Wenger keen on Madrid job

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted it would be "interesting" to work with Florentino Perez at Real Madrid.

Perez, who is favourite to win the elections this summer, officially presented his candidacy on Thursday, promising the Madrid fans a "spectacular project" if he succeeds.

Wenger has long been linked with a move to the Spanish giants and the Frenchman has revealed it would be a tempting offer.

"With Perez the project will be strongly interesting for every coach," he told Telefoot.

Perez has made no secret of his admiration for Wenger and tried to sign him during his first spell in charge in 2003.

Wenger has always insisted he would see out his contract at the Emirates, which runs until 2011.

"In general I always go right to the end of my contract," he added.

The Gunners boss refused to reveal whether he had spoken to Perez, saying: "Allow me to remain discreet on that matter".

Betrayed: Wenger hurt by sniping


ARSENAL were in crisis last night with Arsene Wenger left ‘hurt and betrayed’ by club sniping and Emmanuel Adebayor ready to quit.

Gunners boss Wenger has been stung by a barrage of criticism from angry shareholders.

Real Madrid are desperate to grab him and a club insider said: “This has been Arsene’s toughest season here. He is really unhappy with the comments he has had to listen to recently.

“To say he feels hurt and betrayed would be an understatement.”

Striker Adebayor last night admitted he is considering his future after fans turned on him.

He declared: “It was not nice playing at home getting booed by my own fans. I didn’t know what to do any more.”

It is Wenger, though, who has really set alarm bells ringing at the Emirates — especially as Madrid presidential candidate Florentino Perez is battling to land the disillusioned Frenchman.

Wenger admitted in a French TV interview this week he found Perez’s Real plans ‘interesting’.

Our insider added: “He was firing a warning shot to let people know how he feels. He does not feel his contribution has been fully appreciated.

“He was particularly upset by the criticism at the shareholders’ meeting. That was the final straw.”

Wenger, 59, has won seven trophies since taking charge in 1996.

And he was backed by chairman Peter Hill-Wood, who said: “Frankly some of the questions were quite disgraceful.

“There you have the most successful manager in our history and two or three of the shareholders made the most negative and somewhat hostile and sarcastic comments which were completely out of order.”

Togo star Adebayor, 25, reckons he did not deserve to be criticised for being linked to other clubs.

He added: “If JKR Kelantan , for example, wants Adebayor, it is not Adebayor’s fault. Why boo me?”
