DSA 2014: Day 1

By Marhalim Abbas

SHAH ALAM: The helicopters, tanks and APCs were there at DSA 2014. So were pretty girls hawking guns and bullets but this time around I am going to write about boots, specifically the Army general, marching and jungle boots. The boots are made by local company Kulitkraf Sdn Bhd.

Since started I covering defence and national security issues 20 years ago, I have heard about the complaints about the Army boots from many soldiers. “Keras Macam Batu” or Hard as a Rock, is one of more common phrase to describe the boots. One major told me he wore Fung Keong rubber boots whenever his unit went into the jungle.

Like others I am also guilty of writing about the complaints but always missed the opportunity to find out the reason why from boot maker itself, Kulitkraf. Like other companies involved in the defence industry, Kulitkraf had been participating in the DSA series for many years but boots are not glamorous items they are usually overlook especially from a local company.

12 New CB 90s For MAWILLA 2

RMN Naval Region 2 Command (MAWILLA 2) responsible for operations within the East Malaysian waters would be receiving 12 new Swedish made CB90 boats to reinforced the existing fleet of CB90 boats already in service with the RMN since 2000s.

The procurement of the new CB90s is part of the effort to boost the security of East Coast Sabah as well as to improve surveillance and boarding operations on thousands of small boats plying the waters near the Philippines.

Nevertheless, patrols would not being concentrated on just a sector or area since MAWILLA 2 is responsible to defend 670,000 square kilometers of maritime territories involving both Sabah and Sarawak.

Nevertheless, to ensure the safety and security of the islands in Sabah’s east coast, the Navy has deployed CB90 boats to intercept as many boats as possible and conduct boarding operations on boats categorised as suspicious.

The RMN has conducted five daily patrols in Sabah, involving seven ships and four boats.

Leasing Helicopters – It Might Be The Solution

With the exception of Malaysia and Singapore, military outsourcing, in terms of adoption and implementation, might be something new in this region. Nevertheless, it seems that such concept is slowly taking foot due to the obvious reasons; the gloomy outlook of global economy and government’s effort to reduce deficit (hence the shrinking defence budget allocation).

Ever since the beginning of the 21st century, various military outsourcing projects have been implemented in this country, ranging from provision of specific services (such as target towing and flight training) as well as leasing of equipment (target drones and trainers). While some doesn’t seem so successful, others, have proven that under the right circumstances, management and implementation, military outsourcing could be the best alternative to fill in the requirement which otherwise would have been delayed due to prioritization of  allocations made available to other most pressing need and requirement.

As has been disclosed earlier, the RMP is looking for up to 14 new helicopters to replace its AS-350 Squirrels, already in service since the 1990′s.

DEFTECH has unveiled the latest variant of the AV-8 8×8 Armoured Wheeled Vehicle (AWV) which is equipped with Denel 30mm turret on-board. The company, a subsidiary of DRB-HICOM had previously come up with a prototype equipped with FNSS Sharpshooter 25 mm turret.

DSA 2014: Global Komited and Thales Inks Deal

An MoU was signed between Thales UK and Weststar Group’s Global Komited Sdn Bhd which would see the latter being appointed as the distributor for the former’s surface to air air defence system.

Thales is the producer of Starstreak short range MANPADS currently in service with the military of the UK, South Africa, Thailand and Indonesia. In January 2014, Thales has announced orders for FORCESHIELD Integrated Air Defence System and STARSTREAK Missiles by the Indonesian Ministry for Defence (KEMENHAN). The decision follows those adopted by Thailand in 2012.

Global Komited had previously supplied to the Malaysian Army 4×4 General Service (GS) Cargo vehicles based on Isuzu D-MAX 4WD vehicle as part of the MINDEF plan to replace the Land Rover and Mitsubishi Pajero vehicles. Several of these have been used by the Malaysian Army during Ops Daulat.

Weststar had previously promoted the GK.M1 vehicle to the Malaysian Army and is also promoting IAG JAWS Armoured Personel Carrier (APC).

DSA 2014: Govt To Upgrade Radar and Satellite Technology

The Government will improve its radar and satellite technology in order to address new threats to the country.

According to the Minister for Defence, such requirement exist due to the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) MH 370 incident on March 8.

“Radar technology might be looked at together with data that came from satellite”

“Assets over the ocean must be coordinated with aircraft in the air”, he said during Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2014 exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.

On March 31, the Minister said that Malaysia would need to upgrade its military assets and change its radar system after exposing them to the world in a bid to find the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370.

Hishammuddin said the federal government would also need to review other technology – including sonar for submarines and ships ― to beef up the country’s defence.

“Malaysia has made a very bold decision to inform about the country’s defence capability and now Datuk Seri Najib (prime minister) needs to find money for me to change our radar system.

“We are willing to do that, set aside the country’s interest to find MH370. What more does the people want from the Malaysian government and from ATM (Malaysian Armed Forces,” he told

But he also said that the MH370 search had shown that Malaysia was not alone in needing an overhaul and upgrade of its defence capabilities.

“Not just Malaysia, many other countries in the world also need to reevaluate their assets strength and their military technology.

“If you noticed, the information that we detected came from commercial satellites and not military. So the armed forces globally have to reevaluate their capability. I believe all are doing this including the US. But my job (for now) is only to find where MH370 is,” he said.

Rafale International will showcase the advanced innovation and technologies of a true multirole fighter aircraft at the 14th Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2014 exhibition from April 14 till April 17 in Kuala Lumpur.

Visitors to the DSA 2014 can expect to learn first hand how technologies deployed in the Rafale fighter aircraft has enabled it to emerge superior in terms of versatility to perform different missions with the same system, interoperability with other systems in real time, and flexibility to conduct several missions in the same sortie.

Fremont said on display at the Rafale International booth would be a Rafale mock-up equipped with the Meteor long range air-to-air missile, which is part of the enhancements provided by the new contracted F3-R Standard.

DSA 2014: Any Chance of Attack Helicopter?

Anticipation of a potential Malaysian attack helicopter tender remains high, with candidate platforms from Bell, Airbus Helicopters and Boeing to be showcased at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2014 defence exhbition in Kuala Lumpur.

An increase in insurgent activity across Malaysia has placed the country’s lack of helicopter offensive capabilities under the spotlight, prompting the Malaysian Army to begin assessing suitable platforms.

Boeing and Airbus Helicopters have been offering the AH-6 Little Bird and EC665 Tiger respectively, while Bell is promoting both the UH-1Y Venom and AH-1Z Viper helicopters.

There is some speculation as to whether AgustaWestland and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) will compete with their jointly-developed T-129 Skorpion attack helicopter, although the companies have offered no comment to date.

At present, the Malaysian forces have no attack helicopter in their inventories, relying instead on fast-moving fighter aircraft.
