Steven Gerrard has today committed his long-term future to Liverpool by signing an extension to his contract with the Reds.

The news completes a great 24 hours for the Anfield skipper, who signed his new deal at Melwood this afternoon after firing the winner in the first-leg of the Carling Cup semi-final at Manchester City last night.

"I'm very happy," said Gerrard today. "It's a very proud day for myself and my family."It comes on the back of a fantastic team performance last night when we got the result we were looking for. Hopefully we can finish the job off in two weeks time and take all of our magnificent fans down to Wembley for a day out."The contract extension coming the day after has been the icing on the cake so it has been a perfect 24 hours."This is the club I love and is the club I have supported since I was a young boy. I am living the dream as the captain of one of the biggest clubs in the world. I love coming to work every day and the experiences I have had since I was eight years of age and first signed for the club, I wouldn't change them for the world. To extend that and to hopefully have some more good times in a red shirt is what I want."There will be more highs and lows, there's no doubt about it as that's part and parcel of being a football player at a top club. The important thing is that you react well to the lows and experience more of the highs. I'm confident moving forward that the club is going in the right direction. We've got a fantastic team, we've got the right owners in place and the right team behind our team, so I'm really confident we'll have more good experiences in the future."Gerrard has also agreed to take up an ambassadorial role at Liverpool Football Club once his illustrious playing career draws to a close."It's really flattering for me that the club have offered me the chance to stay when I eventually hang my boots up," he added. "Hopefully that will be in many years to come because I want to play for as long as I can."I'll know myself when it's time to hang my boots up and then hopefully I can stay involved with the club and set the right example for youngsters coming through.

Liverpool and Newcastle are monitoring FC Twente's Luuk de Jong but neither side has made contact over a possible transfer, according to the striker's agent.

Clubs across Europe are thought to be chasing the 21-year-old Dutchman, who has already reportedly spurned interest from Serie A side Fiorentina this month.

Premier League rivals Liverpool and Newcastle have previously been linked with De Jong and his agent, Louis Laros, has confirmed their interest.

But Laros says neither club has made an approach and expects the Netherlands international, contracted at Twente until 2014, to stay in Enschede this winter.

"I don't think a transfer is possible [to Liverpool or Newcastle] because I don't think FC Twente will let him leave in the winter transfer period," De Jong's agent told International Business Times.

"If there is a possible transfer then I think it is at the end of the season.

"I haven't received a phone call from Liverpool or Newcastle that they are completely interested in Luuk de Jong. For this moment, I think it is just a rumour.

"I know they [Liverpool and Newcastle] are watching him but I have had no direct contact with both clubs over a possible transfer."

Laros says Newcastle are also keeping an eye on De Jong's older brother Siem, who plays at Eredivisie rivals Ajax, and highly-rated Sporting Lisbon forward Ricky van Wolfswinkel, thought to be a target of Manchester United.

"I spoke to Newcastle about Luuk [de Jong], his brother Siem and Ricky van Wolfswinkel but I only know they are watching, for a possible transfer it's too early," he added.

"I didn't receive a phone call to start negotiations; they are only watching him at the moment.

"Maybe I will get a phone call tomorrow from the club saying they are ready to start negotiations but until then, nothing is happening."

He added: "Clubs like Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester United and Arsenal they are watching every good young player in Europe, and these guys are one of those players who could be interesting for a lot of clubs.

"They are watching them but they are also watching a lot of other great young players. There has been nothing yet

Liverpool FC are reportedly interested in Marseille striker Loic Remy.

Remy, 25, has been one of the stars in an under perfroming Marseille side that are struggling to keep up with the pace-setters in League-1.

Before moving to Marseille from Nice in the summer of 2010, Remy courted the interest of top clubs from around europe, including the Reds, before deciding to play his football in the south of France.

Sporting Lisbon youngster Joao Teixeira has attracted interest from Liverpool after some eye catching performances in the Next Gen tournament. Teixeira, 18, is yet to make a first team appearence for Sporting but he has impressed in Europe's youth 'Champions League' competition.

Liverpool are reported as being interested in Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.

Zaha, 19, has attracted the interest of many Premier League clubs with his performances this season, including being an integral part of Palace's march to Wembley in the Carling Cup.

It is thought that any move for Zaha would have to wait until his teams' fate in the cup is decided.

Liverpool and Blackburn target Esteban Granero could snub England and remain in Spain with Malaga.

The attacking midfielder, known as the Pirate, has fallen down the pecking order at Real Madrid under former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and is set for a January move.

Blackburn had been hoping to land the 24-year-old on a loan deal as they battle to stave off relegation but Real are keen on offloading the playmaker permanently. Liverpool have also been monitoring his situation.

The 2009-10 season was Granero's best at Madrid when he was managed by Manuel Pellegrini, who is now the boss at big-spending Malaga.

Granero has played just 11 La Liga minutes this season and the former Spain Under-21 star needs to find a new club - with Pellegrini eager to manage him again.

Carling Cup rivals Liverpool and Manchester City are battling to sign 16-year-old Bristol Rovers speedster Shaquille Hunter, according to reports.

The 16-year-old winger is also wanted by Fulham, and another three un-named Premier League clubs, say Sky Sports.

They claim Rovers may decide to cash in on Hunter now, rather than risk losing him for less this summer if the Elite Player Performance Plan is adopted.

Ghana youth midfielder Mumuni Abubakar is set for a two-week trial with Liverpool.

The 18-year-old was recently voted the Sport Writers Association's Ghana Premier League Player of the Year for 2011, and is tipped for a bright future.

Abubakar caught the eye of Liverpool scouts playing for Ghana's U20 side in Italy back in November, and Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to take a closer look at the African ace, inviting him to spend some time at Anfield with the club's reserve and Academy sides.

"Liverpool will assess him for ten days and then take a decision but I'm confident he's not coming back to Ghana," confirmed FIFA agent Oliver Arthur.

"He is a promising player and I wish him all the best."

Mancini, Gerrard 'panas'

Gerrard muncul wira The Kops apabila menyudahkan penalti pada minit ke-13 selepas pertahanan City, Stefan Savic menjatuhkan Daniel Agger.

- AFP

Perang mulut Mancini-Gerrard

"Saya rasa keputusan pengadil tepat.

- AFP

Dalglish nafi jual Carroll

- Agensi
