We know now that Navdeep and Ghazi are at peace. I talked with their families yesterday, and it was so clear that Ghazi and Navdeep have inspired so much love and brought so much joy to those around them. We all grieve with their families. Our officers are staying by them to support them in every way. Please, let us respect their need for privacy at this time. I have asked my team to extend the hours of our tribute site at Tanjong Katong Primary School for us to express our condolences - it will be 10am to 9pm today and tomorrow. We will pass your words and tributes to the families when they are ready to receive them. Your support and respect for their privacy will bring comfort to them and help them through this difficult time. We are in this together. Education Minister Singapore Mr Heng in his facebook post

Please let me share with you a message I sent to all our teachers and schools and MOE staff today…

Dear colleagues,

We are deeply grieved by the deaths of our fellow Singaporeans – our students and teacher from Tanjong Katong Primary School, and an adventure guide who was with them in Kota Kinabalu. As of early this morning, students Peony, Ryyan, Emilie, Karyl, Rachel and Sonia, and teacher Terrence have all been brought home to us. We continue to search for and hope for the safe return of our teacher Ghazi and student Navdeep. All of us feel the anguish of the families.

Caroline, Principal of Tanjong Katong Primary School, and her team, are closest to the students and teachers. They feel the pain of the community most deeply, and we can all give them our utmost support. The TKPS team have rallied together to be a source of strength and support for the survivors, and for the loved ones of those who have passed on or are still missing. They do so even as they struggle with their own grief. Many MOE officers are also working hard on the ground to help the families affected. I would like the MOE family to know that Indranee, Ann, Hawazi, and I are fully with you in this difficult time.

We do not go through this alone. Our colleagues across the whole Public Service are walking with us through this hard time. Officers from SCDF, SPF, MFA, MOT, MOH, MSF, MINDEF and SAF are giving their all to support the next-of-kin and victims. Our colleagues are resolute, and they have put the children and the families first in everything they do. I want to thank the whole of the Public Service for coming together in this way.

PM has declared that today will be a Day of National Remembrance, a day for us to remember those we have lost, and also those who survive. I ask that we, the MOE family, use this day to remember and honour the selflessness of our teachers, the spirit of our students, and the support of our community and friends.

All the teachers of TKPS who were on the trip gave their best to watch over our children, and they deserve our greatest respect and gratitude. Our students tell of their teachers shielding them from falling rocks, and continuing to look after them despite their own injuries. Let us remember and live up to their selflessness and courage.

We must also honour our children by remembering that they have been brave, rugged and tenacious, striving to bring out their personal bests, and excited about heading ever forward together with their schoolmates. Let us remember and draw hope from our children’s spirit to be the best they can be.

It is not just the staff of TKPS who have rallied, but also their alumni and the community around the school, who step forward to show all of us what it means to care for our fellow Singaporeans. Teachers and staff from other schools have also drawn closer to lend their strength. Let us remember and be grateful for this community of support.

Let us also remember our friends in Sabah who suffer the lasting effects of this earthquake. The Malaysian authorities have been helpful and supportive. We keep them in our thoughts for the lives they have tragically lost.

The selflessness of our teachers reminds us to give our best to our students. The spirit of our children inspires us to be teachers. The support of our community and friends helps us go on when we face difficulties. I hope we remember these today and forever, so that we may live up to our fellow teachers, our students, and our community. Let us keep up our strength and spirit in this time of grief. Let us stand together to support and care for our students, our community, and one another.

Cops: S'poreans missing after quake have died

1  3  0

Sabah police today confirmed that two Singaporeans missing on Mount Kinabalu after last Friday's earthquake in Sabah have died.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the body parts of Navdeep Singh Jayrol s/o Raj Kumar, 13, and Mohamad Ghazi Mohammed, 35, had been identified by the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) teams from Malaysia and Singapore.

Their remains would be handed over to the families once the DNA tests had been completed, he told a news conference at the Sabah Police headquarters in Kota Kinabalu.

“The families have sent over blood and tissue samples which we have sent to the Chemistry Department for verification,” he said.

Altogether, 18 people, 15 mountain climbers and three guides, were killed when the 5.9-magnitude earthquake rocked the Ranau and Kundasang areas at 7.15am last Friday and sent rocks and boulders crashing down Mount Kinabalu, South-East Asia’s highest peak at 4,101 metres.

Ten of the dead were Singaporeans; six, Malaysians; one, Japanese and one, Chinese. They were at various stages of climbing Mount Kinabalu when the earthquake struck.

Jalaluddin said 14 of the bodies had been identified and handed over to the next-of-kin.

“The post mortem of the bodies of the Japanese and Chinese will be done after the families arrive here, most probably today,” he said.

The dead Singaporeans comprised three teachers and seven pupils from the Tanjong Katong Primary School. They were on an excursion up the mountain.

In SINGAPORE, the Ministry of Education, in a statement, expressed its deep appreciation to the Malaysian police, armed forces, other authorities and the many individuals for their support, assistance and contribution to the search and rescue and recovery efforts “of our students and teachers”.

“We will continue to provide support to the families during this difficult time,” the ministry said.

Dua mangsa gempa bumi warga Singapura ditemui

10/06/2015 12:01pm

- Bernama

KUNDASANG: “I will never leave Mount Kinabalu and will continue climbing,” said Ridwan Kohinin, 25, one of the mountain guides who rescued climbers in the earthquake on Friday.

Ridwan was one of the guides who helped save wounded climbers and whose photograph carrying an injured Singaporean student went viral on social media.

A resident of Kampung Lembah Permai in Kundasang, Ridwan said he had been a mountain guide since he was 18 and the job was already a part of him.

“I grew up at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu and have worked as a mountain guide. I will continue being a mountain guide for as long as I can,” he told Bernama after a lunch with Prime Minister Najib Razak at the Kinabalu Park here yesterday.

Ridwan said he was involved in the operations to carry the bodies of the dead climbers.

He said it was only today that he recovered, could sleep well and mingle with people.

“Three days after the earthquake, it was still difficult for me to talk about how I felt,” he said.

During the tragedy, Ridwan was among the mountain guides who were at the peak of Mount Kinabalu and climbing in the Laban Rata area with several groups of climbers.

He said he was with other mountain guides trying to bring down the climbers who were injured in the earthquake.

“I was responsible for bringing down a boy who was injured from Pondok Layang-Layang before I met the group of rescuers at Pondok Pelusa.

“Despite the challenges and difficulties climbing down, I am thankful I was able to bring the injured boy down,” he said.

Ridwan said he received a call from the boy’s father in Singapore expressing his thanks.

Ridwan added that he appreciated Najib’s visit and that he himself handed the aid to them, especially to family members of the mountain guides who died.

“We are grateful for the appreciation given by the federal and state governments to the Kinabalu mountain guides,” said Ridwan.
