Report: Barca To Bid ?22m For Vidic

Speculation from the English tabloids suggests that Barcelona have tabled a ?22m bid for defender Nemanja Vidic and are stepping up their attempts to bring the Manchester United defender to the Camp Nou.

The Daily Star have reported that Vidic’s wife is unhappy in Manchester and would be interested in a move to a warmer climate, alerting the new champions of Europe to the Serbian’s possible availability.

Sir Alex Ferguson swooped for the 27-year old in the summer of 2006, clinching his signature from Spartak Moscow for a fee of £7m, and under the Scotsman Vidic has matured into one of the most uncompromising opponents in the English Premier League.

Now it appears that Pep Guardiola wants to add Vidic to his squad as he bids to build on his incredible treble of Spanish Primera Division, Copa del Rey and Champions League triumphs.

Vidic joins Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the Bluagrana’s radar as they look to stay one step ahead of Florentino Perez’s Real Madrid, who are certain to spend big to improve their La Liga challenge next season.

Italian side AC Milan are also thought to have expressed an interest in the Red Devils stopper, who has made over 100 appearances for the English Champions in three successful seasons.

Cristiano Ronaldo could miss the start of pre-season training at Manchester United next month after withdrawing from Portugal's squad for Wednesday's friendly against Estonia with a suspected hernia injury.

Ronaldo, 24, has returned to his home island of Madeira after complaining of pain in the lower abdomen prior to, and after, Saturday's World Cup qualifying victory over Albania in Tirana.

The United winger, who has informed Old Trafford's medical team of his injury, is now awaiting the results of tests on the problem, but it is understood that he is keen to undergo surgery to resolve the injury in order to be fit to resume training when United's first-team squad report back following their summer break on July 6.

Ronaldo has told friends that he is due to fly to Miami on holiday next week and it is believed that his keenness to undergo surgery as quickly as possible is based on his desire to avoid delaying a return to full fitness.

Portugal manager Carlos Queiroz, Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant at Old Trafford, granted Ronaldo permission to miss the Estonia game in Tallinn after Portuguese team doctor Henrique Jones diagnosed a groin injury.

United's medical team hope that a period of rest, rather than surgery, will cure the injury, but if tests confirm a hernia, an operation and three to four weeks of rehabilitation would be required to resolve the injury.

Ronaldo was sidelined for two months last summer after undergoing ankle surgery following Euro 2008.

That injury curtailed Real Madrid's hopes of luring the player to the Bernabeu last summer and, despite the Spanish club's intentions to renew their efforts to sign Ronaldo before the start of next season, United remain steadfast in their determination not to sell the player.

United are understood to have confirmed their interest in Wigan midfielder Antonio Valencia by inquiring about the Ecuador international on Monday.
