i'm always confused when it comes to using such phrases

anyway, another problem is that when making sentences
i tends to make them up in malay(vitually), then translate into english...
how do i overcome such problems - as, how do i make sentences directly english
(even when writing this, i'm thinking/phrasing the sentences in malay, afterwhich,
i translate them into english)

i found that this way of writing has lots of cons;
1st u tends to have more direct translation to ur sentences....
it also slow [is there such a word as 'slowen'] ur reaction to questions being asked...
and of course ur vocabulary much be wide enough for the translation process


hope u can share ur tips on these (or is it this)....


PS: hope u understand what i'm writing, bcos i got trouble in explaining to people... for sure i cant write manuals...hehehe

well before i also have the same problem like u..then currently im taking english class and my teacher said that i must discpline myself to think in english..so when u talk u must think in english..same like writing an essay or something like that..actually it takes time to think in malay then translate the word in english

I've come across 2 individuals in my company. (they have resigned for a better offer)

Both of them are senior engineers and both graduated in UK. Eg of what they would say
during a management meeting.

"Good mornings to everyones. Let me shares with you on ours findings on the contaminations issues. There are threes majors reasons for its. Number ones is due to .............. Number twos is because of the heats. Number threes is because .............."

well, i c .... discipline huh...
tendancy of thinking in your native language is quite high
moreover, english language is not your core  language...
no doubt, i should give it a try...

do your class concentrate more on writing or conversation in english???

I think they have pronunciation problem. Not as if they intend to add 's' to every of their words. Did they??

Well, some people have problem in pronuncing the letter 'r'... i'm a good example....hehehehe

Or is it that they are trying to be sarcastic, imitating one of you who could not converse properly

PS: is 'pronuncing' spelt correctly??

i think it should be 'pronouncing'...and 'pronunciation'

hehe.... he's a great guy, really and I feel a bit bad sharing his bad trait. He was a senior engineer before, but he is now one of the management consultant in an MNC company. His knowledge in engineering is superb.

I hope that his English has improved, what more with him drawing a 5 figure salary now. But I can still  remember the good old days. Having him in the conference room is really amusing and entertaining. It beats the normal boring *yawn* meeting that we used to have......

i think i met a few people like u mentioned.

even though she didnt put an 's' at every sentence, she pronounces each word with an 'r' instead. the r is usually at the last syllable of a word. yeah, its really obvious and in fact one of us did ask her straightaway "did i just hear u putting an 'r' at every sentence, or is it my ear?"
even her 'umm fillers' are r-included. i know, IT IS not a nice thing to laugh at people's quirkiness but its good enough to make yourself concious of your actions after that.

swear to myself that i learn to speak english like a learnt person.

this is very normal problem occurred to most malay students
(just like when i have to write a sentences in arabic - i did exactly that

i guess to overcome such situation, you just have to keep writing
and reading a lot of english books and familiarize yourself with
their phrases and sentences  -  it helps i think -

i found that this way of writing has lots of cons;

it slows down your reaction to those
omit 'being asked'
omit 'much be' change to must be
omit 'wide'  change to 'broad'

well .. in most contexts, there's very little difference
between switch and change -

you can easily go back and forth between things you switch
or change, like channels on your tv


some sentences you can't replace the word switch to change -
example -

i switch off the light
you can't write - i change the light

some sentences you can't replace the word change to switch -

they change their clothes everyday

you can't say
they switch off their clothes everyday

change mostly is referred to a 'person'
and switch mostly is referred to a 'thing'

sometimes you can replace the word switch to change -

we switch the tv channel
we change the tv channel
