SHAH ALAM: Police have arrested 11 football supporters for causing disturbance at the Malaysia's World Cup qualifying Asian Zone Group A match against Saudi Arabia.
The match was halted after a group of supporters threw objects onto the pitch.
A group of fans known as Ultras Malaya allegedly launched flares and fireworks onto the pitch during the 87th minute.
When asked if the 11 arrested were part of the Ultras Malaya, Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Shafien Mamat declined to comment.
He said police would investigate how the flares and fireworks were smuggled into the Shah Alam stadium.
"Based on how we conducted checks on those entering the stadium, it is quite impossible for them to bring in the items without anyone noticing.
"Maybe the items were smuggled into the stadium earlier. We will liaise with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and Shah Alam City Hall tomorrow the matter," he explained.
ACP Shafien also addressed allegations of assault on some Saudi Arabia supporters.
"So far, we haven't received any reports of assaults on Saudi Arabia supporters. An ambassador told me that no Saudi Arabia supporters were injured," he said, adding that police would investigate the allegations.
Saudi Arabia were leading 2-1 at this point, with Malaysia's lone goal scored by Mohd Safiq Rahim in the 70th minute.
The Ultras were apparently protesting against FAM after the 10-0 mauling by the United Arab Emirates last Thursday.
