Rio: I'm different these days

Rio Ferdinand is a social networking aficionado and he says using his twitter account (@rioferdy5) has helped change people's perception of him off the field…

Away from the pitch, your Twitter account has proved extremely popular. What first prompted you to delve into the world of social networking?
It was mainly to show people the real me. A lot of people perceive me in a certain way and a lot of that’s down to how the media have chosen to portray me. It’s the image they’ve painted of me. I used to see loads of images in the papers of me with flashy earrings, big diamond chains or gold watches, but that’s not me any more. Obviously it was me at one point, but that was a long time ago, when I was a kid and the money was all new to me. But it’s unfair to use those pictures now. I’m a different person these days. I’m much more mature.

Do you think people understand that now?
Well, Twitter’s been good because it’s given me a platform to show people what I’m really like. I’ve heard people talking about me and they expect me to be on red carpets week in, week out. But I’ve only ever been on two red carpets in my entire life! At least on Twitter people can get an understanding of how you are, rather than how the media portray you. I’ve even had messages from fans thanking me for showing them what life for a professional footballer is really like.

But there are still misconceptions out there about footballers, right?
Definitely. Some people think being a footballer is all about beautiful cars, big holidays and private jets. I swear some people think I get a jet to go down to the shop to buy a pint of milk! When I get on a train people ask me what on earth I’m doing there. They think I must have bought the train or something. It’s weird. I’m on the train because I have to get from A to B and it’s the quickest and most convenient way for me to get there. Little things, like me tweeting when I’m sitting on a train, hopefully help people realise that footballers are actually human.

So would you say that Twitter has closed the gap between footballers and fans a little bit?
Absolutely. A lot of fans complain that they’re disconnected from players nowadays and that’s probably a fair comment. I can understand why they’d say that. But not all of us are like that. I love responding to fans and getting into debates with them. I think that it’s been a really positive experience. Every week – daily, almost – I get people telling me that I’ve inspired them or that my tweets have made them laugh. Some thank me for offering a connection to the club – some people feel that they get closer to Manchester United through it.

You’ve now amassed in excess of half-a-million followers. I think it was Spiderman who once said: “With great power comes great responsibility...”
Yeah, that applies to Twitter, without a doubt. I’m well aware of the audience that I’ve got and that I have a responsibility to make sure I stay within certain boundaries. And there are boundaries. I’m playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I have to be careful sometimes. There have been quite a few occasions where I’ve consulted the club’s communications department before tweeting about certain things, and there are other things that I know are definitely off limits. But that’s fine – I understand that: the club and the team always comes first.

This interview first appeared in Inside United, the official club magazine.

Match Pack: Arsenal

Sir Alex and Arsene Wenger do battle for the 44th time as bosses of United and Arsenal...

Form guide
Following consecutive losses to Chelsea and Liverpool in the Barclays Premier League, United are keen to get back to winning ways in the FA Cup. A home draw bodes well; Sir Alex’s men are unbeaten in 20 Old Trafford fixtures this season, including a 1-0 win over Arsenal in December. The Gunners visit M16 on the back of a disappointing Champions League defeat to Barcelona on Tuesday, as Arsene Wenger’s injury-ravaged side exited the competition at the will of the Catalan giants for a second year running.

Ins and outs
Nemanja Vidic is set to return from a one-match suspension, while Rio Ferdinand (calf) faces a race to make the match. Nani will miss out (gashed leg) as will Anderson (knee), while Jonny Evans, Ji-sung Park and Antonio Valencia are close to returning but unlikely to start, and may not be involved at all. Arsenal have mixed injury news ahead of the trip to Old Trafford. The Gunners have confirmed Robin van Persie will start against the Reds, although captain Cesc Fabregas (hamstring) has been ruled out. Wojciech Szczesny (finger) was forced off at the Nou Camp and is also unavailable, as are likely to be Theo Walcott (ankle) and Alex Song (knee).

Star man
With strength, versatility and a keen eye for a pass, Jack Wilshere is an exciting talent. Following a successful loan spell with Bolton Wanderers last season, the 19-year old has been thrust into the heart of Arsenal's midfield - 38 appearances, two goals and a couple of England caps later, Wilshere hasn't looked back.

Manager
Sir Alex’s old sparring partner Wenger is the second longest-serving manager (after the boss) in English football, having joined the Gunners in September 1996. Since then, the Gunners boss has lifted five Premier League titles and four FA Cups. The Frenchman has also instilled a recognised style of football at the Emirates Stadium. However, they are without a trophy since 2005's FA Cup triumph - and even then it was pinched from United's grasp - and having already lost out on the Carling Cup and succumbing in Europe, he's under pressure to deliver substance as well as style.

Referee
Chris Foy will take charge of this FA Cup quarter-final tie having refereed the Reds five times this season, most notably in the Manchester Derby at Eastlands. Foy, whose only red card of the season was given to Newcastle’s Ryan Taylor last weekend, has officiated three Arsenal matches.

Rivals watch
The three other sixth-round ties consist of Birmingham v Bolton, Stoke v West Ham and Manchester City v Reading.

Timely boost for United treble hopes

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes he has found the perfect tonic to lift the club's treble bid.

Antonio Valencia is set to return to United's squad for Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final showdown with Arsenal - Ferguson admits the team have sorely missed the winger.

"He was fantastic last season, absolutely brilliant," Ferguson was quoted in the Sun as saying.

"He was a great signing, he really was.

"The great thing about him was he takes the ball with such great strength and balance. He can take the ball up to the other end of the pitch for you. We missed that pace and acceleration.

"Although Nani has done fantastic - I mean he's been a revelation this season - we've missed [Valencia]."

Ferguson's £16million signing from Wigan Athletic has not played a game for United since breaking his ankle in a Champions League clash with Rangers back in September.

There can be no doubt Valencia's return is timely considering that Nani faces time on the sidelines with a shin injury he picked up in United's 3-1 loss to Liverpool at the weekend.

Ferguson cannot wait to have both star midfielders back again to boost United's hunt for a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophy haul.

"We can use Nani or Antonio on the left - that would give us really good width and speed," he said.

Valencia did travel with United's squad to Anfield last weekend but did not feature.

welcome back!!

Hernandez: We're ready to recover

United’s successive league defeats have given the players all the determination they need to put on a show against Arsenal in the FA Cup, says Javier Hernandez.

The Mexican was as hurt as anyone by last weekend’s setback at Liverpool and the frustrating loss to Chelsea, but insists nobody in the camp is feeling sorry for themselves – far from it.

Instead the Reds are looking forward to an enticing cup tie and the chance to gain a psychological edge over the Gunners as the title race heads into the final straight.

Chicharito told United Review: "The mood among the players is good. We’ve discussed what went wrong [in the last two games] and what we can improve on, and now we’re looking ahead.

"Everyone here – the manager, players and all the staff – is determined to respond. We have the opportunity to get back to winning ways by beating Arsenal.

"This is the crucial part of the season and we’re all looking forward to it."

Hernandez’s consolation goal at Anfield was his 14th of the season, and he admits his maiden campaign for the Reds could hardly have gone better.

"I was expecting to be on the bench and playing for the Reserves more, so I’m delighted to have played so many games," the 22-year-old added.

"I’m really enjoying myself and hope to play a further part in the team winning trophies this season."
