New Report Reveals Massive Debts In La Liga A reportissued today has revealed that some of the most successful clubs inSpain are massively in debt, and are technically bankrupt...Clubs in Spain have never been shy of flashing their plastic cards overthe years but, according to a report today, most of those doing thespending have exceeded their credit limits.
The study, which comes from the University of Barcelona, was published by the newspaper La Vanguardia today, and reveals that in total, during the 2006/2007 season, La Liga clubs were in debt to the tune of €3,000,000,000.
Accordingto the report, most of that debt comes from signings, which total€1,332,100,000, and it is no surprise to see Real Madrid at the top ofthe list.
The defending La Liga champions lead the way with adebt of €527,000,000, whilst close behind them are the capital's othermajor side, Atlético Madrid, with €430,000,000.
Behind those twocome Barcelona, who have a debt of €388,000,000, and according to JoséMaría Gay de Liébana, author of the report, the only clubs who savedduring that season were Villarreal, Racing Santander, Deportivo LaCoruña and Gimnastic de Tarragona.
Speaking to the newspapertoday following the report, Liébana sounded concerned by the findingsand even admitted some clubs are techincally bankrupt.
"In general, the clubs suffer from a worrying and distinct lack of capitalisation," he mused.
"Someclubs are even in a technical situation of bankruptcy, that is to saythat their assets are lower than the existing debt and, consequently, with all their assets and investments, are not in a position to pay offtheir debts."
Liébana also acknowledged that many of the teamsin the report have now been relegated, such as Zaragoza, Gimnastic,Levante, Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad. |

Real Madrid threaten court action to allow Huntelaar and former Portsmouth star Diarra to face Liverpool
Real Madrid are ready to take UEFA to court so they can play both their January transfer window signings against Liverpool in the Champions League next month.
Rules state that a club can only register one player for the Champions League who has already played in the UEFA Cup.
The club were unaware of the legislation when they signed Lassana Diarra from Portsmouth and Klass-Jan Huntelaar from Ajax.
Having so far failed in a bid to ask UEFA to change the rules the club are preparing to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
They argue that it is unfair to allow teams who have played in the Champions League to then compete in the UEFA Cup but not let players do the reverse.
First, the case will be heard by UEFA's disciplinary body. Rob Faulkner, a spokesman for European football's governing body, said: 'The club were formally told on Monday that they could not use both players and have now asked for this hearing which they are entitled to do.'
Madrid host Liverpool at the Bernabeu on February 25 before the Champions League last 16 second leg at Anfield on March 10.
