Family to cremate Soosalu’s body in Malaysia
PETALING JAYA, July 15 — Model Regina Soosalu will be cremated in Malaysia and not her homeland Estonia because of her family’s financial difficulties.
Her brother, Silver, confirmed with Malay Mail the family will cremate her body here after receiving the green light from Malaysian authorities to claim her remains.
“We won’t be flying her remains back as it’s really expensive and we are still struggling to raise money to fly to Malaysia and attend to the other necessities,” he said.
Estonian honorary consul to Malaysia Col (Rtd) Datuk Harbans Singh was reported as saying a foreign airline had quoted RM120,000 to fly her body home and he had advised the family to cremate her body in Malaysia.
One of Soosalu’s close friends told Malay Mail yesterday a fund-raising drive initiated by Soosalu’s friends and well-wishers would not cover a quarter of the amount quoted to fly her remains home.
Soosalu’s family has asked two of her former managers to channel all of her pending payments to them to help finance their trip to Malaysia.
Silver also urged all freelance agencies and event companies that Soosalu had worked for to contact their family.
He said his family did not know most of the companies Soosalu had worked for as she had mostly been freelancing.
Soosalu’s death remains a mystery. Her body was found on July 1 on Rawa Island where she spent most of her time with her boyfriend, Tunku Alang Reza Tunku Ibrahim.
Police initially investigated her death as drowning but reclassified the case as murder when they found scratches and bruises on her body.
Her boyfriend and one of his friends were picked up and are remanded until Thursday.
Before that, a bartender, two boatmen, a resort manager and a friend of Tunku Alang who was on the island during the incident were detained.
Two of the seven arrested were released over the weekend after police had questioned them. It was learnt that they were the boatmen.
Soosalu’s family is only expected to be arriving after Thursday to claim her body as police would need her remains for another week to assist investigations.
Johor CID chief SAC Datuk Hashnan Hassan said police had obtained several leads in the case.
Hashnan said police were waiting for the toxicology report to determine if Soosalu was under the influence of drugs before her death.
“I’m not sure how long the toxicology report will take but we are giving space to the relevant department to do their job,” he said.
Soosalu and Tunku Alang were detained for a drug case in January and were allegedly found in possession of ganja. The case was brought to court on May 21but the couple were released on court bail.
It was not the first time that Rawa Island had been in the news.
On May 9, 2012, four Singapore-based expatriates alleged that they were attacked by bodyguards of the Johor royal family on the island.
In 2005, it was reported that a group of six men, including a Johor prince, gatecrashed a Brazilian couple’s wedding on the island and attacked guests with golf clubs and sharp objects.
Police detained four men, including the prince, then in his 20s, but freed them on bail days later.
The privately-owned island is 16km off the east coast of the peninsula and is an hour’s boat ride from Mersing. It is home to two resorts — Le Club and The Safari.

..biar betul, mana ada sampai 100K kos bawak mayat ke Europe, dia macam tambang kelas ekonomi aje, paling banyak pun 30K....
