Peony Wee, the Tanjong Katong Primary School pupil was among the first named casualties after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck at 7.15am last Friday.
With a heavy heart, mountain guide Nizam Lokong helped carry Peony Wee Ying Ping's body down Mount Kinabalu.
According to a report in The New Paper, Mr Lokong, 42, had been waiting to lead a group up the mountain when the earthquake struck.
After climbs were cancelled, he joined scores of other guides in rescue efforts in the afternoon, climbing up to Laban Rata, near the summit of Mount Kinabalu.
When he arrived at about 5pm, another guide had already found Peony's body and placed her in a body bag.
"We wanted to bring her body down quickly so she could be laid to rest as soon as possible," Mr Lokong told The New Paper in an interview outside the Mount Kinabalu Guides And Porters Centre.
He added that they did not want to leave her there in case more rocks fell during the aftershocks. The guides then placed the body on a strectcher and 10 of them, including Mr Lokong, took turns to carry her down the hiking trail.
There were at least four people carrying the stretcher at a time as they made their way down to Timpohon Gate, about 6km away.
Mr Lokong said:
"The body wasn't heavy but we had to make sure she didn't fall off or hit anything.
"The ground was rocked by aftershocks as we made our way through the jungle."
Night had started to fall about an hour into their journey. It was making it difficult to see where they were going.
Mr Lokong who has children of his own said:
"As I carried the body down, my heart was feeling great pain that a young life had been lost.
"It was not just a body I was carrying down. She was someone's child."
They finally reached the foothills of Mount Kinabalu at 10pm, descending nearly 1.5km on the way.
Peony's body arrived at Jalan Tiga in Mountbatten at around 7.30pm on Sunday.
The 12-year-old pupil who perished with seven others when the earthquake struck has been described as 'lively' and 'cheerful' by family members and friends.

Mountain guide Mhd Rizuan Kauhinin hopes to meet the boy he rescued after the earthquake on Mount Kinabalu.
“I just want to know how he is doing,” said the 25-year-old who had been busy with the search-and-rescue operations till yesterday morning.
“I don’t remember what he looks like, but I want to know that he’s safe,” he added.
The camera-shy guide said he was unaware that a photo of him carrying the injured boy on his back had become the iconic symbol of the mountain guides’ heroism on social media.
The image even inspired a painting by artist Razie Alfiedan, who has put it up for sale for charity.
When shown a thumbnail of the painting, Rizuan was more impressed with Razie’s artistry than with his newfound fame.
The Dusun native from Kampung Lembah Permai at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu told The Star that he “did not know what to feel” about being called a hero for rescuing the quake victim.
“I’m not a famous person. What I did was out of sincerity, not to get fame. I really wanted to help. All that mattered was to bring the boy to safety,” he said.
The boy’s mother, using the name “Sabrena El Huda” on a Facebook page, had identified him as her son without naming him. “Thts my son from TKP ... he is currently receiving treatment for his injuries ... please continue to pray for the team... can nvr thk the Sabahan rangers enough for his rescue efforts,” she wrote.
Rizuan said he and another guide had found the boy writhing in pain near the Villosa Shelter around KM4.4 of the trail.
“The boy couldn’t move as he had injured his back. We gave him something to eat. I also shared some water with him.
“We then lifted him, and I carried him on my back,” he recounted.
“Since he is Singaporean, he knows how to speak Bahasa Malaysia. He told me not to move fast because the impact was hurting him. Normally, it would take me only two hours to travel between the two points. But I took my time bringing him down.
“The boy kept saying he was in pain, and he couldn’t stand it. We had to stop many times, but I tried my best to quickly bring him to the Layang-Layang Hut.
“At the Layang-Layang Hut, we transferred the boy onto a stretcher.”
At Timpohon Gate at the mountain base, the boy was taken away in an ambulance.
Rizuan, a mountain guide for five years, said it was his duty to help those in trouble.
Asked how the temporary closure of the park would affect him, Rizuan said he would have to consider looking for other jobs to make ends meet.
“Some of us have been doing this most our lives – we don’t know how else to make a living. Hopefully, help will come to us,” he said.

Tanjong Katong Primary School (TKPS) pupil Chantal Phuay was safe in her hotel room near the base of Mount Kinabalu last Friday when she heard a child's body had been found on the mountain.
"I expected it to be one of my friends," said the 12-year-old - who was given the tragic news about her schoolmate Peony Wee Ying Ping. Hours earlier, Chantal narrowly escaped death when the earthquake sent rocks and boulders tumbling onto climbers.
The school prefect was part of a group of 29 TKPS pupils on a trip to the mountain.
Six of her peers, a teacher and an adventure guide who accompanied them died, while another pupil and teacher are still missing.
The pupils were split into five groups to climb a route of fixed cables, ladders and bridges. Chan- tal's group was waiting to set off when the earth began shaking.
Recounting her experience yesterday, she said: "Rocks fell. Everyone started gathering. Then a rock or tree fell on us and everything went pitch black. Maybe I fainted, I have no idea."
When she regained consciousness, she followed her teacher's instructions to move down the mountain but the trail was blocked by fallen trees and rocks.
"My legs were wobbly. I just thought, 'I need to get down'. I was just worried if I would see my parents another time."
Well-wishes, messages stream in at site set up at Tanjong Katong Primary School
It took three hours to reach the base. At the hotel, the teachers and pupils did a headcount. "We already knew who were missing. I felt guilty that I didn't help out and I just followed my teachers' commands," she said.
Chantal returned home on Saturday. But her thoughts remain with her friends who did not make it back. Among the dead were Peony, Sonia Jhala and Ameer Ryyan Mohd Adeed Sanjay, all 12.
"Peony always made people laugh and teased me. Ameer Ryyan helped me when I was climbing up the mountain," she said. "Sonia, even when she was shivering with cold, she continued to make jokes so that we would stop thinking about the weather."
Yesterday, four boys from the United World College of South East Asia who also escaped death on the mountain visited a tribute site at TKPS to pay their respects.

Dengar cerita;
