Kin hope for quick end to cremation mix-up
GEORGE TOWN: The grieving family members of a man whose remains were mistakenly claimed and cremated by another family are awaiting DNA test results of the ashes.
The results will verify the identity of the remains and allow Fong Meng Tuck’s three children to have their father’s death certificate issued.
After that, the ashes will be placed at a temple columbarium.
Eldest daughter Fong I Wen, 34, said the results would be out tomorrow “or at latest, Friday”.
“We hope that the blood samples from the three of us will match the DNA in the ashes,” she said.
She and her brothers, Chee Keong, 32, and Chee Hong, 28, gave the samples to Penang Hospital staff on Tuesday afternoon.
Chee Keong said they needed to make the arrangements as soon as possible for their father’s remains to be placed at its final resting place.
“We have until Friday, according to our custom. Another temple has allowed us to place our father’s ashes there without the need for a death certificate, but we prefer that his remains go to Kek Lok Si Temple.
“Kek Lok Si has good feng shui and this will be good for our father in his afterlife, and for us,” he said during the wake at Gat Lebuh Noordin yesterday.
The engineer said they have engaged a lawyer to initiate legal action against Penang Hospital over the mix up.
“We will not take action against the funeral home that made the arrangements for the cremation because they were not aware of the mix-up,” he added.
Fong was killed in a road accident at about 2am on Monday in Maccallum Street, 200m away from his home.
His body was sent to Penang Hospital for a post-mortem and a hospital staff member reportedly released it to the other family by mistake.
The staff member had allegedly not followed procedure for the release of the body and has been suspended from duty.
The family that had the body cremated could not be reached for comment. |
