Bae Yong-joon, Interview in Japan, "I have thoughts of marrying but it's not working out"

On the 1st, after the three-hour "The Legend Premium Event 2008 in Japan" held in Osaka Kyocera Dome, Bae Yong-joon held an interview with Korean reporters for about thirty minutes in the waiting room. Director Kim Jong-hak of "The Legend" was also there. The following are questions and answers that were exchanged.

-Thoughts on the event held today, with 35000 fans?

Even in the disappointment that came with the end of filming, Director Kim and I said that it was over yet. But now, I have a real feeling that it's over. It was nice today. I was able to meet my family in Asia eye-to-eye. And it was better that I was able to come with the director and fellow actors from "The Legend" this time.

-You also referred to your next work at the event today. (Bae Yong-joon said, "I want to give a different kind of feeling with my voice on the animation of "Winter Sonata" and there's nothing certain, but I'm looking into a drama that is a remake of a Japanese comic".)

I haven't signed anything yet. So it would be difficult to say anything.

-You were hurt while filming "The Legend". How is your health now?

It's still a little uncomfortable to walk. I am getting shots on my knees. For my shoulders, we have to wait 1-2 months and I may have to get surgery. I was seriously hurt during filming of "The Legend" ten days before the end, but I couldn't go to the hospital because I thought I would have to put on a cast, which would stop filming. It hurt so much that I couldn't sleep, and I took pain-killers so I could film. I went to a hospital once after getting hurt, and all the nurses were attending to the emergency patients, so I had to put in pain-killing shots myself (laugh).

-Director Kim said "Bae Yong-joon is faithful to his emotions and pursues perfect acting".

Firstly, I'm grateful. I think I have to stay truthful to my emotions because I can't act. Truthfully, I was surprised as I saw Director Kim working on this work. Director Kim was also hurt during filming, and even though he was in a bad condition, his leadership was outstanding. I sometimes call him father, and sometimes, he feels like a friend. (At this, Director Kim said, "While filming "The Legend", I realized that Bae Yong-joon is here because of his own work and acting. He's a great actor. If it is possible, I would want to work with him again".)

-It's known that you will lend your voice to the animation of "Winter Sonata", which plans to air next year.

That's right. It's planned to do it in Korean, but I have thoughts of also doing it in Japanese.

-In addition to your arrival in Japan, you filmed your fans with a digital camera today too.

I really like taking pictures. I've wanted to take pictures of my family (fans). I am also thinking of making a book introducing famous places in Korea to foreign tourists. This book will have pictures that I took myself.

-You are keeping your long hair that you had for "The Legend".

When my next work is decided, I will change my hair accordingly. There are many uncomfortable aspects about long hair, like using a lot of shampoo and taking a lot of time to dry (laugh).

-While filming "The Legend", there was talk about trouble with Director Kim.

That's not true at all, and that's all because of reporters (laugh). My relationship with Director Kim is very good. He is sometimes like a friend and sometimes like a father. During filming, we also talked about medicine that was good for us (laugh).

-Marriage plans?

My friends and juniors are all marrying, and I do have thoughts about it. But it's not working as I want it to (laugh). Even at home, my parents are talking about marriage. Last year at the MBC Acting Awards, I said I wanted to marry within three years, and I still have that desire. Introduce me (laugh).

-If there's something you want to say to your fans in Korea and Asia.

I believe that the love I receive not just from Korea but from Asia is undeserved. If I cannot repay the love I receive through my acting and movies, I want to repay it some other way. When I find out how, I will let you know.

Main actors' fighting spirit, Will "Iljimae" soar?

The backbone actors of SBS "Iljimae" are becoming a hot issue. They are Lee Moon-sik, Kim Chang-wan, and Ahn Kil-kang.

Lee Moon-sik, who plays the role of Swe-dol, showed his 'passion' by volunteering to taking out his teeth to differentiate from his character in "Damo". The producers, who were moved, inserted the story of his teeth coming out in the drama.

In the drama, Swe-dol will face the danger of getting his wrist cut off from Byeon-shik (Lee Won-jong) because he assaulted Shi-wan. But eventually, it will change to him getting his teeth pulled. They will show him without his front teeth.

Following his role in "King and I", Ahn Kil-kang drew attention when he shaved his head for his role of a fake Buddhist monk. In "Iljimae", he has the important role of Bong-soon's (Lee Yeong-ah) adoptive father and martial arts teacher to Iljimae.

Kim Chang-wan is growing a beard to fulfill the role of king. He is working carefully to exhibit a realistic charisma as the villain who corners his younger brother Lee Won-ho into death.

There is anticipation if the backbone actors will bring more popularity to "Iljimae", which secured its spot as a top drama after its first broadcast.

Lee Wan, Cast as main character for movie "Goose's Dream" - transformation into a boxer

"Goose's Dream" is about the life and dream of a boy Jeong-woo (Lee Wan) who has gambled his life on boxing. It will be a low-budget film, produced by the Korean Film Council, KBS, and the Chonbuk Provincial Government as a HD movie.

Lee Wan plays Jeong-woo, who has been obsessed with boxing since he was young. After meeting Ki-chul (Im Kyeong-eob) who has an inborn talent for boxing, Jeong-woo gives up boxing and lives his own life.

The theme of this movie is that the achievement of a dream starts with not giving up that dream. It is to embrace the hearts of those who have difficulties because of the separation between their dreams of youth and dreams of reality.

Lee Wan is showing his passion by receiving training every day from a former national boxer. He said, "There is a lot of pressure but I want to learn so I don't look awkward as a boxer". Lee Wan worked so hard that his trainer asked him if he had any thought of seriously pursuing boxing.

The movie that contains the transformation of Lee Wan into a boxer and the story of dreams that will unite generations will start filming on May 29.

Actress Kim Min-seon was cast as artist Shin Yun-bok in "Le Grand Chef" Director Jeon Yoon-soo's next work "Portrait of a Beauty". Kim Min-seon, who was cast as Shin Yun-bok, will compete with Moon Geun-yeong, who is currently filming SBS "Painter of the Wind", which is a drama with a similar story.

In order to play the role of the genius artist Shin Yun-bok, Moon Geun-yeong is learning calligraphy and Korean art.

In the movie, Kim Yeong-ho plays artist Kim Hong-do, the teacher of Shin Yun-bok who begins to love her as a woman. In the drama, Kim Hong-do is played by Park Shin-yang.

Actress Kim Ah-joong, Publication of book co-written with Korea University's Journalism professor Kim Kwang-su

Actress Kim Ah-joong's co-written book 'Emotion Communication' was published on May 30.

'Emotion Communication' was divided into six themes of emotions that were essential for the evolution of mankind: fear, anger, disgust, sadness, love, and happiness. For each emotion, it studies an example and type, reaction when it's experienced, and expressions of it in terms of brain science, physiology, psychology, and communication.

Profess Kim Kwang-su approached the emotions in a scholarly way, and Kim Ah-joong expressed what she felt as an actress, and she also was the model for the pictures of these emotions.

Kim Ah-joong is planning to donate all the proceeds from the book to a treatment center for children who have a disability in expressing their emotions.

Yon-sama Draws Media Swarm to NHK

Japan's national broadcaster got a taste of "Yon-sama" fever yesterday. NHK was so overwhelmed by media interest in the press event by the visiting Korean actor Bae Yong Joon (35) that they had to change the venue. Some 300 reporters from 150 Japanese and overseas companies crowded into the NHK studios in Shibuya, Tokyo, far more than turn out when Japan's music stars announce the lineup for annual New Year's Eve concert. Bae is in Japan to plug his latest TV drama series: "Taiou Shijinki" is a large-scale historical fantasy series, with Bae playing a king in ancient Korea. During filming, which extended over two years, he received serious neck injuries and a severed finger ligament during a sword-fight scene. The series aired in Korea at the end of 2007 and received very high audience ratings. A subtitled version was shown on NHK's satellite channel, starting just before before the 24th and final episode aired in Korea. The dubbed version is currently airing on the main terrestrial channel at 11:10pm on Saturday nights. There is clearly still huge fan and media interest here in Bae - thousands turned out to greet his arrival in Japan - but it will be hard for the new series to match the incredible popularity and social phenomenon of "Winter Sonata." The 2002 drama really ignited the Korean pop culture boom when it was shown here in 2004 and is still a big money spinner. Bae and co-star Choi Ji Woo are to reprise their roles in an upcoming anime version of the drama.

Comedian Apologizes for Remark on US Beef

By Kim Rahn
Staff Reporter

Jeong Sun-hee

A female comedian has been forced to apologize for a remark audiences thought undermined candlelit demonstrations protesting the import of American beef.

Jeong Sun-hee, 36, began her radio program on MBC Friday with an apology.

"I thought and thought how I should start. Many people were hurt from my remark, and posted letters denouncing it on the program's Web site. I could see how much you are angry, and I apologize to you once again," she said.

During her program on May 22, she said, "Amid rising iron prices, some people have been stealing manhole covers. People participate in candlelit demonstrations over big issues such as mad cow disease, out of patriotism, but do not feel guilty for such small things as manhole theft, which is a crime. Who knows? Some of those steaming over the big issue and participating in the rally may be such small-scale offenders."

However, despite her tearful apology, citizens are still giving Jeong the cold shoulder.

Audiences immediately began to denounce her, claiming she made light of the ralliers. Jeong apologized for the comment the next day, but public anger has not subsided.

"I'm also a Korean who worries about the same things as you. I didn't intend to neglect public reaction, but thought people would understand me if I stayed calm for a while. I'm sorry again for not understanding you fully and making you angry," she said in Friday's broadcast.

Despite the tearful apology, audiences are still critical. Many said on the Web site that the belated apology will not undo what she said, urging her to quit the show. Internet users are collecting signatures demanding her resignation, with more than 14,000 people signing it so far. They have also urged sponsors of the program to withdraw its sponsorship.

"Maybe people misunderstood her. But Jeong, who deals with the public, should have considered this sensitive issue more seriously and made remarks more carefully,'' an Internet user with ID "himnaera" said.

Comedian's latest gig: Teaching Korean in English on TV show

Sitting in Starbucks with a backpack and his notes out, comedian Kim Young-chul could pass for a student.

Well, he is one. Fresh out of an English language class, Kim is ready for his interview with The Korea Herald - more than ready, in fact.

"My English level is high-intermediate or advanced," said the 33-year-old comedian who attends English language classes three times a week.

He says all this in English, boldly and rapidly, before pulling out a pile of books that he is currently reading.

They're all in English. One book stands out: "2,002 Romantic Ideas," decorated with a hot pink cover.

Clearly, this man is not ashamed of anything. And that has proven to be his formula for success.

The fearless comedian - who has never studied English abroad - has published his own book on learning English, "Ppeon-ppeon-han Youngchul Yeong-eo (Yeongchul's Brave English," Random House; 11,000 won; 248 pp.) and currently has his own corner, "Young-chul's English," on the popular MBC radio program "Jeong-oeui Himanggok."

Kim Young-chul, co-host of "Let`s Speak Korean" [Arirang TV]

So, when Arirang approached him with an offer to co-host the series "Let's Speak Korean," Kim went for it, but not without hesitating.

"At first, I declined the offer very politely," he explained. But when he saw famed singer Patti Kim as a guest on the Arirang TV show "Heart to Heart," he changed his mind. She was very easy and natural, focusing on communicating rather than on speaking perfectly. And he realized that mistakes were not an issue.

Emboldened, Kim signed on as the new emcee of the TV show, "Let's Speak Korean." Now in its fourth season, this show teaches viewers how to speak Korean, in English.

"Arirang TV is a challenge," he said. "It's really hard. We have to use English and Korean at the same time."

"Hard" is an understatement. The 15-minute long show begins with a short sitcom in which prominent Korean celebrities enact a common household situation.

After watching the two-minute-long mini-sitcom, co-hosts Kim and Lisa Kelley pluck three key Korean phrases from it, explaining what they mean and how to use them.

Switching back and forth between English and Korean, the hosts navigate the subtle nuances of both languages.

Kim, initially more concerned about his English, was blown away by how complex his own native language could be.

"Korean is very hard," said Kim, admitting that he has made mistakes while speaking his own language during the show.

"Sometimes I get stuck," he added, after recounting an episode in which he couldn't pronounce a common Korean phrase correctly.

But tongue-tied or not, Kim is entertaining. And his easy-going sense of humor brings a much-needed levity to this educational program.

Kim and Kelley - who has been on the show for the past three seasons - act out little humorous skits to help explain the phrases of the day, making them fun and easy to learn.

"We watch the sitcom in advance and think up little episodes," says Kim, who thinks he and Kelley are a perfect match.

Watching them play off each other, singing and joking, one can't deny that the two have a bit of Laurel and Hardy going on there.

"Once we start filming, we do even better," Kim says, adding that sometimes they improvise a little.

But, with Kim as a partner, it would be hard not to be funny. Sitting across from him now as he drops cute English phrases like "talk to the hand" with the ease of a native, one can't help but think that some people are just born with it.

"Let's Speak Korean" begins airing on Monday, June 9 on Arirang TV. The show is scheduled to play Mondays through Fridays at 12:15 p.m.

Yet another Joseon Dynasty hero swoops into prime time slot

Is it a time for heroes? SBS and KBS think so. Fast on the heels of SBS' masked marauder, Iljimae, KBS' Chil-woo, a veritable Joseon-style Batman, will swoop into the Monday and Tuesday night time slot on June 17.

Originally set to air tonight, the historical-action miniseries called "Choi Kang Chil Woo (Strongest Chil Woo)" got pushed back a week. News reports indicate that the date was delayed to avoid direct competition with MBC's "Isan," the final episode of which is set for June 16.

But "Isan" is just one of the many challenges that hero Chil-woo faces. With SBS set to crush Chil-woo before he has a chance to put up a fight, KBS needs to pull out all the stops early on to have a chance of winning.

SBS' currently popular "Iljimae" and its upcoming blockbuster "Sikgaek" are formidable foes in the race to get high ratings. And Chil-woo may not have what it takes to beat its competitors.

But singer-turned-actor Eric, who signed on to play the dark hero, disagrees. At last week's press conference, the 29-year old celebrity, also known as Mun Chong-hyok, said, "It is true; there are many similarities (to Iljimae) ... Initial comparisons cannot be avoided, but, with time, that will change. And the two shows do not air on the same days."

As Eric pointed out, "Iljimae" plays on Wednesday and Thursday nights, and "Choi Kang Chil Woo" will play on Monday and Tuesday nights. But will viewers want to tune into these heroes four nights in a row?

After all, both heroes are out for revenge. They both wear masks, carry out their deeds in the night, and were raised by foster parents. Add to that the long-awaited gastronomical epic, "Sikgaek," which is set to play on Monday and Tuesday nights starting June 16, and things are looking bleak for Chil-woo.

But the fight isn't over yet. Eric's star power -- this boy band rapper won audiences over in the hit MBC drama " Phoenix" (2004) -- may draw in a few fans. As this is his first historical drama, Eric has the opportunity to prove he can pull off the complex role of Chil-woo.

This KBS hero is a low-ranking officer by day and an assassin by night. The jovial and happy-go-lucky commoner transforms into the head of an organization of assassins which is trained to punish the corrupt.

If Iljimae is a bit more of a super-powered Robin Hood, then Chil-woo is a medieval Batman. Donning the black eye-mask -- which bears a striking resemblance to Batman's, minus the ears -- this dark hero delivers vengeance with a bite.

Based on the actions of one Kang-byun Chil-woo from the "Annals of the Joseon Dynasty," this historical romance travels back 400 years to bring audiences a slightly comical but mainly serious epic.

"The characters are drawn from fun episodes from the 'Annals of the Joseon Dynasty,' said director Park Man-young at a recent press conference. "This drama is not a fusion drama. Just the action sequences may seem a bit mixed because of the martial arts techniques used in place of more traditional swordfighting."

According to director Park, ordinary swordfighting techniques seemed too cruel, so they opted for less violent martial arts stunts.

But just how far will the hero's superpowers go? Will Chil-woo have some magical weapons, like Iljimae's invisible cloak?

Judging from the preview, this action romance looks more down-to-earth, but audiences will have to tune in to see for themselves.

"Choi Kang Chil Woo" airs on Monday and Tuesday nights on KBS 2 TV at 9:55 p.m. starting June 17.
