Naomi Watts stars in The Impossible, based on the true events that devastated one real-life family during the 2004 Thailand tsunami. We recently chatted with Naomi about the film, out Dec. 21, as well her holiday plans and the upcoming award season. It seems 2013 is already shaping up to be exciting year for Naomi, who earlier this week earned a best actress SAG and Golden Globe nod for her work in the film. According to Naomi, it's all "very flattering," though she's still full of "angst" heading into award season. »
The film tells the true story of a Spanish couple, played by Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, and their three children. It starts as the family begins their Christmas vacation in Thailand, with the intention of spending a few days at a tropical paradise resort. However, their idyllic vacation is interrupted on the morning of December 26, 2004, when a devastating tsunami interrupts their relaxation and destroys the coastal zone, separating the family and triggering a frantic search.
When the 2004 tsunami hit Southeast Asia, devastating the area and destroying everything in its path, the lives of millions changed forever. The Impossible tells the true story of one family who went away to Thailand on holiday and found themselves literally overwhelmed by colossal disaster.
The film stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor as parents of three young boys who go to Khao Lak for Christmas in 2004. They land on Christmas Eve and enjoy the typical hotel luxuries on offer.
However, when the tsunami hits on the morning of December 26, the family is separated as Maria Bennet (Watts) and her oldest son Lucas (Tom Holland) try to survive while her husband Henry (McGregor) is together with the other boys, Simon (Oaklee Pendergast) and Thomas (Samuel Joslin).
Through that simple but powerful premise, The Impossible sets the stage for unimaginable tragedy and stellar performances by Watts, McGregor, and Holland. Watts’ emotionally charged portrayal of a mother desperate to save her children, wounded emotionally and physically, is particularly notable.
It’s a story that hits a little close to home, being in the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’, and is sure to bring tears to audience’s eyes with the simplest of gestures. From sharing a can of soda to shouts across a room.
The Impossible does an impressive job of putting us into the moment when the tsunami hit without over-exaggerating its impact. There are no ridiculously massive walls of water or crazy kilometre-high waves – the ocean simply washes over the beachside resort where the family is staying. The movie then follows the stricken family as they try to survive the initial impact and make sense of the aftermath.
Characters come and go as both passing figures and points of joy. Our protagonists come in contact with others in the tragedy, pulling the audience further into the catastrophe and leaves us wondering just how easily we could have found – and could still find – ourselves and loved ones in that awful situation. Once can only imagine what those who were here during that time will make of the movie.
The Impossible tells the simple, true story of what people like you and me do when disaster strikes.
The film is being screened at both SFX Coliseum Phuket (Central Festival) and SFC Jungceylon (Patong) at the following times:

17 Jan 2013?ntah idup ke tidak....................
Biasa je citer ni..ada la part sedih...part tsunama membadai tu best...
tp x byk sgt....
Tapi napa tajuk dia IMPOSSIBLE? X paham apa relevannya..apa yg imposible?imposible yg dia sekeluarga masih hidup wpon teruk kena tsunmai? ye kot sbb anak dia yg 2 boys tu xde cedera apa pon walhal kena sunami.....
The Impossible tu I think merujuk kepada Naomi yg berjaya bertemu dgn keluarga dia walaupun terpisah akibat tsunami yg dahsyat....tiada yg mustahil jika mempunyai kudrat....
sedih yg amat.... i nanges stat masa tsunami tu berlaku sampai la ke aher cerita.......
tak kisah la kalo kat IMDB ada yg kata filem ni ada berbaur perkauman sbb asal famili tu real life nya Spanish tp dilakonkan oleh Caucasians.... dan kebanyakan yg cedera dlm filem ni kaum omputih... sedangkan in reality, penduduk tempatan lagi la sengsara.....
but tak kisah la semua tu... kita pun tau apa yg terjadi....
lagi pun filem ni awal2 dah set yg ia akan fokus pada 1 family ni saja..... bgaimana dorang hadapi rintangan berpisah from each other sbb tsunami.... it's about the family's struggle to survive..... thru that family's POV pun kita dah dapat rasa penderitaan ramai lagi mangsa tsunami yg sebenar........
just enjoy the story, lakonan semuanya superb.... Naomi, Ewan dan the 3 boys mmg best sgt lakonan dorang.... we can actually feel their pain, physically and mentally...... special mention for Tom Holland who plays Lucas.... although he's been snubbed for the Oscars, his acting is beyond his years....... patutnya dia pun kena calon utk Oscar, kalo Quevenzhane Wallis kena calon utk Beasts of Southern Wild and she's only 9 .... Tom Holland pun patutnya kena calon.... well, in the future, harap2 dia akan dpt watak2 yg lagi best ......
apa2 pun, overall, I highly recommend The Impossible.... thumbs up!
