Multinationals lining up for these IT graduates
CYBERJAYA: Nelson Key Tho Meng already has a job lined up when he graduates later this month.
He said spending almost six months as a researcher at a top SouthKorean university gave him the edge in finding a job with amultinational company before he had even graduated.
The 22-year-old is one of the success stories of Multimedia University (MMU) here, and its close ties with the IT industry.
Multinationals, from software giant Microsoft to telecommunicationscompanies like Nokia, are lining up to take in MMU undergraduates asinterns, and to provide educational grants.
Chia Sheng Sin, 24, got a job with Microsoft Malaysia as soon as hegraduated from MMU with a degree in software engineering in 2004.
"Thanks to MMU抯 student ambassador programme with Microsoft, I managedto ace this job with them. They knew that I could adapt to theirworking environment as I had interned with them."
Chia抯 boss, senior director Hui Kiat Bin, said: "MMU graduates arefast learners and able to adapt to our technology. And they are farmore competent than graduates from other universities."
Hui said that out of the 18 students interning with Microsoft this year, three were from MMU.
"Usually, we only take one person at a time from any one university," he added.
MMU Information Technology and Engineering graduates are much in demand.
More than 30 per cent of students are snapped up by multinationals evenbefore their final examinations, while the rest secure jobs inprestigious companies within six months of their graduation, saidMultimedia University president and chief executive Ghauth Jasmon in aninterview with the New Straits Times recently.
"One of our graduates was employed by a company in Finland as soon ashe graduated last year. Just to make sure he wouldn抰 refuse the joboffer, they flew him there free."
Twenty-four-year-old Sasi Varman, a graduate in software engineering,is now a project manager with Finnish software company TiksisTechnologies.
MMU, which celebrates its 10th anniversary on March 17, has come a longway. And its graduates are benefiting from its stellar reputation.
"We produce up to 1,800 graduates a year and have 10,000 so far.According to a recent survey, 60 per cent of those who graduated fiveyears ago were employed in multinational companies while 25 per centhad jobs in Multimedia Super Corridor-related companies."
Ghauth said companies such as Nokia, Intel, Alcatel, Microsoft, IBM,Computer Associates and Cisco had contributed more than RM60 million ineducation grants and set up labs with the latest technology, equipmentand software.
Ghauth also said that MMU has 3,100 foreign students from 80 countries |
