carefully control access to the collection; only the librarian and his assistant are allowed into the labyrinthine stacks. The ostensible reason is that there are thousands of books by pagan, Jewish, and Arab authors, as well as the records of many heresies. While true Christians must understand error in order to combat it, only the strongest and most mature minds should be exposed to it. Naturally the scribes and scholars, who have come from all across Europe to use the library, long to view its hidden treasures. Strange intrigues develop among the monks, and suddenly turn to murder. A gifted young illuminator is killed; the next morning a second monk is found dead, plunged head-first into a barrel of pigs' blood.
William is an English Franciscan and a student of Roger Bacon. The first faint beginnings of experimental science took place among English Franciscans; William himself demonstrates a deductive ability reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes. Sometimes characters in medieval novels who promote modern ideas are annoying and unrealistic, but William comes from the right background to do such things.
The world around the monastery is not stable; Barbara Tuchman justly called this age "The Calamitous 14th Century". Increasing wealth in the cities is changing the social structure; Dante has written works of high seriousness in the vernacular, threatening the Latin learning of the monasteries. Two other great conflicts appear in the story: first, the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor are fighting for preeminence; and second, the Pope and the Franciscans are battling over the question of poverty. Should the Church possess earthly riches and play a role in temporal politics; or should it work among the poor and outcast, emulating (as the Franciscans argue) the poverty of Christ? Besides these two intertwined struggles, there are numerous heretical groups attacking the established order of church and society. Some are puritanical and scorn the wealth and pomp of the papacy; others stir up rebellion against the rich and are rumored to be grossly immoral. Members of these sects become bandits and outlaws when they are persecuted. The monastery shelters many men who have been on the losing side of these disputes with the Pope; some are Franciscans, but others have murkier backgrounds.
Obviously, Rose is not an easy or straightforward read; besides the historical background integral to the tale, there are considerable passages in untranslated Latin. However, the persistent reader can learn a lot from this exciting and shocking story, which perfectly blends erudition with entertainment. The medieval historian Norman Cantor put the film version on his list of the ten best movies for visualizing and understanding life in the Middle Ages.

The latest Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. SUka sgt these two books sampai beli the illustrated version for DVC. The truth in the story tu is very flimsy la tapi jalan crita dia best and very enjoyable. |
