Spanish Debate: Real Madrid's Defence Not The World's Best
Bernd Schuster's claims that Real Madrid were able to call upon the best defence in the world seem to have fallen flat of late...
On the surface, there was a case for it at the time. Starting at right-back, Sergio Ramos is certainly no mean player. While his temperament can sometimes get the better of him, he is already a largely consistent performer for both club and country despite his tender years.
So accomplished is he, in fact, that he plays an almost Daniel Alves-esque dual role as right-back and wingback. Not a game goes by in which he is not called upon to contribute in the final third, and while this highlights both his energy and versatility, it also leaves Madrid exposed on that flank.
When he does come back, he does well, but his attacking role deprives the central positions of a bit of his steel. While Sergio Ramos is perhaps a natural right-back, it's not unusual to see him shift to the centre, although it's been happening less lately. It's easy to see why: for example, when Miguel Torres stepped into the breach last week at Deportivo, Madrid's distinct lack of depth at right-back resulted in his being left for dead on many occasions.
This brings us to the left, where admittedly things are not quite as they seem. Schuster's "best four" ended with Gabriel Heinze out wide, but the Argentine didn't take part last night: instead, young Marcelo was given another start.
Like Sergio Ramos, Marcelo often looks the part going forward, and he was indeed involved in a few of the nice passing moves across the edge of the Valencia box. But unlike the ex-Sevilla man, he looked out of his depth at the back. Positionally suspect and perhaps low on confidence, one wonders how much havoc Joaquin would have wreaked had he been able to play on Sunday.
And then there's the middle. With one of this summer's biggest signings coupled with a recent Ballon d'Or winner, surely the Pepe-Cannavaro connection is a match made in heaven.
Well, it is - on paper. For while Pepe has overcome a questionable start to mark himself out as a consistent performer, Fabio Cannavaro last night showed all the worst aspects of his Madrid career so far: poor positioning, frequent lapses in concentration, an overall lack of energy.
That he conceded a penalty in such clumsy, oafish fashion was jaw-dropping to those who remember his beautiful, calm, collected play in the 2006 World Cup for Italy, but repetitions of such form in a white shirt have been nothing if not rare. Last night was a huge example of this.
But there is little scope for rotation. While the aging Cannavaro may well benefit from a spell on the sidelines - as would Madrid's goals-against tally - there are no options to replace him. Sergio Ramos could move in, but that brings about the Miguel Torres dilemma or, worse, gives Michel Salgado a starting berth. Gabriel Heinze hasn't been too solid on some of his own central excursions, and Royston Drenthe - while an accomplished attacking player - shares with Marcelo some defensive frailties that would simply swap one position's problems for another. Christoph Metzelder? He's crocked.
In short, it's none too surprising that Madrid have shipped 14 goals in their last eight games, and truth be told it's hard to remember a time that they truly looked secure.
Emperor's New Clothes?
Yet they have. Statistically the back line held its own in the early stage of the season, and was also partially responsible for that tremendous run of 575 minutes without conceding a league goal that saw 'keeper Iker Casillas propelled to both the front and back pages.
But that's just the thing: Casillas was ultimately the man who kept that record alive. True, the team as a whole played well at Camp Nou, but mere weeks later it was Casillas who put on a one-man show to keep lowly Zaragoza at bay at the Bernabeu. Before the forwards once again rescued Madrid, defensive lapses could have seen the hosts several goals behind if not for the Mostoles-born stopper.
And away from the Liga, Casillas hasn't had the easiest time of it. Madrid's Champions League campaign saw nine different defenders used over the course of the competition, and precisely one clean sheet kept: a 0-0 draw with Olympiacos. In any case, back home Almeria's Diego Alves has outdone Casillas after he went over 600 minutes without conceding.
Maybe then Bernd Schuster's words were not only premature, but also inaccurate.
Even if his back four was superhuman, he of all people should know that it's not eleven men that win a Liga title: it's twenty-five. Has that lesson come too late for him?
