Portsmouth 2-0 Everton: Taylor hits 45-yard strike
Matt Taylor's spectacular 45-yard special followed by a perfect blast from nine-goal Nwankwo Kanu sent Portsmouth up to third in the Barclays Premiership as injury-hit Everton were left stunned by a 2-0 loss at Fratton Park.
Matthew Taylor celebrates his goal with colleague Benjani.
Taylor, who grabbed two goals in a home draw with Aston Villa last week, launched a dipping 14th-minute volley from near the halfway line despite only passing a fitness test on his back just before kick-off.
It left Everton keeper Tim Howard stumbling backwards, but he was never anywhere near stopping the ball dropping under the crossbar.
• Redknapp's joy is Taylor-made
Pompey's afternoon got even better when Kanu put his left foot to a cross from Gary O'Neil 12 minutes later and buried the ball unerringly past Howard.
Everton, who started the day just a single point behind Pompey, were outclassed by Harry Redknapp's side and, despite a determined second-half fightback, could make no inroads into their hosts' comfortable lead.
Redknapp's squad is growing smaller through injuries and he finished the game with no strikers on the pitch, winger Rodolph Douala and midfielder Niko Kranjcar replacing Kanu and Benjani Mwaruwari - with Andy Cole and Lomana Lualua both out injured until the end of the month.
Pompey needed victory to go third above Arsenal - their next opponents - after three games without a win, but they knew defeat would see Everton, who have never lost in the Premiership at Fratton Park, climb above them.
There was never much chance of that after Taylor's spectacular opener and Kanu's cracking second.
Without injured midfield stars Tim Cahill, Leon Osman and Mikel Arteta and utility man Phil Neville, the visitors were always fighting an uphill battle.
Indeed, Pompey could have been even further ahead before the break after making their intentions clear right from the start.
A linesman's narrow offside decision stopped Benjani breaking clear on Kanu's flick after only five minutes as Redknapp's men moved quickly into top gear.
Benjani and Glen Johnson both had shots blocked in quick succession as Portsmouth, without suspended midfielder Pedro Mendes, built patiently with short passes.
Everton had still not raised a meaningful attack, despite the prodigious running of #15.5 million strike duo Andrew Johnson and James Beattie, when Taylor struck his astonishing goal.
Kanu and Simon Davies went for a 50-50 ball in the centre circle and it skipped up into the air.
Although 45 yards from goal, Taylor tied his luck after spotting Howard off his line, and powered a left-foot volley over the American keeper and under the crossbar.
It was the midfielder's fourth goal of the season and was reminiscent of a similar opportunist effort against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last season.
The goal stunned both sets of fans, but Everton were nearly level six minutes later when Lee Carsley's ball found Beattie, whose flick was somehow pushed aside by a sprawling David James before eluding the lurking Johnson.
At the other end, Alan Stubbs timed his tackle perfectly to prevent Benjani turning in on goal, shoving Joleon Lescott out of the way in the process.
Kanu's strike was as perfectly despatched as Taylor's, the Nigerian volleying in O'Neil's cross even though Joseph Yobo should have cleared.
A Benjani header from a corner, Taylor's fizzing free-kick - just over - and Sean Davis's optimistic long-range lob - might have put Pompey out of sight by the interval on another day.
The second half was a tale of Pompey contentedly resisting Everton's desperate but uninspired comeback.
Toffees boss David Moyes remodelled his team with a double switch that brought on Victor Anichebe and James McFadden for Beattie and David Weir.
But Kanu could have had a penalty had he not fallen spectacularly after a collision with Howard, chasing O'Neil's flick-on into the area in the 57th minute.
At the end, James was the star man behind a an iron-clad defence, keeping out McFadden and Yobo with aplomb. Otherwise, it really was all too easy for Pompey.
Everton manager David Moyes labelled his side's performance 'rubbish' after they failed to recover from sublime volleys by Portsmouth pair Matthew Taylor and Kanu.
Taylor, who grabbed two goals in a home draw with Aston Villa last week, launched a dipping 14th-minute volley from near the halfway line. It left Everton keeper Tim Howard stumbling backwards but he was never anywhere near stopping the ball dropping under the crossbar.
Redknapp's joy is Taylor-made
Pompey's afternoon got even better when Kanu put his left foot to a cross from Gary O'Neil 12 minutes later and buried the ball unerringly past Howard.
Moyes said: 'In the first half we were rubbish. Not good at all.
'I have to give them a little bit of praise for the improvement in the second half when we made a couple of changes and had a few half-chances.
'But we didn't get a break and it is goals that change matches.'
Moyes' £15.5 million strike duo Andrew Johnson and James Beattie barely troubled the Pompey defence and Moyes said: 'I don't know why they are not scoring.
'Maybe it is to do with the service because we have a few creative players missing - Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill, Leon Osman, which is basically our midfield.
'But we don't want to talk about injuries too much. We could have got back to 1-1 when David James made a save from Beattie but we had 11 players out there and you just hope they are good enough to get a result. That didn't happen and we have to work harder.
'Pompey are strong and we knew how strongly they would start. We tried to do the same but it wasn't there today.'
Moyes was also angry over bookings for Beattie - who was replaced at half-time - and winger Andy van der Meyde.
The Scot is wondering whether he can appeal against Beattie's yellow card after claims it was Lee Carsley who fouled Sol Campbell only for referee Mark Clattenburg to show Beattie a yellow card.
Then Dutchman Van der Meyde was booked for diving in the second half - even though he seemed to have slipped after a strong tackle by Pompey hero Taylor.
Moyes said: 'I couldn't tell you what the bookings were for but I think we are entitled to ask referees what is going on.'
Pompey manager Harry Redknapp hailed the wonder-strike from 45 yards by midfielder Taylor which sparked Pompey's win.
Redknapp said: 'That was some strike. Matty is always smashing balls in training, whacking them from 50 yards and trying to hit the crossbar.
'He is certainly capable of hitting the ball a long way and he did just that today.'
Taylor hit two goals against Aston Villa last week and passed a fitness test on his back just before kick-off.
Kanu hit his ninth of the season with another superb volley in the 26th minute and Redknapp said: 'That was a great finish as well.
'He has done a great job for us and he is worth every penny I paid for him.'
Redknapp then pointed out that Kanu was a free transfer from West Brom in the summer and added: 'Everton's front two cost nearly £16million but I'm happy with what I've got - when they are all fit.
'I just concentrate on building the players up and telling them how good they are. And they have responded. Whoever I pick they give 100% every week.
'David James has been superb in goal and again today as well as our centre-halves Linvoy Primus and Sol Campbell. The way they play inspires others.'
Redknapp could be down to just one forward for next Saturday's game at Arsenal with Benjani Mwaruwari damaging a hamstring.
Pompey, who have Andy Cole and Lomana LuaLua out injured until the end of the year, finished the game with Cameroon winger Rodolph Douala leading the attack and midfielder Niko Kranjcar replacing Kanu who also felt a hamstring strain.'
