Christmas Shopping: Who Should Arsenal Buy?
Goalkeeper
When compared to their rivals, the Gunners are lacking here. Manuel Almunia was never a superstar, but nowadays he’s hardly even solid between the sticks. And while Lukasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone have the talent, they most definitely lack the experience required of a Premier League No.1.
Scott Loach of Watford is the only name of note that has cropped up in connection with Arsenal in recent months; however, at 21 years of age, with no top-flight experience, he can hardly be considered an immediate improvement on the options already available.
As this is an area where Wenger should look to improve immediately, he may have to tread on some of his rivals’ toes to get what he needs. Schalke’s Manuel Neuer and CSKA Moscow’s Igor Akinfeev have both been linked to Manchester United, and both are tempting prospects with plenty of time on their side.
However, in the here and now, Akinfeev stands out. He may be only 23, like Neuer, but his European and international experience – which includes 39 caps for Russia – sets him apart.
Defence
The goalkeeping issue has made Arsenal’s back four look susceptible at times, but in truth it would be very harsh to lay blame upon of any of the regular starters. The question here is one of depth, especially in the centre; for while William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen have been individually impressive, a taller, more muscular alternative is still needed.
In rubbishing rumours that Sol Campbell could return as a free agent, Wenger said that there would be no additions at centre-half this winter – unless one of his current crop left. Still, even if any of Johann Djourou, Philippe Senderos and Mikael Silvestre do shove off, it’s unlikely that even solid candidates like West Ham United’s Matthew Upson will figure in the gaffer’s reckoning.
Press reports insist that Ajax full-back Gregory van der Wiel has reportedly captured the interest of ‘The Professor’, though, amid whispers that either Bacary Sagna or Emmanuel Eboue could be on the way out:@.
Sacrificing Eboue for Van der Wiel is perhaps justifiable. However, the Ivorian utility has matured markedly since he was nearly run out of the club by the fans last season, so replacing him mid-term with an untried youngster seems an unnecessary risk.
Midfield
There is one key element missing from Arsenal’s midfield: steel. Alexandre Song and Abou Diaby certainly haven’t embarrassed themselves playing alongside Cesc Fabregas, but there is still room for an experienced head and a strong foot in the middle of the park.
Inter want-away Patrick Vieira has been linked on and off with a return to the club he used to captain, along with Yaya Toure – even though the Barcelona star’s brother, Kolo, now plays at Manchester City. Further forward, Real Madrid’s Rafael van der Vaart joins a youthful list that includes CSKA Moscow wonderkid Milos Krasic, Sevilla starlet Diego Perotti, Crystal Palace prospect Victor Moses, Lille winger Eden Hazard and Nice gun Loic Remy.
It mind sound crazy to some, but Vieira wouldn’t be a bad buy. Sure, he’s not the player he was when he left for Juventus in 2005, but he knows Arsenal and the Premier League inside out and could play a vital role as he looks to boost his claim for a place in France’s World Cup squad. Besides, he’s in the last year of his Inter contract and would be cheap as chips.
Attack
Wenger’s knack for a missing a trick in the transfer market was highlighted last summer when he sold Emmanuel Adebayor and didn’t bother to sign a replacement. Now that Robin van Persie is facing months out injured, the Arsenal attack looks rather light with the pint-sized Andrey Arshavin lining up as a lone centre-forward.
There is no shortage of targets in this category, as Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh, Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko, Milan’s Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Toulouse’s Andre-Pierre Gignac, Sampdoria’s Giampaolo Pazzini, Real Madrid’s Ruud van Nistelrooy and Tottenham Hotspur’s Roman Pavlyuchenko have all come up in the transfer columns.
But West Ham United hitman Carlton Cole may be the best bet of the bunch. He ticks all the boxes where physique and technique are concerned, is well established in the Premier League, and carries a modest price-tag compared to some of the other names mentioned. He is currently injured but will return to action early in the New Year – perfect timing, no? |
