"Cat Street" to be adapted to live-action

Manga magazine Bessatsu Margaret (Shueisha) has announced that Yoko Kamio's "Cat Street" manga series is being turned into a live-action drama. The story revolves around a former child actress who has become withdrawn due to a traumatic event. As a "stray cat" of society, she finally finds her place at a special school for people with similar social problems.
The drama will reportedly air this summer on NHK.

Shizu-chan to play boxer in NHK drama

Comedienne Shizu-chan (Nankai Candies) will star in an NHK drama series this summer. Currently untitled, the drama tells the story of an OL who takes up boxercise to help relieve her stress, and she ends up becoming a heavyweight boxer.
The show will air in NHK's Thursday 8:00pm slot, starting on June 19.

"Hana Kimi" SP confirmed

Last summer's "Hanazakari no Kimitachi e" drama series is returning for a one-episode special. Starring Maki Horikita, Shun Oguri, and Toma Ikuta, the show was very popular, especially among female viewers. It averaged 17.3% ratings, with the final episode reaching 21.0%.
According to Fuji TV, the special will take place half a year after the series' end. With Osaka Gakuen getting ready for an upcoming Valentine's Day event, Sano (Oguri) and Nakatsu (Ikuta) reflect on the final week of their last summer vacation, which falls into the timeline of the original series between episodes 7 and 8. The special also includes a graduation scene and addresses the relationship between Mizuki (Horikita) and Sano.
Filming begins on Wednesday, but no broadcast date has been specified yet.

Hiroki Uchi joins "Osen" cast

The next step in the comeback of former NEWS member Hiroki Uchi is his first regular drama series role in almost three years. He will appear in NTV's "Osen," which stars actress Yu Aoi as the "okami" of a long-standing Tokyo restaurant. Uchi will play Yoshio Ezaki, a young and confident chef who comes to work at the restaurant.
In 2005, Uchi was suspended for underage drinking. He was subsequently removed from NEWS and demoted to trainee status within Johnny's Jimusho, but he finally returned to television work with the "Isshun no Kaze ni Nare" drama mini-series that aired in February.
"Osen" premieres on April 22.

Tortoise Matsumoto to release first original solo song

Ulfuls vocalist Tortoise Matsumoto will release a single titled "Namida wo Todokete" this June. Though he has previously released a solo cover album, this is his first original song as a solo artist.
"Namida wo Todokete" has also been chosen as the theme song for the upcoming drama series "Hokaben," which stars Aya Ueto. The drama premieres on April 16.

"Hana Yori Dango Final" guest cast

The guest cast of the "Hana Yori Dango Final" movie includes Kinya Kitaoji, Naohito Fujiki, and EXILE's AKIRA, it was learned on Tuesday. All three characters will be obstacles in the relationship between the main characters Makino (Mao Inoue) and Domyouji (Jun Matsumoto).
It has not yet been revealed what Kitaoji's character will be. AKIRA, who is making his big screen debut with this movie, has been cast as a robber.
Fujiki previously played the role of Rui Hanazawa in the 1995 film version that starred Yuki Uchida and Shosuke Tanihara. In the new movie, he will once again play a love rival to Domyouji.
"Hana Yori Dango Final" opens on June 28.

Another TV tie-in for Utada

Yet another song from Hikaru Utada's new album "HEART STATION" has been given a tie-in. The opening track, "Fight the Blues," will be used as the theme song for the TBS show "Houdou Tokushuu NEXT." This is her first tie-in with a news program.
The show, which is a revamped version of the currently airing "JNN Houdou Tokushuu," starts on April 5 in the network's Saturday 5:30pm time slot.

Two theme songs for spring dramas

The band Aqua Timez has been given the task of providing the theme song for the third "Gokusen" drama series, which starts on NTV on April 19. The song, called "Niji," will go on sale May 8.
Meanwhile, Mariya Takeuchi will sing the theme for TBS's "Around 40." Titled "Shiawase no Monosashi," the song will also feature starring actress Yuki Amami as part of the chorus. The single goes on sale May 21.

"Bara no nai Hanaya" finale hits 22%

The final episode of Fuji TV's "Bara no nai Hanaya," which aired on Monday, achieved ratings of 22.1%, with a peak of 26.3%. The whole series averaged 18.8%, making it #1 of all the dramas this season.
The next highest ratings for the season were held by "Aibou 6" (16.5% average) and "Saito-san" (15.5% average). The latter achieved 19.6% with its finale.

YA-KYIM gets first drama series theme

The 3-girl hip-hop group YA-KYIM is releasing its first theme song for a drama series next season. Titled "Super Looper," the song will be used in TV Asahi's mystery/comedy series "Kimi Hannin Janai yo ne?" which stars Shihori Kanjiya and Jun Kaname.
The group has actually been around since 1999, when they formed as elementary school students. They made their major label debut in 2005 but never had a big hit. With this new song, they have moved to Warner Music and are hoping to finally find success.

Veteran actor Tanaka Kunie (75) is to take on his first drama lead role in more than five years, it was announced yesterday. Best known for the long-running "Kita no Kuni" series, which was most recently revived for a special in September 2002, Tanaka will star in the Fuji TV special "Kujira to Medaka". The story tells of a company president who is ousted by his son and unsure how to live out his remaining years. He encounters a junior high school girl (Shida Mirai, 14), also trying to figure out how to live her life. Written by director Matsuyama Zenzou (82), the drama will air in May.
