Benitez hails Liverpool comeback as start of Red revolution

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez believes his side's astonishing comeback to win 4-2 at Fulham could be the harbinger of brighter days for the Reds after a mixed start to his reign at Anfield.
The visitors found themselves two goals down at the interval following a double from Luis Boa Morte but the half-time introduction of Xabi Alonso proved to be crucial.
An own goal from Zat Knight halved the deficit before Milan Baros and Alonso put Liverpool in front and Igor Biscan wrapped it up in stoppage time.

Benitez said: "In my opinion we were playing well even in the first half and dominating the game. We lost two bad goals but I thought we were in control.
"I told my players at half-time they would have to play well but they were not out of it. I said if they could get a goal quickly then anything was possible and that's how it was.
"I think our first goal came at a good time but this is our first away win in the league and I think it will prove to be very important.
"We've been playing well at home and getting good results but it was important that we started to do it away and start winning some games."
Explaining his surprise decision to leave Alonso on the bench, Benitez said: "Sometimes when players go off with their national team, they need time when they come back.
"Xabi only had one day of training back with us whereas Dietmar Hamann and Salif Diao had been there all week.
"It was also important for Xabi to get some rest as we have important games coming up starting in the Champions League (against Deportivo La Coruna) on Tuesday.
"It's important to have good players with the right mentality and Alonso showed that today.
"I've been involved in games like that before when things have turned round completely but not many and I can't remember any of them at the moment."
Fulham manager Chris Coleman felt his team had not shown enough character to hang in there after Liverpool got back into the game.
He said: "We had a bit of bad luck with a couple of the goals but I felt our heads dropped too easily.
"But we've lacked consistency all season and that was the case again. We can't feel sorry for ourselves or look for excuses.
"I've no idea where the panic came from because we hadn't looked in any danger in the first half. Their first goal was crucial as was the introduction of Alonso -- that lad can pass a ball and he was hurting us.
With the game level at 2-2 Liverpool defender Josemi was sent off for a second yellow card yet Coleman felt it had given the visitors a boost rather than his own team.
He added: "The man went off and I was thinking here we go but it seemed to give them a lift rather than us. We needed to stick at it but we didn't.
"Now my players need to start realising where we are and that's at the wrong end of the table. We need to get back to playing how we were last season.
"We need to make ourselves hard to beat again and grind out some results. At the moment were conceding too many silly and soft goals." |
