Leon Lai News Today ~ 03/11/2004

Leon is currently filming the movie, "The Seven Swords" in Mainland China, and did not have time to shoot the cover for his new Mandarin album, which is to be released today. Therefore, the photos from the Cantonese "Dawn" were used and the Mandarin songs will be the same as the Cantonese ones, except that they are replaced by Mandarin lyrics. As fans from China, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia hoped to be able to listen to Leon's new songs, even though Leon was busy with filming, he also took time off to return to Hong Kong to record the songs. The first plug of the Mandarin album is "Painless loss of love", which is the Mandarin version of the Cantonese song "Cannot be a lifetime".

Leon Lai News Today ~ 09/11/2004

Leon flew back to Hong Kong the night before to attend "Jade Solid Gold". He said that he would return to Tianshan to film "The Seven Swords" after handling some personal matters yesterday. He had just released a Mandarin album for the Mainland, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia markets. He said that since he had just released a Cantonese album not long ago and the market for Mandarin albums in Hong Kong is not very big, he would not do much promotion.

Recently, Alan Tam, gave the title of the "New Four Heavenly Kings" to Hacken Lee, Andy Hui, Leo Ku and Edmond Leung. As one of the four heavenly kings, Leon said that he had been flying here and there, he did not know about the emergence of "New Four Heavenly Kings", and he had no opinion. He felt that it was not extraordinary for every singer to have a title. Those who were lucky would get nicer names, those who were unlucky would get weird names. Actually these titles are just names, there is no special meaning. As long as the singer gives his best and contributes to the music industry, he is a good singer.

On the other hand, according to Korea news, Leon would be one of the participating singers in the "1st Asia Song Festival" held in Seoul on 26 November. Other singers from other countries include Ayumi Hamasaki, BoA, Sun Nan, F4, etc.

Leon Lai News Today ~ 18/11/2004

Leon recently shot a new series of commercials for the new 3G video mobile phones launched by 3 Hong Kong, Hutchison Telecom. Yesterday, a grand press conference was held and it attracted over a hundred reporters. At the press conference, Leon used the latest 3G video mobile phone to communicate with the compere, and the full one minute version of the commercial, "Raining Day" was shown. In this commercial, besides being drenched in rain with the leading lady, Aamber, Leon also had to be slapped by her. Nevertheless, in the end he received a hug from Aamber. In the past, whenever Leon filmed commercials for Hutchison, there would always be a memorable line left in people's mind. In this new commercial, Leon's "Words are not to be said casually. If I say it, I'll definitely do it." will probably raise another trend in the city.

Leon said that he had cooperated with Hutchison for 12 years. Asked whether he received a pay rise this time, he said that both of them worked very happily with each other, money is not the most important thing. As for the many sets of 3G video mobile phones given to him, he had used all of them. He said, many people were afraid of losing their privacy in using video mobile phone, but he felt that technology would keep on advancing and in the future, non-video mobile phones would be obsolete. If his girlfriend requested, would he give a video mobile phone to her? He said, if she wanted it, he would give. Asked whether he would be afraid of being bugged by his girlfriend in always wanting to use the video mobile phone to talk to him? He smiled and said, if I found it annoying I would tell her not to "see", feelings cannot be forced, but if two persons are in a relationship, of course both of them would want to use video to communicate.

About being slapped by Aamber in the commercial, Leon said that he was slapped for about 6 to 9 times. Asked whether he was being hit by Aamber when she threw herself on him? He smiled and said, Aamber was rather tall, during filming everyone was afraid that he could not withstand her weight, so they found a shorter assistant director to practise first. After being successful, then Aamber did it herself. He said that Aamber had auditioned for "Leaving Me Loving You" before. At that time, they could not cooperate, now they had a chance to cooperate.

On the other hand, Leon's golden quote in this commercial is "Words are not to be said casually. If I say it, I'll definitely do it." And did Leon do it? He said that he had done it all, although sometimes he felt very tormented. He felt that words should not be said casually, once you have said it, you should do it. As for whether he had ever broken a promise to a girl, Leon said that useless news do not have to be mentioned, in case others say he is creating news.

Leon Lai News Today ! 21/11/2004

Leon attended "McDonald's World Children's Day" at Victoria Park yesterday as Unicef ambassador and witnessed 2007 young people complete a new Guinness world record in skipping. Leon explained that he did not participate in the skipping as he had a slight headache. Otherwise, it is not a problem for him to skip for 4 to 5 minutes. This year is the second time Leon witnessed a new Guinness world record. He felt that the event is very meaningful, besides raising funds to help the needy children and encouraging people to do more exercises, it also helps Hong Kong to break a new record.

Later, he would go to South Korea to attend the 1st Asia Song Festival. Asked whether he would visit Shu Qi at the filming set of "Seoul Raiders" on the way, he said, "No, there's no time. Even if there's time, I'll meet my Korean friends for a meal. (It was reported that Shu Qi had signed with East Asia Music?) Who said it? I don't know, East Asia has many departments, it may not be my side, I only know that Hannah is in my group."

Asked whether he would sing a duet with Shu Qi since they are in the same company? He replied quickly, "If it's right then I'll do it. Many people are in the same company but do not sing duets together, like Kelly Chen's first duet is with Andy Lau and Joey Yung sang with Hacken Lee." Shu Qi only started singing now, would he give comments to her as a friend? He said, "Firstly, the person did not ask me. Secondly, I don't know about this matter. Thirdly, I respect the media, so I answered your questions even though I have zero knowledge. In short, in my data, this person do not exist and I don't have the free time to mind such things!"

On the other hand, Leon also attended a carnival held by the Hong Kong Police and Community Chest yesterday, where he sang a duet with the Deputy Commissioner, Tang King Shing.

Leon Lai News 24-11-2004

Although Tsui Hark's "Seven Swords" is still filming in progress, its overseas distribution rights are already sold for over a hundred million. Over 13 countries fought for its rights and everyone is full of confidence and expectations for the screening of the movie.

Recently in the American Films Market, "Seven Swords" was one of the movies with the most attention on it. The foreign film distributors were especially interested in China traditional martial arts movies, besides, China pugilistic movies are currently the hottest trend overseas, and therefore "Seven Swords" was what the film distributors desired. In addition, Tsui Hark is highly-acclaimed among the foreign distributors. Thus, during the exhibition, over hundreds of buyers had made enquiries. The 13 countries who had bought the rights of the film includes France, Italy, Eastern Europe, Thailand and Indonesia etc. The buyers from England and Germany even bidded against each other and offered very high prices for the rights of "Seven Swords".

The production fees of "Seven Swords" was HK$140 million, and just by selling its overseas distribution rights, it had almost break-even. The film company is intending to hold a grand end-of-filming banquet for encouragement. At the exhibition, besides printing genuine leather film booklets, the film company also prepared many souvenirs full of Chinese characteristics. These souvenirs were in very high demand and were very quickly distributed away.

The story of "Seven Swords" is adapted from Liang Yu Sheng's work, with settings in the 1600s when the Manchurians entered China. In the movie, all the actors have brooding images to bring out the downs and outs of pugilistic life. People with good looks like Leon Lai and Charlie Yeung became dispirited swordsmen under the hands of Tsui Hark, to exhibit another side of their charm. Tsui Hark had led the filming crew to Urumqi, Tianshan, Shan Shan, and various locations in Xinjiang for filming. 30 million were spent to build a big filming location, including the "Wu Zhuang" which took up an area of 4 soccer fields, and took hundreds of workers to build in more than 2 months.

News 6-12-2004

Leon attended a concert held in the Guangzhou stadium the night before. As the stadium was quite far from town and in order to take the last bus at 10pm, some of the audience left the concert early. Nevertheless, when Leon gave the closing performance with the song "A Promise", all the audience stood up and sang with him, and clapped to the beat with the sticks in their hands.

Leon was currently busy with the filming work of Tsui Hark's "Seven Swords". He had rushed to Guangzhou for the concert from Urumqi the night before. As the temperature in Urumqi was very low and the grounds had frozen, he had been worried that the plane could not fly, but luckily he managed to attend the concert successfully. Asked about his feelings about Andy Lau winning the Golden Horse best actor award, he said, "Actually all the artistes would be very happy about his winning. (Is your target to win the Golden Horse best actor again?) It's too rushed. The most important thing now is to do my best for 'Seven Swords' first." About the decease of James Wong and Siu Sang, both whom Leon had cooperated with before, he said, "Although this is a very sad thing, the reason Uncle James did not arrange for people to take a last look at him is that he didn't want us to be sad. I would miss him forever. For Siu Sang, when a person reaches a certain age, he has to go to another stage. You have to accept it."

Leon Lai News 12 Dec 2004

Yesterday was Leon's 38th birthday. The night before, he held a BBQ birthday party at the open space garden outside his company's office at Kowloon Tong. A group of good friends, including Carina Lau, Anthony Wong, Chapman To, and director Mabel Cheung and husband attended the party. Mark Lui even brought his new girlfriend Jade there, and the boss Peter Lam also attended the event.

While Leon and friends were having fun inside, the situation outside was also very lively. About more than 180 fans surrounded Leon's office to wait for him. Although they were not able to go inside, they waited very patiently outside to step into Leon's 38th year together with him.

When it was not yet the cake-cutting time, Carina Lau was already leaving around 11pm, the birthday boy personally sent her to the door and gave her a goodbye kiss. When it was near to 12 midnight, in order not to let the fans wait in vain, Leon opened the middle gate and let them see the cake-cutting moment. In the end, the over 100 fans and Leon's good friends sang out the Chinese and English versions of the birthday song together, and Leon made his birthday wish for himself and all his friends to be healthy.

At the arrangement of Leon's assistant, the fans were allowed to go inside in groups of 20 to give presents to Leon and take photographs. Many fans gave Leon red packets. Leon also did not forget to order to waiters to distribute the cakes and drinks to the fans and reporters outside. The night, Leon received a remote-controlled car from his old record company Sony and digital camera from friends etc.

As for Mark Lui who had put on weight recently, while he was leaving with his girlfriend, the fans shouted to him to slim down, and made him did not know whether to laugh or cry. The rest partied till 1am plus and after the party, the birthday boy left the company for home.

Leon Lai News Today ~ 21/12/2004

The current year Miss Hong Kong, Kate Tsui Tsz Shan conducted an artiste interview for the first time and the interviewee is Leon. The interview will be shown on Jade Starbiz from tonight and Leon brought along Wyman, the lyricist for his new CD to appear in the interview.

Leon is often said to be "touring the garden" when he talks, and because he often gives philosophical answers, the interviewer often does not understand and it is also difficult for the audience to understand. In the interview, Kate Tsui asked about this and Leon explained that it is because for every sentence he speaks, there is always a picture first. About selecting carefully the leading ladies in the music videos he filmed, Wyman hinted that Leon liked ladies with long hair. Regarding this, Leon did not admit directly nor deny, but said that he was most afraid of women going to balls, who made their hair into a very high bun, wore low V and revealed their backs. Leon stressed that he is not a person with very high expectations about what he wears. All his clothes are bought by his manager or his assistant, and the clothes he bought himself are often left in the cupboard and forgotten.

24-12-2004 News

Leon went to various radio stations for promotion of his album yesterday, and one of which was Sheila Chin Shuk Lan's program. On knowing Leon was coming, Sheila especially put on make-up and was teased by her partner DJ. Leon immediately helped his friend Sheila by saying that putting on make-up is a form of respect.

As the boss of a record company, Leon was asked about how to save the bad market in the music industry. Leon said that he does not like to be called boss, he only wanted to do his part, film a good movie and release a good album. He also does not like to be a boss, and also does not like others asking him when he would get married. Although his parents had divorced when he was young, it did not make him not believe in marriage, but he really never had planned for marriage.

Leon said that previously when he went back to Mainland to visit his mother, his grandmother, carrying a grandchild, also asked him when he would give her a grandchild. He said very honestly to his grandmother that the times are different now, although having a grandchild is a happy thing to the elders, but to him, it is a very big pressure. Leon said that although he is an artiste, marriage is a personal matter and he does not want it to become a public marriage.

Leon attended a charity event yesterday where he read out the Christmas wishes of some Hongkongers. Among them, the wish of the mother of a 10-year-old girl was the most touching, she hoped that her daughter would recover from bone cancer soon and return to school next year. The organiser arranged this little girl and her father to attend the event and share the good news that the little girl is recovering gradually. As the little girl's idol is Leon, therefore she felt very happy to be able to see her idol. Leon also gave a computer to the little girl, and suggested the telecom company give a 3G mobile phone to the little girl. Leon hoped that the little girl win this war and everyone would give her support. As long as she lived healthily and happily, that would be the best gift for everyone next year.

Asked whether Leon had only suggested the telecom company to give a mobile phone at the last minute? Leon admitted it was a spur of the moment, but he believed that the other party would not break the promise. This was the first time he saw the little girl and after a year of chemotherapy, the little girl was gradually recovering. As for the computer, it was sponsored, he was only "borrowing flowers to pay respects to the Buddha", and it could be considered the only Christmas present he had given out. Leon said that even his colleagues did not get presents from him because he did not have the time to buy at all. He had hoped to choose some presents for them when he went overseas, but he had just been going to Urumqi, and he believed that the sheep leather, horns and other products there do not suit their taste. Then would he give cash? He said, "Don't be so realistic, If I have to give cash, I rather give gold or diamond, at least its value can increase. Still, they are not as valuable as my heart, so I'll give my heart to them!"

As for Leon's Christmas wish, he hoped that Hong Kong would be better, everyone be less selfish and shares more, so that the society would be more harmonious, and everyone has a part to do his part well.
