Kanjiya, Kaname co-star in detective comedy
Tue, February 19, 2008 (5:12pm EST)
Actress Shihori Kanjiya, who currently stars in NHK's morning drama "Chiritotechin," has been chosen for another starring role next season. She will appear in a TV Asahi mystery/comedy series, tentatively titled "Kimi Hannin Janai yo ne?"
"Chiritotechin" started filming last June and its final episode is scheduled to finish shooting on the 22nd of this month. Kanjiya will have little time to rest before she starts filming for the TV Asahi series in mid-March.
The drama features Kanjiya as Sakura Morita, a peculiar "freeter" (freelance part-timer) who dreams of becoming a mystery novel writer. While switching between various jobs throughout the series, she also becomes an assistant to Officer Utagawa (Jun Kaname), a detective who discovers her excellent memory and reasoning skills. On the other hand, Utagawa (who has just joined the police ranks through his father's connections) is fairly inept and has a tendency to fall in love with female suspects.
"Kimi Hannin Janai yo ne?" premieres in April and will occupy TV Asahi's Friday 11:15pm time slot, which has previously been the home of successful mystery series such as "Jikou Keisatsu" and "Trick."

news: comedian
As one half of the Yoshimoto duo Football Hour, comedian Iwao Nozomu (32) may be popular but he's not supposed to get the girl. As the comedy agency's No.1 "ugly" star for three years running, his romantic misadventures are part of his appeal and marketability. So his connection with a popular 24-year-old porn actress is all the more surprising. The weekly gossip magazine "Flash" photographed Iwao and Itoya Mei on a date at a Tokyo izakaya earlier this month, after which they spent the night at Iwao's apartment. They have been spotted out together on several separate occasions, though their agencies say they are just friends. They met last year when Iwao cast Itoya in the segment he directed of a Yoshimoto omnibus movie. A junior college graduate, Itoya worked in a nursery before starting nude modeling and porn video appearances in 2006. She also has one of the AV (adult video) industry's most popular blogs.

"Kurobe no Taiyou" being adapted to stage
Wed, February 20, 2008 (5:43am EST)
"Kurobe no Taiyou," a 1968 film directed by Kei Kumai that starred Yujiro Ishihara and Toshiro Mifune, is being adapted as a stage play. The movie has not been seen by the public in 40 years, as Ishihara requested that it never be broadcast on television or released on video or DVD.
The original movie was one of the biggest successes of its time. The story recounted the construction of the largest dam in Japan, the Kurobe dam in the Toyama Prefecture. The movie's climax was a flood scene which resulted in Ishihara fracturing a thumb during filming. For the stage version, a 20,000-liter water tank is being prepared to reenact the scene.
Shido Nakamura is replacing Ishihara as the star in the production, which will be the first play handled by film director Kiyoshi Sasabe. Mifune's successor has not yet been cast.
The play will open at the Umeda Arts Theater in Osaka on October 5.
