All is not lost
I think we’ll file that weekend under “could have been worse”. It was the moment United’s title rivals have all been longing for – when the Reds finally lost a Barclays Premier League game. And yet Arsenal and Chelsea both fluffed their lines.
If football had any logic to it, Arsenal would be just two points behind United right now. I remember writing down in my commentary notes as I prepared for the Wolves game on Saturday that Arsenal were now within striking distance of United. They were leading 4-0 at half-time at St James’ and it was just a case of how many more they would score.
Then, as the drama unfolded, word spread like wildfire throughout the press box at Molineux that something remarkable was happening at Newcastle. I just can’t believe Arsenal didn’t win that game. What will be the psychological impact on the Gunners? Where were the on-field leaders who should have made sure that they saw the game out? They just seemed to lose the plot completely.
And yet as much as United’s subsequent no-show against Wolves was a let-off in some ways, it actually makes it all the more frustrating because the Reds could have gone seven points clear at the top and been in a near-impregnable position.
Despite Chelsea’s mid-season collapse in form, I always felt that Carlo Ancelotti’s side were going to be United’s main rivals – until yesterday. I was encouraged at just how ordinary they were against Liverpool. It doesn’t feel quite right to celebrate a Liverpool goal but I must admit I was delighted when Raul Meireles scored. Chelsea lacked inspiration and cutting edge and Didier Drogba looks as though his nose has been put severely out of joint by the arrival of Fernando Torres. I think Chelsea now have far too much to do to catch United.
City were the only team who exploited United’s slip-up on Saturday. And, of course, they will feel they’ve still got a chance of winning the title if they can get three points at Old Trafford this weekend.
Conversely, United can all but put the Blues out of the title race if we can get a win. It will be interesting to see if Roberto Mancini can bring himself to release the shackles from his side and actually try and go for the victory. Or will it be the grindingly negative fare we saw from City at Eastlands in November?
I just wonder if United’s defeat at Molineux could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. At least I’m hoping so anyway. It will serve as a reminder that any sort of complacency in a performance can lead to a loss. It may well serve to focus minds during the run-in. And Sir Alex can use that as a motivational tool between now and May.
At such a pivotal part of the season, what a crazy time this is to play a series of meaningless international friendlies. And with United having to kick off at lunchtime on Saturday, it really doesn’t give the players much time to prepare for the derby. I never understand why qualifiers are played on a Tuesday to help the clubs out with preparation time but friendlies take place on a Wednesday. Bizarre. Here’s hoping for no injuries. |

Papers: Reds eye Celtic defender?
07/02/2011 09:21
Alan Nixon writes in The Mirror...
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has put Celtic's Honduras World Cup left back Emilio Izaguirre on his wish list. Ferguson made a personal check on the 24-year-old defender in the Old Firm Scottish Cup tie after glowing reports from his scouts. Izaguirre joined Celtic in the summer from his homeland - picking the SPL giants ahead of Wigan among others - and he has emerged as a top talent with his cavalier displays. Ferguson is looking for a new left back to compete with Patrice Evra and he could swoop for the Latin American star in the summer. United know that Evra could move on if he does not sign a long-term contract soon - with his current agreement expiring in the summer of 2012. Fergie wants an understudy for the Frenchman who could eventually replace him and plays in a similar style. Celtic would find it hard to resist any concerted move from the Old Trafford super club.
Elsewhere, Neil Moxley in The Daily Mail bemoans United's lack of a natural leader on Saturday at Wolves, a problem compounded by Rio Ferdinand's late withdrawal. He writes: "Perhaps the Scotland captain [Fletcher] has now earned the right to be the new voice of United, as Ferdinand has been far from injury-free during the past four seasons. With no-one else suitable for the role on Ferguson's bench, the United boss might have to look to Fletcher as the next role model. There were precious few other contenders on Saturday."
The Sun carry quotes from Sir Bobby Charlton, insisting Wayne Rooney can get back to his best. "He's been showing signs that he is getting back to normal," the Reds legend said. "He had a bit of an upheaval earlier in the season and that cost him a lot. But he is still a great player and will get better."
