Palermo nick win over Hammers
Andrea Caracciolo nicked a goal just before half time to give Palermo a slender 1-0 UEFA Cup lead over West Ham United on Thursday. Despite the appearances of both Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez - starting in claret and blue for the first time together - the Italian club hold a slight advantage.
Striker Caracciolo opened the scoring just before the half time whistle sounded, converting a brilliant cross from Aimo Diana with his knee to give the Rosaneri a slight advantage going into the second half.
The West Ham players and fans complained bitterly about the absence of a whistle after they thought they saw the ball run out of play in the build up to the goal, but the referee and his assistant were not impressed and the goal stood.
The home side could, and perhaps should, have equalised, substitute Marlon Harewood going closest when he struck an upright with just over ten minutes remaining.
But Palermo held firm and are now favourites to progress to the second round when the two teams square up once again in a fortnight's time at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.
TEVEZ CATCHES EYE
Of the Hammers' two new signings, Tevez caught the eye more then his compatriot, although Mascherano was probably more effective in his holding midfield role.
"They've shown what they can bring," said Hammers manager Alan Pardew. "Now they have to harness it.
West Ham had asserted themselves well throughout the first half, and were unlucky not to have gone in front themselves just minutes before the Palermo opener.
And it was the main attraction of the evening, Tevez, who should have opened the scoring when he latched onto an inch perfect Bobby Zamora cross. It seemed that all he had to do was direct the ball goalwards and he would score.
NO JOY
The Argentine did get on the end of the centre, sidefooting neatly towards goal, but he saw his effort repelled by Fontana as the goalkeeper threw himself at the ball to divert behind for a corner.
Those two chances aside, the first half lacked clear cut goalscoring opportunities, and a 0-0 scoreline heading into the dressing rooms at the break would have been a fair reflection of the opening period.
"I was happy with our effort and organisation," Pardew said.
"But I'm far from disappointed with the result. We've got a good chance over there, and from what we've seen over here, we've got nothing to be afraid of. |

Winger joins Villa Tue, Sep 12 2006 14:55
Former Celtic winger Didier Agathe has joined Aston Villa on a short term deal and will stay with the club until at least January.
After being released by Celtic, Agathe has had trial spells at a number of clubs but for the last few weeks has been training with Villa and he will now link up again with his former Hoops boss Martin O'Neill.
The Northern Irishman told the club's official website: "He's not just here to make up the numbers.
"He's here because I think he has the talent and the hunger to get into our side and do a good job for us."
The 31-year-old has only signed until January but could be offered a long-term deal if he impresses O'Neill enough.
The boss added: "He played brilliantly for a number of years at Celtic, but for whatever reason found himself out of favour. That happens sometimes, but Didier still feels he has plenty to offer." |

Villa handed striker boost Fri, Sep 15 2006 14:20
Milan Baros is in contention for a starting place when Villa face Watford tomorrow, having made a fully recovery from a foot injury.
The Czech Republic striker is yet to feature for Villa this season after picking up the foot problem at this summer's World Cup, but is set to be included in the squad that travels to Vicarage Road.
The former Liverpool man proved his fitness in midweek when he scored a brace in the reserves 2-1 win over Portsmouth in midweek.
Dutch defender Wilfred Bouma is also back available for Martin O'Neill, having played the full 90 minutes for the second string, while Didier Agathe will be in the squad after signing on a short-term deal this week.
With Patrick Berger now also back fit, O'Neill is delighted that his options are increasing all the time as Villa look to build on their fine start to the season.
The boss said: "The best aspect about having players fit again is that we do have flexibility if we want it. I can change the system around." |

Pardew issues Euro warning Fri, Sep 15 2006 10:30
Alan Pardew feels the Uefa Cup tie with Palermo is 'not over' despite the 1-0 home defeat and expects a 'psychological' second leg.
Andrea Caracciolo's 45th-minute strike was enough for the Serie A side to claim a victory at Upton Park, but West Ham feel slightly unfortunate to have been beaten and have certainly not given up on the tie.
The Hammers will head to the Stadio Renzo Barbera in a fortnight's time, more than hopeful that they can turn things around and still reach the Uefa Cup group stages.
Pardew, who had talked up Palermo before the game, was philosophical after the defeat and issued a warning to the Italians ahead of the second leg.
The boss said: "I thought that we were pretty evenly matched and the second leg will be an interesting, psychological game.
With that 1-0 lead it will be interesting to see just how they approach the tie at their place. We know what we're going to do, though - we'll be taking the game straight to them."
"If they use similar tactics then that will not present us with a problem and if they open up that'll suit us too. With one or two breaks out there, it could be a very different result indeed." |

Boss happy with new duo Fri, Sep 15 2006 10:57
Alan Pardew has praised Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano after impressive first starts for the club in the clash with Palermo.
The Argentinian duo have made a solid start to their careers at Upton Park without pulling up any trees, but Pardew is happy with how both players have settled in and performed.
The boss said: "Neither Carlos Tevez nor Javier Mascherano find the physical side of the game a problem and I was very pleased with their performances.
"Mascherano's delivery of pass raised us a level. Javier had the bit between his teeth after the break, he raised the tempo and put in an accomplished display, while Tevez again showed that he has special talent and we just need to harness that."
Pardew revealed that he started with Tevez in a left-hand sided role to try and avoid conceding an early goal, then later pushing him further forward to cause more problems as an attacking force. |
