Panic as monitor lizards run free
The two monitor lizards that ran wild in the city centre before being caught
by a hawker yesterday evening. The reptiles were later taken away by a man
and what happened to them after that is not known.
JOHOR BARU: Workers cleaning a drain near the Johor Baru Central police station on Wednesday found more than just rubbish.
When the drain cover was lifted, they discovered two monitor lizards inside. The animals, measuring about 1.5 metres each, bolted while the workers fled in the 6pm incident.
The lizards roamed free in the city centre for some time, causing a stir among the rush- hour crowd.
Raymond Wong, who works in Singapore, said he spotted the lizards as he was about to go to a money changer.
"I have seen many rats in the city抯 back lanes but this was the first time I have come across monitor lizards.
"Luckily, they were not aggressive."
The lizards were caught by a hawker who tied them to a fence. Soon after, the spot was thronged by passers-by who wanted to take a closer look at the animals.
The hawker, who declined to be named, said the reptiles might have entered the city from the Johor Strait before seeking refuge in the drain.
He later gave away the reptiles to a man. A money changer said the local authority should clean all the drains in the city.
"Running through the city centre is the polluted Sungai Segget. I believe the lizards must have entered the drains from the river." Monitor lizards are mainly found in burrows built near river banks.
Feeding on crabs, snakes and other small animals, the reptiles run faster than humans as they have powerful leg muscles. A monitor抯 bite can be painful as the reptile has powerful jaws.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
okay - that lizards look scary - i am not the one who found it -
and yet - this is what happened when we never took care of our
environment -- perhaps - this monitor lizards didnt know where else
to go - semua tempat kotor teruk - depa pun suspense nak gi mana --
i think they are quite dangerous -- not as dangerous as gila monster
or komodo dragon but still - i dun like their face -- reminds me of crocodiles -
any reptile - they are usually dangerous (maybe except for gecko - eventhen
lots of people 'geli' -- with geckos) --
anyway - the point is - let's hope we have some sense of cleaning environment
so that -- this monitor lizard or any dangerous animals wont be roamed around
cuz of dirty places - and disturb their habitats - |

Kelantan to use micro-organism method to clean river
By IAN MCINTYRE
KOTA BARU: The state drainage and irrigation department (DID) has launched the first ever attempt to rehabilitate the worst polluted river here by using a special micro-organism method.
The method involves the transplanting of a generic designed mirco-organism into the mud sediments at the riverbed.
"It is the first time Kelantan rivers have been exposed to the micro-organism form of rehabilitating," said state DID director Lim Chow Hock after the launching of the rehabilitation effort at Sungai Pengkalan Chepa by state Infrastructure committee chairman Mej (B) Md Anizam Ab Rahman.
Lim said such a method has been applied to rivers in Perlis, Penang and Selangor where initial findings have indicated an improvement in the riverwater quality in some cases.
Currently, the DID has transplanted the micro organism into the mud along a 2km stretch of the river.
There are about 1,500 forms of rivers in Kelantan where the biggest water artery is Sungai Kelantan which dominates the landscape in the state while Sungai Pengkalan Chepa is currently, the worst polluted.
Lim said if the method is proven successful then the DID would adopt it for most of the river rehabilitation efforts in the state.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
well whatever method they are using as long as the goal is
to have the river cleanse --- salute to the DID for making
a good attempt to clean the environment - |

Setiap hari bau busuk
Laporan OMAR OSMAN

Pollution: Noxious smell irks residents
By : NORHAYATI JUSOH, Kuala Lumpur
BOUGHT a house in Taman Kuning Permai, Batu 3, Jalan Air Kuning, Taiping.
A month ago while visiting the housing estate, I noticed an overpowering noxious smell of ammonia emitted from a latex coagulating factory situated opposite the estate.
The factory has been there for many years but at that time, the town was small and there were no houses in that area. The town has expanded and more development is coming.
We have laws against pollution including air, chemical and noise.
Don抰 we have a law against odour pollution? How are the residents in that area to live with the unpleasant smell emitted daily by the factory?
I hope the Department of Environment can look into this problem.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
cant believe they threw ammonia near housing estate --
well didnt matter where -- point is ammonia is toxic substance --
i am sure not only in taiping this kind of pollution happened but
many areas and hopefully the residents will take seriously about

Kilang makanan ayam berdegil
wa rasa kilang tu mmg dah kurang ajar patut gomen ambik tindakan cepat jangan sampai banyak penyakit baru nak cari jalan penyelesaian kalau wa wa bakar aje kilang tu hehe |

Residents raise a stink over blocked drain
KLANG: Residents of Jalan Seri Siantan 46 and 44 of Taman Sri Andalas have been enduring a foul stench emanating from a 1m-deep drain in front of their house for more than 10 years.
V. Thangaraju claims evenings are the worst with swarms of mosquitoes
around the drain.
That particular stretch of drain is stagnant and a breeding place for mosquitoes.
V. Thangaraju who moved into the area last December said every evening, around 6.30pm, mosquitos swarmed the area and the smell was also unbearable.
"The mud is about 30cm deep and is blocking the water flow."
He has complained four times to the Klang Municipal Council since he moved in but no action was taken.
"After each complaint, there will always be people taking pictures of the drain but nothing happens afterwards," he said.
After the second complaint, a letter from Alam Flora indicated that the drain had uneven surface with parts of it affected by mudslides.
But there the drain remains, unchanged and smelly.
Norchadah Ibrahim, 51 said she and her husband had made many complaints but still the problem was not solved.
"I urge the MPK not to wait for dengue cases before making a move," she said.
Another resident, Anantha Vass, 53 said the problem had been going on since 1982.
"We don't even bother to make any complaints now as nothing has been done with all our complaints," he said.
Meanwhile, council public relations officer Norfiza Mahfiz said a letter had been sent to the Department of Environment Klang to monitor the cleaning work undertaken by Alam Flora.
"As the residents claim it is clogged, we forwarded the matter to the engineering department as the drain has uneven surface," she said.
kat rumah wa pun ada masalah macam ni clogged drain lepas tu busuk bau sampah sarap yang tersekat! dah called alam flora tapi hampehhhh :@ |

Mata pencarian nelayan terjejas
Dicemari sisa kilang kelapa sawit
Kenyataan Darrel dipersetujui Presiden Persatuan Perlindungan Alam Sekitar Sabah Datuk Sue Jayasuria yang mahu pihak industri kelapa sawit segera menghentikan perbuatan mencemarkan Sungai Kinabatangan.

More dead fish, this time in Kuching
By JACK WONG
KUCHING: Hundreds of fish were found dead in the large man-make lake of the popular Malaysia-China Friendship Park at Jalan Song here.
City South Council workers were shocked to see the dead fish, like ikan kaloi and talapia, floating in the lake.
They took hours to clear the dead fish, some of which weighed more than one kilo, for burial.
Council public relations officer Winnie Lau said the fish could have died of suffocation due to the lack of oxygen in the murky water.
揟he public have fed the fish with buttered bread and other foods, and this might have caused the water to become oily and murky, thereby cutting off the oxygen supply, |

Masalah longgokan sejuta tayar terbuang belum selesai
10-10-2007

Our rivers getting cleaner
By : Elizabeth John
Sungai Jelutong in Penang is a Class V river which is
very polluted and cannot be used for any purpose at all.
KUALA LUMPUR: For once, here's a little good news about the country's beleaguered rivers.
Last year, the number of rivers in the cleanest category was almost double that of 2005.
The number of polluted river basins were also down by more than half.
And as long as river clean-up and rehabilitation efforts are sustained, Malaysia can expect this happy trend to continue, says the Department of Environment.
Last year, only seven of Malaysia's 146 river basins were categorised as polluted, down from 15 the year before.
All the polluted river basins were in Peninsular Malaysia, with Johor topping the list.
Sungai Segget, Sungai Tebrau, Sungai Danga and Kawasan Pasir Gudang river basins in Johor are still in the polluted category as they were in previous years.
Next are the infamous Sungai Juru and Sungai Pinang river basins in Penang, according to the Environment Quality Report 2006.
Selangor has just one, the Sungai Buloh river basin.
The other eight river basins had moved one notch into the "slightly polluted" category.
The report says that the Water Quality Index of the eight -- Sungai Merbok, Sungai Bayan Lepas, Sungai Klang, Sungai Jejawi, Sungai Merlimau, Sungai Air Baloi, Sungai Kempas and Sungai Sembulan -- had improved.
For a long time, these and other rivers had been the subject of reports of worsening pollution, poor quality drinking water and examples of failed awareness programmes.
The government had even set aside RM200 million under the Ninth Malaysia Plan for river rehabilitation.
According to national standards, a river is classified from Class I to V, with Class I being the cleanest and Class V, the worst polluted.
The "class" of a river determines what it can be used for; whether for drinking, bathing, agriculture or nothing at all.
Last year, the DOE's annual report on the state of the environment showed that there were 14 Class I rivers last year compared with eight in 2005.
Water from such rivers can be supplied to consumers with practically no treatment and can also support the most sensitive aquatic species.
However, five rivers that were in Class I in 2005 fell to Class II last year.
In this class, the river water would have to be conventionally treated before being distributed for consumption.
A number of rivers within the eight basins that showed improvement moved up from Class IV to Class III.
In the Sungai Klang basin, for instance, all but one of its 11 rivers have been categorised as Class III, compared with six in 2005.
Under National Water Quality Standards, a Class III river can be used to supply drinking water but only with extensive treatment
A Class IV river can only be used for irrigation.
A Class V river is the worst and is termed a septic river.
Of the 146 basins monitored, there are two -- Sungai Jelutong in Penang and Sungai Tukang Batu in Johor, says the report -- which can't be used for any purpose.
In terms of sources of pollution, 42 basins were categorised as polluted by suspended solids last year -- a marked increase from just 34 in 2005.
Suspended solids are mainly the result of earthworks and land clearing.
Twenty-two basins were categorised as polluted by Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and 41 by ammoniacal nitrogen.
BOD is contributed largely by untreated or partially treated sewage, as well as agriculture and industrial discharge.
The sources of ammoniacal nitrogen are domestic sewage and livestock farming.
Three rivers, Sungai Selangor, Sungai Terengganu and Sungai Melaka had recorded lower pH values, making them slightly acidic.
A low pH is an indicator of low levels of dissolved oxygen in the river water, which could be harmful to aquatic life in the river if allowed to worsen.
Since the late 1970s, the DOE has measured the levels of many pollutants, including BOD and ammoniacal nitrogen, at hundreds of monitoring stations along rivers to determine their condition and classification.
The worst rivers will have the highest level of pollutants and the lowest level of dissolved oxygen.
Dissolved oxygen is crucial to the survival of aquatic life and is one of the most important indicators of environmental health.
The status of a river basin is classified based on the average pollutant readings from all the monitoring stations that are within it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
let's hope it will get cleaner - cuz if i maybe bold to say
most of the rivers in malaysia by far the dirtiest i've ever seen
minus menam chao phraya --
