Fuji TV's classic love dorama "101st Marriage Proposal" clearly made it on the first place, followed by the popular TBS dorama"Hana Yori Dango" and the romantic anime "Whisper of the Heart".
Broadcasted back in 1991, "101st Marriage Proposal" made the beginning of the golden age of doramas in Japan. Popular script writer Nojima Shinji wrote the script and Takeda Tetsuya (61) played the unskilled Hoshino Tatsurou trying to win the heart of the beautiful cellist Yabuki Kaoru (Asano Atsuko). One highlight of the dorama was the scene when he jumped in front of a moving truck with a do-or-die spirit and declared his love to her. A classic moment and very touching scene in dorama history. "It's a scene that made me want to fall in love like he did," a male voter commented. "The proposal felt like it was really coming from the bottom of his heart," a female described the scene.
The final episode ended with a top rating of 36.7% and it's famous line "Boku wa shinimasen!" (I won't die!) became a very popular phrase that most people still know and like to use or parody today. The fact that the dorama still has so many fans almost 20 years after it aired is amazing and reason why it made it on the first place.
SMAP's Shanghai concert faces possible cancellation
SMAP is scheduled to perform their first overseas concert at the Shanghai World Expo on June 13, but it is being reported that the Expo organizers are considering changes to the event, including canceling it altogether.
On May 30, a concert featuring popular Korean artists was held at the Expo Cultural Center. Thousands of fans who were unable to get in began acting violently, resulting in police involvement and many injuries. Due to concerns that the SMAP event could lead to similar chaos, Expo organizers are looking at possible countermeasures.
At the moment, the concert tickets will be given on a first-come-first-serve basis on the day of the event, which was the same method used for the Korean concert on May 30. The Expo is considering changing the ticket distribution to a lottery system, as well as increasing security. Another option is said to be a complete cancellation of the event, though Johnny's Jimusho says they have not heard that option being discussed at this stage.
UPDATE: Shanghai World Expo has officially announced that the event is canceled.
Sho Sakurai, Aoi Miyazaki star in "Kamisama no Karute"
Arashi's Sho Sakurai (28) is set to star in a new movie by director Yoshihiro Fukagawa, titled "Kamisama no Karute." He will for the first time be joined by actress Aoi Miyazaki (24), who plays the heroine of the story.
Sakurai has been cast as a doctor for the film, which is based on a bestselling novel published last year by an actual doctor named Sosuke Natsukawa. Ichito Kurihara (played by Sakurai) is a local physician in Nagano who meets an elderly woman with terminal cancer. His interaction with her leads to his own growth as a doctor and as a person. Miyazaki plays Sakurai's beloved wife Haruna, who works as a photographer.
The staff for the film includes the production team from the movie "Sekai no Chuushin de, Ai wo Sakebu" and screenwriter Noriko Goto, whose credits include the dramas "Blackjack ni Yoroshiku" and "Team Batista no Eikou."
"Kamisama no Karute" will be released during the second half of 2011.
Arashi are Double DVD First Week Sales Champions as "Singers" and "Actors"
With the sales of Fuji TV's "Saigo no Yakusoku" (released on the 2nd), a New Year drama special DVD starring popular group Arashi, at 126,000 copies within its first week of release, they have achieved first place in the comprehensive DVD sales for the week of 6/14. Not only it is the first time a drama-related product has broken through the 100,000 copies mark in its first week,it is also the highest first week sales ever recorded in the history of drama DVDs.
This product has sold almost three times as much as the previous first week sales record for drama DVDs of 41,000 copies, held by "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (First Season) Vol. 1" (released in January of 2009). The current accumulative sales record of 75,000 copies for domestic drama DVDs by "ROOKIES Omote BOX" (released in July of 2008) was also surpassed in one mere week.
With the addition of this record to their concert DVD, "ARASHI Anniversary Tour 5x10" (released in April), also recording the highest first week sales in the history of music DVD releases with 470,000 copies sold (accumulative sales at 682,000 copies), Arashi has become double first week sales champions in both the "music DVD category" and "drama DVD category". These results have once again shown us their tremendous popularity.
