Synopsis
Hashimoto Taichi, a third year student at Myongji University, has no particular goals for the future and has been leading an ordinary student’s life. One day, he finds a female university student standing on the edge of the university building’s rooftop. “Don’t tell me …!?” Taichi thinks to himself as he hastily runs up to the rooftop and holds the body of the girl tightly, forgetting about his fear of heights. However, the girl pouts and bursts into laughter. “What a fool. Did it look like I was going to commit suicide?!” That is how Taichi and Mioka met. At that moment, Mioka’s mother, Kaori, visits Dr Takanashi Hiroyuki at Tohto University Hospital. In fact, it was discovered six months earlier that Mioka has a serious medical problem in her brain, and her life is in danger. Kaori still has not accepted this fact, but Dr Takanashi coolly tells her, “Your daughter’s illness … is advancing slowly, but surely.” The following day, Taichi has promised to celebrate the birthday of his schoolmate, Goto Mari, together and goes to buy a present for her. He chances upon Mioka. Mioka is on a date with an older man but when she knows that Taichi is worried, she abandons the man and declares that she will select Mari’s present with him. “Is it okay to neglect your boyfriend?” Taichi asks and Mioka responds, “That kind of guy is not my boyfriend. I will not seriously go steady with anyone.” Although Taichi is completely thrown off by Mioka’s pace, he spends an unexpectedly happy time with Mioka. Taichi starts to be aware of her presence. Meanwhile, Mioka visits Dr Takanashi again and asks, “Doctor … How much longer can I live?”

Cast & Characters

Yoshitaka Yuriko as Minegishi Mioka
A third year student at Myongji University. A girl with a self-assured, strong personality as well as free-spirited behaviour. Because of that, she creates an uproar one way or another. However, it is later learned that the reason for that behaviour is an incurable disease in her brain. Mioka decides that she will “no longer seriously love someone again”, but she falls in love with her schoolmate, Hashimoto Taichi, and rushes through it with the life she has left.
Hayashi Kento as Hashimoto Taichi
A third year student at Myongji University. His family runs a small convenience goods store downtown. He has not decided on his goals for the future, and has been leading an uninteresting, ordinary university life. But one day, he meets Mioka, a girl like the tempest. And so, he begins to change as he spends every day with her.
Maya Miki as Minegishi Kaori
Minegishi Mioka’s mother. An ordinary housewife who lives with her husband, Hajime, and Mioka. However, everything changed with the discovery of Mioka’s illness half a year ago. Terawaki Yasufumi as Minegishi Hajime
Mioka’s father. An ordinary salaryman at a medium-sized company. Because he has not spoken very much to Mioka ever since she became an adolescent, he does not know how to talk to her even though he would like to do so now that her illness has been discovered. However, seeing his wife, Kaori, racked by Mioka’s illness, he becomes aware of his role as a husband, and decides to be firmly supportive of his family.
Tanihara Shosuke as Takanashi Hiroyuki
A physician at Tohto University Hospital who specialises in neuroendocrine cancer. Mioka’s attending physician. An outstanding doctor who treats patients with sincerity, and is the only the only person whom the free-spirited Mioka sometimes gives away her true feelings. At times, he speaks harsh words but he has provided tremendous support for Mioka and her parents.

A third year student at Myongji University. A well-off girl who was born and raised in Tokyo. A cheerful beauty, she stands out from the university crowd. Amusing “Mioka” press conference with Yoshitaka Yuriko
Today was the press conference for NTV's new drama "Mioka" starring Yoshitaka Yuriko (21) held at the Seikei University and Yoshitaka sure was able to surprise the reporters with her answers.
"Mioka" is based on a novel by Ishida Ira and was filmed at the same school Ishida attended during his student days. The story is all about the importance of love and life. It focuses on the female college student Mioka (Yoshitaka) who has an incurable disease and is aware that she won't be able to live a long life. For that reason she doesn't hold back and tries to live every day to the fullest. The viewers will be able experience all that energy and the deep messages during Mioka's interactions with the person she falls in love with, Taichi played by Hayashi Kento (19), Taichi's actual girlfriend Mari played by Mizusawa Elena (18), her family and the doctors.
Since the drama starts with Mioka falling in love with the boyfriend of one of her classmates, the reporters asked Yoshitaka to give them her opinion about that matter. "I know that answering that question could affect my image, …but if there is an absolutely undeniable attraction between the two, I say go for it!" Now that she already answered without caring about her image, the reporters continued and asked her whether she ever had a similar experience, but she immediately blocked the questioned and responded, "What are you asking me!!??"
Yoshitaka continued to stick to Mioka's character during the rest of the press conference. Mioka is a girl like a storm with a lot of freedom and the reporters asked who has the most "freedom" among the cast and everyone immediately pointed at Yoshitaka. She sighed for a moment, but then she countered, "Yeah, because I'm totally at the advantage for having a drolly father at home and quite a detestable doctor at the hospital!!" Terawaki Yasufumi (48) who plays her father and Tanihara Shosuke (37) who plays her doctor didn't expect that at all and were really overwhelmed with such a response.
Terawaki continued to go a bit more into the detail of the freedom Yoshitaka or rather Mioka seems to have at the set. "She starts to tickle me, touches my nipples and says: 'You are more sensitive than a girl!' … She truly is one mischievous child. I'll try hard not to lose against her when it comes to pranks!" He said and followed down the path of not caring about his image.
Other actors that also attended the event but weren't mentioned in the article are Katsudzi Ryo (23), Yuuki Jutta (25), Nakamura Shizuka (21) and Maya Miki (46).
The series also marks Yoshitaka's first full-blown starring role in a drama. Fukuyama Masaharu will be responsible for the theme song called "Hotaru". Start for the drama will be on July 10th at 9pm.
